Trivia Night 
 
 You’re Invited!  Put your knowledge to the test on Friday, January 24 
at Trivia Night.  Doors open at 6:45 and trivia starts at 7 PM at Murray 
Library!  We’ll have four rounds of trivia to test your knowledge in a 
variety of categories.  Gather classmates or colleagues to form a team 
or join up with friendly folks when you arrive.  All in the Messiah 
community are welcome.  Teams can include up to six players.

Meet Murray Library’s Newest Librarian 
 Murray Library is delighted to announce the promotion of Rachael Jasitt to the 
position of Collection Strategies Librarian as of January 1! Rachael completed her 
Master of Science in Library Science from PennWest-Clarion in December 2024. 
This follows a Master of Arts in Cultural Heritage Management from Johns 
Hopkins University and her 2019 Bacher of Arts degree in History with minors in 
Education and TESOL from Messiah (College) University.  
 
In her new role, Rachael will coordinate all aspects of the library’s print and 
digital collections to ensure that the library meets the needs of our students, 
faculty, and staff. Rachael will also manage the library website and ensure that our 
digital services are working as they should. This is not an easy task, but Rachael 
has demonstrated that she is up to the challenge.  
 
Like all Murray Librarians, Rachael will work with specific departments to offer 
instruction sessions and help faculty and students alike make the best use of 
library materials. She also provides library instruction to First Year Seminar and 
Critical Reading and Writing courses. Rachael has demonstrated creativity and 
innovation in designing activities for students and we are excited to see what 
other great ideas she generates to help our students use the library to advance their 
academic goals! 
 
 
 What’s New at the Library? 
   January 2025 
 
Rachael has held a number of positions at Murray Library since 2020 including Evening Circulation Supervisor and, more recently, 
Access Services Specialist. Rachael began Murray’s Seed Library and has already been managing the library website since 2023. 
We are grateful for the opportunity to promote Rachael into this role and for the work she has already done for Murray Library.

Celebrating Jasmine:  
A Talented Musician and Library Student Worker 
 
 
and Wednesdays when the library re-shelves music books and scores. This experience has given her a deeper understanding of 
our music collections, and she has enjoyed learning more about the library’s e-resources, such as Classical Scores Library and 
the Naxos recordings, which are excellent tools for music majors. 
Jasmine encourages you to take advantage of the many free music opportunities at Messiah, including student recital 
performances. She believes supporting these events is a wonderful way to engage with the music department and show 
appreciation for the talent of our hard-working students. We are proud of Jasmine’s achievements and look forward to all the 
amazing things she will accomplish in her musical career! Jasmine’s recital recording can be found in the On Demand section of 
the Messiah Arts website.

We are excited to celebrate Jasmine Dickson, a music performance major who recently 
achieved a significant milestone in her musical journey by performing her senior trumpet 
recital on November 16. Jasmine, who has been playing the trumpet since 4th grade, 
captivated the audience with a variety of pieces, including her favorite, Jubilance by William 
Himes, which she performed on cornet. 
Looking ahead, Jasmine is applying to graduate schools to pursue a Master’s in Music and 
plans to audition during the spring semester. Her ultimate dream is to perform with the Boston 
Symphony Orchestra. We have no doubt that her dedication and talent will lead her to great 
success. 
In addition to her musical accomplishments, Jasmine has been a valued member of our library 
team. As a circulation desk student worker, she has especially enjoyed working on Tuesdays 
 
 
 
 
 
New EBSCOhost UI 
 
EBSCOhost has received some exciting upgrades to enhance 
your research experience. New features for you to explore 
include intuitive navigation, advanced search parameters and 
filters, easy access to eBooks and Concept Maps for diving 
deeper into research topics. We will be live beginning 
January 3, 2025! If you have any questions or need research 
assistance, you can reach the librarians at 
library@messiah.edu. 
 
 
ChatGPT, launched in November 2022, quickly gained popularity, reaching one million users in its first week. Developed by OpenAI, it 
is a large language model (LLM) tool that uses deep learning to generate text based on user prompts. 
Here are some positive and ethical ways that ChatGPT can enhance the academic research experience. The Murray Library team 
encourages you to try out these techniques, but remember to check with your professor to ensure that you are allowed to use AI in this 
way: 
1. Idea Generation and Research Support: ChatGPT can help brainstorm research topics, generate keyword lists, and even 
suggest Boolean search strategies for more effective database queries.  
For instance, you can ask it to list keywords related to a research topic, such as "Give me potential paper topic ideas related to 
innovations in vaccine creation," and follow up with additional questions for further refinement on the advancements and 
approaches in vaccine creation.  
2. Roleplaying for Focused Assistance: Users can engage with ChatGPT by setting clear expectations for its role. For example, a 
student researching the role of interfaith dialogue in promoting global peace might prompt: "I am an undergraduate student 
researching the role of interfaith dialogue in promoting global peace. Could you suggest 20 keywords to use in academic 
databases?" This focused interaction puts ChatGPT in the role of a content expert. 
 
Tips for Effective Use: To get the best results, ask clear and specific questions. While ChatGPT can assist with many tasks, always 
verify the information it provides, as it may not be accurate. Additionally, avoid sharing private or sensitive data with the tool. 
By leveraging ChatGPT in academic research, users can streamline their research process, generate ideas, and refine their searches. This 
should help users maximize their use of library tools like Primo and subject specific databases, save users time on fruitless searches, and 
help them find the best resources possible.

The holiday season is a time to come together and
celebrate, but it is also a time where our environmental
footprint begins to grow. While in the midst of celebrating,
it is easy to overlook the impact of our choices. Fortunately,
small adjustments can help us have a more sustainable
holiday. 
Start by swapping traditional holiday lights for energy-
efficient LEDs, or get creative with natural decorations like
pinecones, wreaths, and dried orange slices. Or you can try
decorating your tree by making popcorn strings like we did
at our Energy Pop Up event in December. 
For gift giving, consider practical items like high-quality
kitchen supplies, cleaning products, or experiences rather
than things that might go unused. Shopping at thrift -->

-stores is also a great way to find unique,
secondhand gifts that can be given a second
life. When wrapping gifts, choose eco-
friendly options like fabric or newspaper,
and make it a habit to reuse boxes and bags
each year. In December, Messiah
Earthkeepers had a Sustainable Gift Wrap
event where they made their own wrapping
paper out of recycled materials. 
Food waste is another big issue during the
holidays. Plan meals with seasonal and
locally sourced ingredients, and find ways
to reuse food scraps creatively, like making
soup from uneaten vegetables. Composting
food waste is also a sustainable choice. Be
sure to bring reusable containers to family
gatherings to take leftovers home and
reduce waste. 
Transportation is a significant part of
holiday travel. To minimize emissions,
consider carpooling or using public
transportation. If flying, book direct flights
rather than connecting flights. As we
welcome the new year, try setting
sustainability goals for yourself. This can be
reducing single-use plastics, starting a
compost pile, or switching to a renewable
energy source.

By making mindful choices this holiday season,
we can embrace the spirit of giving without
compromising the health of our planet. Happy

How can it be 40 or 50 degrees one winter day, then drop to 19
the next? Is this what climate change looks like? It’s not just
Central Pennsylvania experiencing this kind of wild weather
swing. Winters around the globe are changing, and it’s all
because of climate change. Temperatures are rising, which
means warmer winters—and that’s happening pretty much
everywhere. The big culprit? Carbon pollution from burning
fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas. These emissions are
warming the planet and driving these unpredictable shifts in
climate.
In fact, winters are warming faster than any other season in
many parts of the world. In the U.S., winters have warmed by
nearly 3°F on average over the last 50 years, according to
Climate Central. And in northern states like Alaska, Minnesota,
Vermont, and Wisconsin, the temperature increase is even more
dramatic, with winter warming averaging over 5°F.
Along with warmer temperatures, we’re also seeing more
extreme weather events. Major winter storms, lake-effect snow,
and heavy snowfalls are becoming more frequent as a result of
climate change. Why? Because a warmer planet evaporates
more water into the atmosphere. More moisture means heavier
precipitation—whether it’s in the form of intense snowstorms or
heavy rainfall.
As winters continue to warm, we can expect more
unpredictable weather and extreme events to become the new
normal. While the changes may seem subtle at first, the long-
term effects of climate change are already reshaping our
seasons. To slow this trend and stabilize our climate, it’s crucial
to reduce carbon emissions and shift toward more sustainable
energy sources. The weather’s already giving us a wake-up call
—now it’s up to each of us to make choices that can help turn
things around before it’s too late.

Swap N’ Mend 2024
Campus Race to Zero Waste is an annual 8-
week competition from February to March that
all college campuses have the opportunity to
compete in. This competition focuses on
encouraging universities to reduce waste and
be mindful of their environmental impact. 
We track the campus’ trash and recycling
tonnage and how much compost we
accumulate every week and compare our
week-to-week data to see how much waste
we accumulate. 
Each week we will host different sustainability
related events to help encourage sustainable
actions on campus. Here are this year's

There’s a balance in things that just feel right.
One packet of sugar,
two pumps of vanilla.
Steep it for three minutes, maybe four,
and you’ve got your perfect cup of tea.
Three parts strawberry yoghurt
with one part Greek.
Be generous with granola,
add a sprinkle of chocolate chips,
and you’ve got your perfect breakfast delicacy.
We live by these preferences,
what suits you
might not seem quite right
to me.
It’s individuality.
How silly,
the things that make us different,
hides itself in these simplicities. 
My friend rejects the philosophy of having a best friend.
I’m starting to think she’s on to something.
It’s like printing labels and sticking them onto jars:
“Sugar,” “Salt,” “Flour,”
But what if I no longer want to use this jar for:
“Sugar” or “Salt” or “Flour”?
What if I’m at a stage of life where I want to put
jellybeans in this jar?
You’d have to go through the inconvenience of peeling the label off.
Soak it in warm water. Perhaps it will peel off faster. Easier.
Even then, sometimes the adhesive lingers.
A smudge, constantly in your face, reminding you,
I once was “Sugar”.

An interactive web app / map that allows the viewer to swipe and compare 1901 map with modern day aerial photo of the same location. Contains street view showing historical photographs of the Eighth Ward / Capitol Park between 1890 and 1930. The visitor can search by address, browse households to view residents, and read stories about the Old Eighth Ward, the neighborhood in the shadow of the capitol.
