(DIPF/Orig.)Based on self-determination theory (Deci/Ryan 1985) the author investigates the function of the experience of autonomy, competence and relatedness for the development of self-determined motivation during university courses. On the basis of interview- and questionnaire data two aspects of the experience of autonomy were analyzed. While the results of structural equation models obtained by a longitudinal survey support the theoretical assumption of the importance of the experience of both aspects of autonomy the qualitative interview data support the importance of the experience of competence. Perception and processing of controversial scientific information in museums
The aim of this work is to further investigate how controversial scientific evidences in museums which are presented in texts are perceived, processed and handled. For this purpose the cognitive processes as well as the sustainability of the perception and processing are identified. Two research perspectives are considered and combined: The perspective of learning and cognitive psychology and the perspective of museum research
Eine Untersuchung zum Schülerinteresse im Kontext des Problembasierten Lernens
This dissertation investigates student interest in the context of problem-based learning (PBL). It aligns the agenda of advancing interest theory with using research to make a difference in classrooms. The dissertation includes five empirical studies which are guided by a design-based research approach. The findings highlight the dynamics of motivation-in-context experiences and they identify specific affordances of PBL activities which foster students’ interest thereby extending the empirical basis for the motivational design of PBL environments.Diese Dissertation untersucht das Interesse von Schülerinnen und Schülern im Kontext des Problembasierten Lernens. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Supporting Student's Scientific Literacy Through School Field Trips to Science Museums
The dissertation compares the motivational and cognitive effects of different forms of school field trips to science museums systematically and on a theoretical basis. Thereby, the study investigates student’s motivational and cognitive learning outcomes as well as their learning processes according to the different visiting forms. The results highlights museum’s potential to support interest development and knowledge acquisition and identifies important aspects supportive to interest and knowledge development for each visiting form
Argumentation from data and evidence evaluation is widely seen as a scientific core practice. One approach to engage students in a meaningful argumentation practice is to provide lab work situations where they can construct hypotheses on the basis of their own prior knowledge and consequently evaluate these hypotheses in light of self-collected data. However, until recently, only little research has analyzed students' argumentation from data. Against this backdrop this research seeks to identify: a) the influences of personal factors (such as content knowledge and situational interest); b) the type of learning environment as a situational factor (real vs. virtual experiment) on the use of different categories of argument (such as Intuition, Appeal to Authority, Measurement Uncertainties (explicit) and Data as Evidence); c) the influence of argumentation on learning outcomes through experimentation in school labs. First, an interview-study was used to identify the different types of arguments used by students. Analyses focused on the nature of justification in argument and revealed ten different categories students use while arguing for or against hypotheses. As a next step, four out of ten categories were operationalized by means of a Likert-scaled instrument to assess the use of different types of argument in a valid and reliable manner. The findings from a randomized study among 938 secondary school students in a lab work setting indicate, among others, that content knowledge is positively related to the use of data as evidence. Again, the use of data as evidence increases the probability of stating a correct hypothesis after conducting the experiment. This implies that the ability to deal with data and measurement uncertainties should be better fostered in physics classes. Besides one explicable difference, no evidence was found, which supports the hypothesis that students' argumentation would differ while working with hands-on materials vs. computer simulations
