Our study relies on an artistic, cultural and philo sophical corpus. Between the theological monopoly and the medical one, art claims for its own authority when it comes to the attention shown to monstrosity, by asserting foundations for a thought opened to difference. From the first part of the century, many artists and writers are led by a breaking attitude against dominant social norms, and open themselves toward a modern, renewed sensibility, as can be seen in the case of Pontormo’s Deposition. One question rises straight away: what is the conscience of body and individuality at the XVIth century? I made a selection of authors, that, famous though they are in the cultural debate of their times, are not renowned in the field of teratology, but that nevertheless brought substantial contribution to the cause of deformity, hence revealing a new thought. As much important is, to our view, a choice of small stories that contributed to the raise of a concept of educability. Among them, we lay the stress on a significant episodes in the questioning of doxa concerning deformity at the XVIth century: French king Henri the IInd, who, despite social conventions, tried a first approach to educability

When child agency stands from a child’s point of view : the point of view of (on) children in the analysis of artistic and recreational practices, at school, in museums and outdoor public spaces

Based on my various involvements in the educational landscape, this thesis presents an ethnographic analysis of situated utopias, defined as counter-spaces to institutional establishments (Foucault, 2009). Designed by artists and social activists, these heterotopias offer artistic and recreational practices for children at school, in museums and outdoor public spaces. At the intersection of formal, non-formal and informal education (Brougère & Bézille, 2007), these multi-situated field in France and Denmark, by contrast, offer insights into the point of view of children and the way in which it expresses itself. Commitment to childhood in research comes through analytical methods with the different actors in the field, that is to say the children by the relationship that they maintain with a world shared with adults. In this sense, this thesis subscribes to an epistemology that defines the child as “ the author ” of his own story (Go, 2011) and children as producers of their own culture (Arleo & Delalande, 2011) within the paradigm of an Education lasting a lifetime, (Le Grand & Colin, 2008) that is based on shared experience. Through an interdisciplinary approach, we will understand childhood in relation to the society which surrounds it, and free the child from an educational relationship concerned by what may be good or bad for him, in order to enable his re-interpretation of the world (Corsaro, 1992). Between a childhood utopia and the reality of institutional constraints, children are faced with contradictory issues, inherent to a contextualised educational relationship. Nevertheless, we will see how within these paradoxical injunctions on the playground and in artistic activities, they create an escape path (Guattari, 2011), that may reveal to us a shared world

The phenomenon of dropping out of higher education : qualitative study of eight participants from Guadeloupe and Senegal

While lifelong learning is in full expansion, institutions of higher education and research are encountering an increasingly recurrent phenomenon, the abandonment of higher education –– some students find themselves obliged to abandon a course of study during their studies. This research work attempts to better characterize this phenomenon, which is recurrent in the territories of Guadeloupe and Senegal. The first part of the thesis traces the context, drawing on the weight of the colonial history of these two areas, and its impact on the educational system and student mobility. Then, we take into account a theoretical toolkit including the modeling of learning through various paradigms as well as the notion of child attachment –– with the idea that the cognitive development of the human subject is related to the affective nourishment received from attachment figures. We also integrate the theory of the institution, the theory of systems and the theory of representations. Finally, these reflections lead us to conduct eight semi-directive interviews exploited by content analysis (Bardin type) and by the use of a software. In view of these initial results, we are led to undertake a second reading, closer to the representations. It is then that the relevance of the hypotheses developed becomes satisfactory

Theory of moments in social work with homeless people

Assistance programmes for homeless people represent a complex system in which those seeking help are dealt with largely based on the temporality of the urgency of their need and on a housing-based approach, in which they are constantly encouraged to leave room for the next person. This thesis reveals the chronicizing mechanism and housing-based approach that dominate the field of homeless assistance, while attempting to identity alternative possibilities by initiating a dialogue with the theory of moment (Lefebvre, Hess). It attempts to move past the housing-based approach by introducing the concept of living, defined on the basis of the theory of moment as building one’s domaine, in other words all the space-time points in which the aspects of an individual’s presence, those moments, are implemented. This approach seeks to explore the aspects of the “supported” person’s presence by reconstructing his or her domaine, and also to look at the notion of presence in terms of the professional moments of the social worker. After identifying five possible professional moments for social work practitioners involved in supporting people referred to as homeless, we propose an approach to support that is centred on relationships and living, defined as the art of solidarity movements (Pineau, 1998) and presences

Non-education as a support for self-directed learning : study of an experience as a facilitator of learning in an alternative school in France

Comment s'y former ?Based on a singular experience as a learning facilitator in an alternative school of diverse inspiration, this thesis offers a more fundamental reflection about the meaning and sustainability of conventional school practices in the anthropocene context. From a synchronicity between the discovery of permaculture and democratic schools was born the intuition that a « non-education » inspired by the non-action of Chinese philosophy would offer less normative, coercive and productivist educational perspectives without losing efficiency. The present research explores this idea along two distinct axes. The first one looks into the school where my practice as a facilitator was born and in which I carried out an initial work of ethnographic intention. Based on observational data gathered over seven years of immersion, from different positions and levels of involvement, on non-directive interviews and on various documents, the thesis offers an ecosystemic reading of this school, seen and experienced as a « living school », highlighting the conditions, constraints and resources from which this educational singularity emerged. Autoethnographic vignettes of intense moments of self-education, transcribed into comic strips, will serve, in a second part, as support for a reflective analysis whose target is to answer the following questions : what is non-education ? How does it translate into practice ? How is it different from education ? What skills does it rely on ? How to train for it

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
