Tax progressivity and social welfare with a continuum of inequality views

    No full text
We develop a framework for analysing the loss of social welfare due to taxation, where tax progressivity and regressivity, measured by the Kakwani index, are given interpretation in terms of welfare gain and loss, respectively. Our framework generalises the framework of Kakwani and Son (J Econ Inequal 19:185–212, 2021), by taking account of the intermediate inequality views, a continuum of combinations of the relative view (equal relative change of all incomes does not change inequality) and the absolute view (equal absolute change of all incomes does not change inequality). The welfare loss of taxation is decomposed into three components, one being a generalised Kakwani index, which accommodates the intermediate inequality views. We show that for a progressive (regressive) tax, moving closer to the relative view reduces (increases) the importance of progressivity (regressivity) for the welfare impact of the tax. The perception of the importance of progressivity and regressivity is thus affected by the inequality view taken. The empirical application considers the welfare loss of taxation in Croatia

The article reflects the experiences of the author after having served as one of the three international judges of the Constitutional Court of BiH from 1997 to 2002. Based on the relevant case-law of the Constitutional Court it gives a basic overview of the constitutional structure of BiH and analyses the position of the Court vis-à-vis other institutions established under the Dayton-Agreement and the powers of judicial review and human rights protection based on its appellate jurisdiction. Moreover means of interpretation and the elements of constitutional doctrine elaborated through case-law as well as organisational and procedural matters such as the role of dissenting opinions are discussed. In conclusion the article reflects the role of the Constitutional Court in transition from an ethnically divided and war-torn society to democracy and the effective protection of human and minority rights

Uloga boje u gradnji glazbenog oblika u odabranim djelima Marka Ruždjaka / Sound Spaces: The Role of Timbre in Building Musical Form Within a Selection of Marko Ruždjak's Work

    No full text
Some of the most successful works in the opus of Marko Ruždjak would have been impossible to conceive without the clarinet, the composer’s favourite instrument, as well as wit- hout the guitar, percussion, and voice (soprano, baritone or choir). The author researches how the composer’s choice of instrumental timbres and the voicing of the instruments as solo part or part of a larger sound aggregates (or units) is guided by a singular idea, which can be defi- ned as sound space. The timbre in this context is not conceived just as an element of a two- dimensional unit (building contrasts or overflowing and fusion in the temporal flow), rather it participates in the building of the spatial (and emotional) perspective. It contributes to a building of a specific musical form and expression. Ruždjak’s works have been analyzed through the categories that are linked to the Klangkomposition aesthetics of the Sixties. In the first part of the text, the formal function of individual parameters such as dynamic and regi- ster in the works Passamezzo, Tentatio, Canto peregrino, Versus, Ricercar is analyzed. In the se- cond part of the text, the analysis of Odrazi, Andantino, Notturno is developed through the more complex dimensions such as "static immobile surfaces", "surfaces in movement", "globally static surfaces, flecked with internal movement". They have been deduced from the published and unpublished texts by Györgi Ligeti. The theoretical background for the analysis of the sound's formal functions in the works of Ruždjak is part of the Klangkomposition's aesthetic. Together with the analysis of harmonic and motivic dimensions of the composer's language, they conduct to the possibility of a deeper understanding of the synthesis between various stylistic trajectories that are characteristic for the musical path of Marko Ruždjak

This thesis illustrates the static labor supply model using a large cross sectional data set encompassing the countries of Britain. I focus on estimating the labor force participation decision what is referred in the literature as labor supply on the extensive margin. The sensitivity along the extensive margin is expressed by calculating two specifications of a participation elasticity, defined as the percentage change in the labor force participation rate induced by a one percentage change in the gross wage or the net effective wage. The elasticities of labor supply are computed separatately for men and women. The basic problem in estimating labor supply models with non-workers is unobservability of their wage rates that makes a non-random nature of the sample. I follow Heckman (1979) approach to correct for sample selection bias by estimating wage equation for workers and non-workers. Predicted wage rates along with non-wage incomes and a range of household characteristics are used in the probit regression model while the standard errors of the predicted wage rates were bootstrapped to correct for error-prone sampling distribution of predicted wage regressors that are nonlinear functions of the estimated model parameters. I find that semi-elasticities of labor supply on the extensive margin with respect to gross wage are 0.09 and -0.03 percentage points for men and women, respectively. Using the net effective wage rate these elasticities are 0.10 and -0.01 for men and women, respectively. Both estimated elasticities are marginally larger in the net effective wage specification which I interpreted as a marginal incentive for men to join the labor market and less disincentive effect for women to withdraw from the labor market

Marko Marulić in German Lexicons and Encyclopedias

    No full text
The author has surveyed German lexicons, encyclopedias, old and new bookselling inventories and bibliographical compendiums in order to establish the extent to and the manner in which Marko Marulić is represented there, finding out that the earliest such record goes back to 1568, the year in which the bookseller and publisher Georg Willer from Augsburg entered one of Marulić’s printed works into his catalogue issued on the occasion of the autumn fair in Frankfurt (Fig. 1). The author asserts that Willer, the most influential German bookseller of the day, could also have been the publisher of the second German translation of De institutione (Sech Bucher..., Fig.2). Considering the contemporary demand for Marulić’s works, the book should have promised good earnings, which Willer, as experienced publisher and bookseller, surely would not have missed. Marulić and his works reappear in German sources in the 18th century, when we find his name in large lexicons and collections of universal knowledge (Figs. 3-7).The 19th century was in a particular way interested in incunabula and early 16th century editions, so that it was not before the last quarter of this century that any systematic work was done on the registration of the 16th century editions. In 1969, in Munich, a special committee was established with the purpose of publishing the series entitled Verzeichnis der im deutschen Sprachbereich erscheinenen Drucke des XVI. Jahrhunderts. Thanks to the collaboration of the renown Croatian Slavist and bibliographer, Josip Badalić, in the 13th book of the edition Marulić is represented with twenty editions
