This master’s dissertation aims to consider the specific challenges regarding the translation of fantasy literature, through a commented translation of part of Jade War by Fonda Lee. In this regard, the creation of neologisms in a literary context, as well as how they are used to construe a fantasy universe is of significant relevancy. Throughout the discussion of the translation, it becomes clear that these neologisms contribute not only towards the creation of Lee’s physical universe, but also towards the construction of each character’s individual personality. Therefore, the translation of the text strives to convey to the reader the cultural inspiration that is the base of Lee’s work, so as to enthrall Portuguese readers and further propel fantasy literature in Portugal. With this in mind, this dissertation entails a theory review regarding the literary genre and the translation of fantasy literature, a study on the challenges related to the translation of fantasy literature, as well as the commented translation of five chapters of Jade War, with a focus on the use of neologisms, on the presence of lexical creativity and on the the methods that assure that the elements that portray the target text’s cultural inspirations are conveyed on the target text

This dissertation constructs a two-player sequential game to investigate the impacts of external knowledge stock, knowledge externality and tolerable coordination cost on individual’s decision-making in forming a link and the propensity for two authors in forming a co-authorship. In our model, we relax the assumption that the knowledge may exert positive and negative externality on an author’s knowledge production. In chapter 2, we deduce an individual’s likelihood to participate in collaboration is affected by his tolerable coordination cost. We show that this tolerable coordination cost is influenced by the benefit gains due to collaboration, an author’s own and his partner’s costs of effort. Specifically, this dissertation is the first to conclude that the knowledge externalities (positive and negative) and the external knowledge stock affect an author’s decision-making to engage in collaboration or not. In chapter 3, we examine the effects of expanding external knowledge stock on individual’s incentive to coauthor with others in the case of two authors have symmetric externalities. Our findings conclude that an academic with net positive (large negative) knowledge externality is more (less) likely to engage in co-authorship as external knowledge stock accumulates. Interestingly, the growing external knowledge promotes an academic with small negative knowledge externality to participate in scientific collaboration. Our model also predicts the impact of expanding external knowledge stock on two authors forming scientific collaboration. In an increased external knowledge stock, we predict that the propensity for two academics with positive knowledge externality forming co-authorship is always rising. This finding is surprisingly evident when two academics have small negative knowledge externality. In addition, we predict that the propensity for two academics with large negative knowledge externality forming co-authorship declines initially but rises gradually as external knowledge stock accumulates. In chapter 4, we re-examine the effects of growing external knowledge stock on individual’s willingness to coauthor with each other for two authors have asymmetric externalities. We can conclude that an author’s willingness to engage in collaboration is always increasing in growing external knowledge stock for he and his partner have positive or small negative externalities at the same time. But an author’s willingness to join co-authorship declines initially but rises ultimately as the external knowledge grows whilst two authors have opposite externalities: one has a positive or small negative externality and another has a large negative externality, or two authors have large externalities at the same time. We also characterize the impacts of growing external knowledge stock on propensity for two authors forming co-authorship if they both have asymmetrical externalities. In the age of knowledge explosion, co-authorship seems more likely to occur when two authors have positive or small negative externalities. Whilst the incidence of co-authorship declines initially but raises gradually in the case of two authors have opposite externalities: one has a positive or small negative externality and another has a large negative externality, or two authors have large externalities at the same time.Chinese Abstract ………………………………………………………i Abstract ………………………………………………………………iii 1. For the Gospel of Mathew, Jesus Christ fulfils what is announced by the Scriptures, even in the minor details. Therefore, the text might be seen as a landmine for those who know the Old Testament. Indeed, the entire New Testament offers a re-reading of the Old Testament. However, Mathew is more systematic and scientific. For instance, he constantly establishes a dialogue between the Old and the New Testament like in the counterpoint of classical music. The author of the first gospel follows a precise plan in the composition of his text, as it frequently happens in different novels of the universal literature, in our case, in the writings of Gabriel García Márquez. How Engineers Can Care from a Distance: Promoting Moral Sensitivity in Engineering Ethics Education

    No full text
Moral (or ethical) sensitivity is widely viewed as a foundational learning goal in engineering ethics education. We have argued in this paper is that this view of moral sensitivity cannot be readily transported from the nursing context to the engineering context on the basis of a care-analogy. The particularized care characteristic of the nursing context is decisively different from the generalized and universalized forms of care characteristic of the engineering context. Through a focus on care and maintenance, the engineering student’s moral sensitivity can be refined, opening up a perceptual awakening and affectivity towards the complex nature of the engineer’s Other. This awakening is in part promoted through an understanding of the ideology of neutrality as a moment in the history engineering. Becoming aware of this ideology as an ideology can then be seen as an activity of dividing loyalties that allows for a reflexive and critical view of the biases and presuppositions inherited within the world of engineering. This process of deepening the engineering student’s moral sensitivity is perhaps as much a process of the student becoming aware of her professional world, how it shapes her understanding of herself, and what it means to be a good engineer.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Ethics & Philosophy of TechnologyValues Technology and Innovatio

    Galáxias post-starburst no universo local

Esta hipótese é compatível coma baixa incidência de galáxias espirais em nossa amostra de galáxias PSB.Abstract: Post-starburst (PSB) galaxies are characterized by strong Balmer absorption lines and weak emission lines associated with star formation in their spectra. These characteristics indicate a predominance of young stellar populations and no ongoing star formation. Combining data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) with results from a spectral synthesis code, we selected 427 PSB galaxies in a volume limited sample containing 162 538 objects from the SDSS DR7 with redshift between 0.04 and 0.095. From the spectral synthesis we recovered the star formation histories (SFH) of these galaxies, showing that they assembled stellar mass later than the average galaxy population (in a % basis). Stellar masses of PSB galaxies are comparable to those of star-forming galaxies, but while star-forming galaxies assemble their stellar mass in a continuous way, PSB galaxies show a strong slope in their SFH, forming up to 40% of their stellar mass in the period between 150 Myrand 3 Gyr ago. This strong slope can be associated to major-mergers, although these events are not detectable using Galaxy Zoo data. According to Galaxy Zoo, only 14.5% of PSB galaxies show traces of mergers and less than 1% show strong morphological evidences of mergers. We briefly discuss the timescales involved in merger induced star formation and the lifetime of merger features, showing that the PSB phenomena may in fact be merger related, but by the time we detect the PSB spectral features, the merger evidences are already undetectable in SDSS photometry. This idea is compatible with the low incidence of spiral galaxies in the PSB sample

Modeling Airport Congestion Contagion by SIS Epidemic Spreading on Airline Networks

    No full text
We model airport congestion contagion as an SIS spreading process on an airport transportation network to explain airport vulnerability. The vulnerability of each airport is derived from the US Airport Network data as its congestion probability. We construct three types of airline networks to capture diverse features such as the frequency and duration of flights. The weight of each link augments its infection rate in SIS spreading process. The nodal infection probability in the meta-stable state is used as estimate the vulnerability of the corresponding airport. We illustrate that our model could reasonably capture the distribution of nodal vulnerability and rank airports in vulnerability evidently better than the random ranking, but not significantly better than using nodal network properties. Such congestion contagion model not only allows the identification of vulnerable airports but also opens the possibility to reduce global congestion via congestion reduction in few airports.Accepted author manuscriptMultimedia Computin

Suppressing Information Diffusion via Link Blocking in Temporal Networks

    No full text
In this paper, we explore how to effectively suppress the diffusion of (mis)information via blocking/removing the temporal contacts between selected node pairs. Information diffusion can be modelled as, e.g., an SI (Susceptible-Infected) spreading process, on a temporal social network: an infected (information possessing) node spreads the information to a susceptible node whenever a contact happens between the two nodes. Specifically, the link (node pair) blocking intervention is introduced for a given period and for a given number of links, limited by the intervention cost. We address the question: which links should be blocked in order to minimize the average prevalence over time? We propose a class of link properties (centrality metrics) based on the information diffusion backbone [19], which characterizes the contacts that actually appear in diffusion trajectories. Centrality metrics of the integrated static network have also been considered. For each centrality metric, links with the highest values are blocked for the given period. Empirical results on eight temporal network datasets show that the diffusion backbone based centrality methods outperform the other metrics whereas the betweenness of the static network, performs reasonably well especially when the prevalence grows slowly over time.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Multimedia ComputingIntelligent System
