A selection program using reciprocal recurrent selection procedures in maize (Zea mays L.) was developed. Intra-and interpopulation selection procedures were used for two maize populations BS10 and RSSSC. Intrapopulation selection procedures included phenotypic mass selection for multiple leaf and multiple stalk-rot disease resistance and S1 family selection for grain yield in a high-yield environment. Interpopulation improvement involved selection of testcrosses of S1 family×inbred tester in a high-yield environment. Evaluations of populations per se, population crosses and populations×testers for response to three cycles of selection for grain yield were conducted at four environments. Evaluation of populations per se and population crosses for response to three cycles of selection for multiple leaf disease and multiple stalk-rot resistance was conducted at disease nursery in 1985. The results indicate that selection response was consistent among environments. Gain from selection was satisfactory in populations per se, population crosses and populations×testers for grain yield, multiple leaf disease resistance and multiple stalk-rot resistance. Linear response to three cycles of selection for grain yield for BS10, RSSSC, BS10×RSSSC, BS10×B37, and RSSSC×B79 were: 0.95, 0.69, 0.65, 0.65 and 0.24 Mg/ha/cycle, respectively. The rates of gain for grain yield obtained in the present study compare favorably with published reports. Linear response for stalk lodging for BS10, BS10×RSSSC and BS10×B37 were: -9.0, -5.4 and -3.5%/cycle, respectively. All populations per se, population crosses and populations×testers showed significant increase in penetrometer reading. Increase in plant height and ear height were observed for RSSSC, BS10×RSSSC and RSSSC×B79. Population BS10 showed an increase in 300-kernel weight and kernel number per ear, and a decrease in ear number per 100 plants. Population RSSSC only showed an increase in 300-kernel weight. Three cycles of selection slightly increased grain moisture in BS10 and BS10×B37. This result indicates the procedures of selection in a high-yield environment are beneficial in improving grain yield, multiple disease resistance and stalk lodging resistance in maize populations per se and their hybrids.
在高產環境下,利用BS10及RSSSC兩個玉米族群進行兼顧族羣內及族羣間改良之相互輪迴選拔。族羣內之改良包括多種葉斑病、莖腐病等抗病性的外表型混合選種及S1系統在高產環境下之產量評估。族羣間之改良則包括測交系統在高產環境下之產量試驗及選拔。三個輪迴之選種效應評估,分別利用族羣、族羣雜種及族羣測交種等,於四個不同環境下進行產量試驗;並利用族羣及族羣雜種於病圃檢定其對葉斑病及莖腐病之抵抗性。試驗結果摘要如下:
(1)選拔效應不因評估環境之不同而有明顯差異。
(2)族羣本身、族羣雜種以及族羣測交種之子實產量、多種葉病與莖腐病之抵抗性等之改良效果頗為顯著。在子實產量方面,BS10, RSSSC, BS10×RSSSC, BS10×B37,及RSSSC×B79分別達到0.95、0.69、0.65、0.65及0.24噸/公頃/輪迴之增進效果。在抗倒伏性方面,BS10, BS10×RSSSC及BS10×B37分別為-9.0、-5.4及-3.5%/輪迴之選種效應。所有族羣、族羣雜種及族羣測交種之Penetrometer reading亦顯著地增強。
(3)就本研究之育種目標而言,相關性狀之改變,以合意者居多。其中較為不利之變化為RSSSC, BS10×RSSSC 及RSSSC×B79等之株高及穗位高之增加,及BS10每株穗數之減少。有利的部分則包括BS10之300粒重及每穗粒數,及RSSSC 300粒重之增加等。
(4)本試驗結果顯示:高產環境下進行相互輪迴選拔,對改良玉米子實產量、病害抵抗性及抗倒伏性成效頗著,為一有利的選拔方式
Simulation techniques for generalized Gaussian densities
This contribution deals with Monte Carlo simulation of generalized Gaussian random variables. Such a parametric family of distributions has been proposed in many applications in science to describe physical phenomena and in engineering, and it seems also useful in modeling economic and financial data. For values of the shape parameter a within a certain range, the distribution presents heavy tails. In particular, the cases a=1/3 and a=1/2 are considered. Clinical and functional studies of autoimmune disorders of neuromuscular transmission
Inherited and acquired disorders of the neuromuscular junction are an important cause of muscle weakness and fatigability. In this thesis I focus on the autoimmune disorders of neuromuscular transmission. Myasthenia Gravis (MG) is the most common of these diseases and is typically caused by antibodies against the post-synaptic acetylcholine receptor. Lambert Eaton Myasthenic Syndrome (LEMS) is a pre-synaptic disorder typically caused by antibodies against voltage gated calcium channels (VGCC). With regard to LEMS, my main aim was to gain a more complete understanding of the pathomechanisms of the disease. To date, the direct effect of LEMS IgG on presynaptic neurotransmitter release had not been investigated in detail. I examined how LEMS IgG affects neurotransmitter release by imaging action potential dependent vesicle exocytosis using a fluorescent dye. I found that LEMS IgG significantly inhibited the rate of synaptic vesicle release but this effect was lost in synapses from a Cacna1a knockout mouse. These data provide direct evidence that LEMS is caused by impaired neurotransmitter release due to an effect on P/Q-type VGCCs. With regard to MG, I studied the long-term outcome of patients with thymomatous and non-thymomatous MG after thymectomy and found that in general the outcome was favourable in the majority of patients with 34% of patients achieving complete stable remission. I also reviewed the long-term outcome of patients after a severe exacerbation of MG requiring ITU admission. Despite the significant mortality associated with severe exacerbations of MG, it was found that specialised neuro-intensive care was associated with a good long-term prognosis in the majority of patients. There were no significant differences in outcome in those with early or late onset MG. Overall the data presented in this thesis provide new insights into the pathomechanisms of LEMS IgG and provide new information regarding the long-term outcome of patients with MG
A review of occupation-based social classifications for social research
This working paper is a review of issues associated with measuring occupations and using occupation-based socio-economic classifications in social science research. The review is orientated towards researchers who undertake secondary analyses of large scale micro-level social science datasets. The paper begins with an outline of how to handle raw occupational information. This is followed by an introduction to the two main approaches to measuring occupations, and a third lesser known but intellectually innovative approach. The three approaches are social class schemes, social stratification scales and the microclass approach. International comparisons are briefly described and a discussion of intersectionality with other key variables such as age and gender is provided. We are careful to emphasise that we are not advocating the uncritical adoption of any one particular socio-economic measure over and above other alternatives. Rather we are advocating that researchers should choose from the portfolio of existing socio-economic measures in an informed and empirically defensible way and we strongly advocate undertaking sensitivity analyses. We conclude that researchers should always use existing socio-economic measures that have agreed upon and well documented standards. We strongly advise researchers not to develop their own measures without strong justification, nor to use existing measures in an un-prescribed or ad hoc manner

Report on industrial attachment with R.J. Crocker Consultants Pte Ltd
This report documents the undertaking of the author’s six months of industrial attachment. It was the industrial attachment that gave him the opportunity to discover the innovative skills and expertise from his fellow colleagues working the organization. Throughout the attachment, the author had learnt a great deal from various trained and experienced engineers. He had been exposed to a variety of training namely (1) reinforcement concrete design, (2) steel and connection design, (3) modelling structures for design and analysis using software, (4) visual inspections for buildings, (5) preparing tender documents, (6) drawing, presentation and attending and (7) handling online submissions for building inspections, structural plans, design calculations, etc. Furthermore, by attending project meetings, preparing materials for presentations, tendering documents and drawings to privatized companies and public sectors all bestowed the author a concrete understanding of the type and quality of work required of and produced by a qualified engineer. Without the industrial attachment, all these practical skills and knowledge might not have been attainable by learning in the university alone. It was overall a fruitful experience

This work is an extension of a bibliography prepared by the author as part of a final report submitted to the U.S. Bureau of Mines for grant # G026/t002 entitled "Manganese-bearing ores of the Cuyuna iron range, east-central Minnesota, Phase 1". This bibliography, though directed primarily towards the geologic and mining literature of the Cuyuna range, does include the major works on the metallurgical aspects of the Cuyuna ores. For historical interest the very earliest publications are included.
