    No full text
The function of empowerment is to equip people with the knowledge, skills, and perspectives that can sustain and improve both personal and societal well-being. Empowerment can occur by means of education, as well as by supportive programs in social work, community development, and philanthropy. Especially when intended for the poor, marginalized, or minority students, such programs should be well-focused on methods for building long-term capabilities and for strengthening societal participation. Our investigation documented empowerment methods and effects in three Islamic-based, partially statefunded, co-educational schools, one located in Yogyarkarta, Indonesia, and two located in Sydney, Australia. The study gathered individual and group accounts from teachers, academic staff, and parents at these schools. Their accounts were examined with reference to the educational precepts valued by the schools and their communities. This qualitative case-study used interviews, focus group discussions, and review of selected documents to examine the significance of education as implemented through curricula that includes moral education. The findings illustrate how such programs serve as empowerment for students toward fulfilling spiritual, economic, and social needs. Islamic moral education was seen to be embedded in many courses, including languages, arts, culture, social studies, sports, and science. This research found that there is an urgency for Islamic schools to grow their resources in order to remain viable, to provide powerless children with access to education, and to empower these students through curricular and extracurricular activities

Marriage for some people is a sacred thing: it is a part of the important forms of worship of God. The sacredness, nevertheless, to some extent disappears when the marriage mainly becomes a trap that concludes with prostitution and slavery. This article examines mail-order bride as a form of human  trafficking. Women in this kind of trafficking are primarily trafficked for prostitution industries. The mail, order bride arrangements occur in Indonesia and, also, in many countries in South Asia and Southeast Asia, including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Vietnam, and Malaysia. This form of trafficking is more difficult to deal with because of its hidden schema: marriage is commonly considered an individual privacy wherein outsiders cannot easily interfere

The role of charity for needy Indonesians has a long history and tradition. One aspect has been educational goals. Free education for needy children is provided in Indonesia, yet very few reports have been structured to assess success or failure. Using mixed approaches of first-hand solicited data and secondary literature review, the current study was particularly designed to examine the reciprocal roles of donors and recipients. This was done in order to understand how to motivate increased donations and how to improve the likelihood that recipients will benefit in their self-esteem and life skills. Additional perspectives were derived from reports of student educational experiences in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Findings show that students in Yogyakarta have been waived from tuition, and they have received school equipment and educational logistics for their learning. Several students’ parents in Yogyakarta, however, showed their uneasiness about continuance of children’s education after graduation from elementary public school; they want their children to continue into higher education. The parents also discussed the issue of balancing moral education and science, but their views might contradict the school’s objective of forming students’ attitudes and behavior with spirituality, religious teachings, and moral conduct, such as prayers and Qur’anic memorization

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)Existing zakat research reports little information about the living conditions of Indonesian zakat recipients. This study examined the perceptions of zakat recipients at Rumah Zakat, a charitable institution, in Yogyakarta. Semi-structured interviews solicited seven economic empowerment and seven socio-health program respondents’ narratives. This data collection method incorporating multiple approaches to data analysis, including phenomenology, revealed that economic empowerment respondents with more education and spousal support could better subsist after utilizing Rumah Zakat’s interest-free loans. And, compared to individual efforts or group support, spousal support helped significantly with business growth. These respondents typically earned incomes above the national standard of poverty. As their businesses grew, four respondents planned to employ the jobless. In the socio-health program, respondents had minimal education and incomes that fell below the national standard of poverty. A Rumah Zakat clinic gave these respondents four to five years of free health care services; it also facilitated collaborative learning. Although the services lowered their expenses, three respondents requested food distribution in addition to health care. Respondents benefiting from both programs reported a significant positive impact on their home economies, health, and social lives. Thus, an integrative program offering assistance with micro-credits, health care, food security, and education would better serve the poor
