Lima Barreto: rupturas
On stability and isoperimetry of constant mean curvature spheres of and
We approach the one-parameter family of rotational constant mean curvature (CMC) spheres of Hn × R and Sn × R focusing on their stability and isoperimetry properties. We prove that all rotational CMC spheres of Hn × R are stable, and that the ones in Sn × R with sufficiently small (resp. large) mean curvature are unstable (resp. stable). We also show that there exists a one-parameter family of stable CMC rotational spheres in Sn × R which are not isoperimetric (i.e., they do not bound isoperimetric regions). We establish the uniqueness of the regions enclosed by the rotational CMC spheres of Hn × R as solutions to the isoperimetric problem, filling in a gap in the original proof given by Hsiang and Hsiang. We establish, as well, a sharp upper bound for the volume of the spherical regions of Sn × R which are unique solutions to the isoperimetric problem. In essence, all these results come from the fact that the rotational CMC spheres of Hn × R, and those of Sn × R with sufficiently large mean curvature, are nested
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
The persistent water problems of Lima, Peru:Neoliberalism, institutional failures and social inequalities
The contingent relation between water governance and nature neoliberalization has defined most interventions in the water sector around the world in recent years. In the case of the Peruvian capital Lima, the provision of water and sanitation services in the last two decades has been the object of investments and institutional reforms strongly influenced by economic neoliberalism. This essay examines the evolution of these neoliberalizing tendencies, noting the internal disputes, necessary adjustments and underlying problems of water sufficiency in the metropolitan region. The empirical results suggest that, rather than a straightforward process, the neoliberalization of water in Lima has advanced according to political opportunities and technico-operational constraints. The water reforms implemented in the 1990s - when the goal of privatization met political opposition - can be contrasted with the more recent phase in the 2000s, when more flexible mechanisms, such as public-private partnerships, have facilitated public acceptance. Despite the renovation of the infrastructure, the modernization of the water sector has failed to address persistent water management problems, namely the discriminatory treatment of low income residents, the chaotic expansion of the metropolitan area and the risk of future water shortages
Caenis elidioi Lima, Molineri, Pinheiro & Salles 2016
Caenis elidioi Lima, Molineri, Pinheiro & Salles, 2016 (Fig. 2) Caenis sp. Angeli et al., 2015: 200 (adults); Lima et al., 2016b: 215 (adults and nymphs). Caenis elidioi Lima et al., 2016a: 117 (adults, nymph and eggs). Distribution. Brazil: States of Bahia, Ceará, Espírito Santo, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Minas Gerais, Paraíba, and Pernambuco. New record: Roraima State. Material examined. Seven males imagos, Brazil, Roraima State, Amajari, Estação Ecológica de Maracá, 11– 19.xi.2007, Pes, A.M.O., Neiss, U.G. and Albino, J. cols. Comments. Caenis elidioi, recently described from all stages by Lima et al. (2016a), is another species from the lineage with strong and apically pointed forceps. C. elidioi can be characterized, among other characters by the presence of forceps pointed, sharpening abruptly and forming a long tip at the apex, and penes dorsally and laterally protruding as Figs. 8–9 in Lima et al. (2016a). This species seems to be widespread in Brazil and its record here represent the first in the Amazon River Basin.Published as part of Lima, Lucas R. "Closing the R&D Gap, Evaluating the Sources of R&D Spending"
Both spending and tax policies have been implemented in the United States with the goal of stimulating private sector research and development (R&D). Karier questions whether current R&D policy, especially the research and experimentation tax credit, can contribute to closing the gap between nondefense expenditures on R&D in the United States and such expenditures in other countries, such as Japan and Germany. He also explores possible changes to our current R&D policy to make it more effective.
