Rodrigo Sánchez de Arévalo’s 'Suma de la política': The Civic Kingdom-City and Spanish Vernacular Humanism

    No full text
The dissertation is an edition of Rodrigo Sánchez de Arévalo’s 'Suma de la política' with an introductory essay that focuses on the main political and ethical ideas addressed in the treatise, the texts and sources used, and the general implications that the text and its author have in the context of Spanish vernacular humanism. The introductory essay underscores that Arévalo’s writing in Spanish is much more novel and interesting than literary critics have often recognized and points out that Arévalo’s attitudes toward Renaissance humanism are more open than several acclaimed scholars have been willing to admit, or at least to recognize. This edition intends to supplant Mario Penna’s (1959), as his text has many errors and a limited critical apparatus. Moreover, I have added commentary on the treatise, located many of the numerous texts and authors mentioned by Arévalo in his text, and offered a complete critical apparatus that includes not only Penna, but also the first copy to appear in print of Arévalo’s work by Juan Beneyto Pérez (1943) and a recent French translation—based on Penna’s text—by Beátrice Leroy (2015). Both the edition and the introductory essay intend to provide a reliable scholarly edition, as well as new perspectives on one of Castile’s most important, yet not fully appreciated, political and ecclesiastical figures of the fifteenth century. Moreover, the edition and introduction will offer new insights and views on the impact of the recent revival of Classical thought through Renaissance humanism in the reconfiguration and reorganization of government in Castile, especially through the lens of the monarchy’s attempts to rein in the nobles and (re)construct society, politics, and literature around the king himself

Academic Stress Level Determination among College Students in Times of Covid-19 Pandemic: Basis for an Intervention Scheme

    No full text
This study measured the level of academic stress among students regarding personal inadequacy, fear of failure, interpersonal difficulties with teachers, and inadequate learning resources in times of Covid-19 pandemic Using a descriptive-comparative approach. Slovin's formula was used to identify the respondents with a stratified random sampling technique to generate the required sample size of the study. The results revealed that the level of academic stress in times of the Covid-19 pandemic is high. It is also revealed that there is no significant difference in the level of academic stress when respondents are grouped according to sex, year level, and the number of hours spent for modular learning per day and provided significant difference when grouped according to course. Demographic profiles show that most of the students belong to the poor classification of monthly family income and with a low allowance for internet subscriptions. It also shows that with the intensity of requirements in the course pack, most students allocated many hours to answer the lessons per day. Present findings suggest that the institution must address intervention schemes through academic and non-academic services

Combinatorial principles in second-order theories of bounded arithmetic

    No full text
An attempt is made to study the mathematical strength of the weak second order theories of Bounded Arithmetic U\sbsp{2}{i} and V\sbsp{2}{i}, i \geq 0, introduced by S. Buss. It is first shown that U\sbsp{2}{1} can \Sigma\sbsp{1}{1,b}-define the functions in the second class of Grzegorczyk, \varepsilon\sp2, or, equivalently, the class of \Sigma\sbsp{1}{1,b}-definable functions in U\sbsp{2}{1} is closed under bounded recursion. It is shown next that U\sbsp{2}{1} proves the \Delta\sbsp{1}{1,b}-pigeonhole principle. Two general combinatorial principles, the \Delta\sbsp{1}{1,b}-partition principle and the \Delta\sbsp{1}{1,b}-equipartition principle, are obtained from it thereby demonstrating that the \Delta\sbsp{1}{1,b}-PHP embodies a strong notion of cardinality. The introduction of these principles is motivated with some examples, notably by showing that Euler's theorem is provable in U\sbsp{2}{1}. The provability of Euler's theorem in weak first order fragments of Peano Arithmetic is an open problem."A theory of polynomials is developed in U\sbsp{2}{1} and it is proved that U\sbsp{2}{1} + B \vdash ""existence of primitive roots"" where formula B asserts that a nontrivial polynomial of degree n can have at most n solutions modulo p if p is a prime. By an essential use of the \Delta\sbsp{1}{1,b}-PHP and the \Delta\sbsp{1}{1,b}-partition principle it is shown that V\sbsp{2}{1}\/\vdash B, hence V\sbsp{2}{1}\/\vdash ""existence of primitive roots""."Made available in DSpace on 2011-05-07T12:35:53Z (GMT). The present work aims to contextualize the innovations brought by Law no. 13.718 / 18, with the main scope of the practice known as Revenge Porn (Revenge Porn or Pornographic Revenge), also address its characterization in the light of Criminal Law. The Vengeance pornography phenomenon is approved by the disclosure without consent of photos, videos, audios and other types of media that contain intimate content of the victim, in the virtual environment (social networks, instant messaging applications, hosting on websites, among others). Consequently, this research has also studied the crimes arising from Law 13.718 / 18, and their conformation. After the analysis of the initial concepts about the fact, the applicability of the crime of art. 218-C, § 1 to the Neymar Jr. Vs. Najila Trindade case, since the author after being reported for rape, released images and conversations with the victim, without identification and a blurred face. Finally, it will be examined for the player\u27s conduct in conjunction with the framing mechanisms of the criminal incriminating type and the possibility of criminal liability.O presente trabalho visa contextualizar as inovações trazidas pela Lei n. 13.718/18, com escopo principal a prática conhecida como Pornografia de Vingança (Revenge Porn ou Revanche Pornográfico), também abordar sua caracterização à luz do Direito Penal.

Readiness of Students in Flexible Learning Modality: A Convergent Parallel Mixed-Methods Study

    No full text
This convergent-parallel mixed-methods study was conducted to examine students' readiness on flexible learning modality established in the local context based on Commission on Higher Education Memorandum Order No. 04 series of 2020 or the "Guidelines on the Implementation "Flexible Learning in the Philippines." A sample of  408 students participated in the study. The self-determination theory model and contextual approach to e-learning delivery (learning flexibility, online learning, study management, technology, modular learning, and online interaction) were used as theoretical underpinnings. Data collected using electronic surveys and information from semi-structured interviews were analyzed. The application of a descriptive survey confirms the low level of readiness among students. When compared across the population, the results provided no significant difference in the level of readiness among students when grouped according to sex and provided significant difference according to year level and Course. Interpreting the results together with qualitative analysis parallels the notion of difficulties among students in all dimensions of flexible learning. This research places the thrust of improving curriculum delivery by addressing flexible learning policies in the local context

Sensitivity Towards Sociocultural Plagiarism in the Context of Varied Discipline among College Students

    No full text
Socio-cultural plagiarism provides an understanding of the social values and attitudes among students in academic writing. Based on the rules and regulations of any academic institution, adequate awareness of different forms of plagiarism, citation techniques, paraphrasing, and other instances of copyright infringement should be tailored to any type of violation against conduct and discipline, particularly in cheating. A descriptive-comparative approach uses this study to measure the level of sensitivity among students towards socio-cultural plagiarism in terms of awareness, attitude, socio-cultural beliefs, and perception. Applying Slovin's formula, the respondents were identified using a simple random sampling technique. The results revealed that the level of sensitivity among students towards socio-cultural plagiarism is low. It is also revealed that there is no significant difference in the level of sensitivity among students towards socio-cultural plagiarism when respondents are grouped according to discipline. Therefore, as the basis for an intervention program, ethical standards of writing and the tools or technology to detect plagiarized output of the students are crucial elements towards the institution's academic standards

Estimating selection pressures on HIV-1 using phylogenetic likelihood models

    No full text
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) can rapidly evolve due to selection pressures exerted by HIV-specific immune responses, antiviral agents, and to allow the virus to establish infection in different compartments in the body. Statistical models applied to HIV-1 sequence data can help to elucidate the nature of these selection pressures through comparisons of non-synonymous (or amino acid changing) and synonymous (or amino acid preserving) substitution rates. These models also need to take into account the non-independence of sequences due to their shared evolutionary history. We review how we have developed these methods and have applied them to characterize the evolution of HIV-1 in vivo. To illustrate our methods, we present an analysis of compartment-specific evolution of HIV-1 em) in blood and cerebrospinal fluid and of site-to-site variation in the gag gene of subtype C HIV-1. Método histórico e crítica política na historiografia produzida por Eduardo Prado no final do século XIX

    No full text
The aim of this article is to analyze the articulation between historical method and political criticism in the historiography developed by the São Paulo writer Eduardo Prado in the transition from the 19th to the 20th century. At this time, Prado became known nationally and internationally as the main opponent of the young Brazilian Republic. The reflection is divided into three parts: first, I examine how the author mobilized the epistemological values of the historical method to confront the Brazilian government in the books “Fastos da ditadura militar brasileira” and “Ilusão Americana”, published in 1890 and 1893 respectively. Next, I look at the correspondence that Eduardo Prado exchanged with interlocutors such as Paranhos Jr, Joaquim Nabuco and Capistrano de Abreu, where it is possible to understand something about the logic of historiographical procedures in the finissecular Brazilian intellectual scene. Finally, I analyze how Prado took criticism of the Brazilian Republic as a starting point for his research on Portuguese colonization in America, published at the end of the 1890s.O objetivo deste artigo é analisar a articulação entre método histórico e crítica política na historiografia desenvolvida pelo escritor paulista Eduardo Prado na transição do século XIX para o século XX. What macroeconomic policies are"sound?"

    No full text
Most people agree that the soundness of macroeconomic policies should be judged by their efficacy in meeting the objectives of steady growth, full employment, stable prices, and a viable external payments situation. What people debate about are the links between macroeconomics and economic structure--and in the current environment, the openness to foreign capital flows. As developing countries become more integrated into international financial markets, volatility may become an increasing fact of life. Faced with such volatility, how should these countries frame their macroeconomic policies? What broad principles should guide their macroeconomic management? In many developing countries, the openness of the capital account has been significant. Many countries have made the transition toward an open-economic paradigm. As a result, fluctuations in international capital and currency markets, as well as shifts in foreign investors'attitudes and confidence, have greatly affected local stock market prices, the level of foreign exchange reserves, and the scope for monetary and interest rate policy. Capital controls and foreign exchange restrictions have been significantly dismantled in a number of developing and transition economies. In 1970, only 34 countries--or 30 percent of the International Monetary Fund's membership-had assumed Article VIII of the IMF Articles of Agreement, declaring their currency convertible on current account transactions. By 1997, this figure had increased to 77 percent. Does financial integration make it more difficult to achieve macroeconomic stability? Apparently not, on the whole, although at times large short-term capital flows can lead to misaligned asset prices, including exchange rates. What financial integration does do is limit how far countries can pursue policies incompatible with medium-term financial stability. The disciplining effect of global financial and product markets applies not only to policymakers-through pressures on financial markets-but also to the private sector. Rather than constrain the pursuit of appropriate policies, globalization may add leverage and flexibility to such policies, easing financing constraints and extending the time during which countries can make adjustments. But markets will provide this leeway only if they perceive that countries are undertaking adjustments that address fundamental choices.Economic Theory&Research,Fiscal&Monetary Policy,Payment Systems&Infrastructure,Banks&Banking Reform,Environmental Economics&Policies,Banks&Banking Reform,Environmental Economics&Policies,Financial Intermediation,Economic Theory&Research,Macroeconomic Management
