Lettere e i libri degli altri: lições de literatura na biografia intelectual de Italo Calvino
No full textTese (doutorado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Literatura, Florianópolis, 2010Esta tese é dedicada ao estudo do epistolário de Italo Calvino (1923-1985) constituído de Lettere 1940-1985 (2001) e I libri degli altri: Lettere 1947-1981 (1991). A carta, vista aqui como gênero literário, é abordada nos cinco capítulos da tese como instrumento de crítica biográfica e continente testemunhal da poética do autor. A consecução do objetivo principal da tese ocorre com o registro e a análise de contribuições epistolares calvinianas para a teoria e a crítica literárias e os estudos da tradução. Os romances, contos e ensaios de Calvino constituem o foco de sua vasta fortuna crítica, italiana e estrangeira, reservando-se ao epistolário um papel secundário. Mas o exame do epistolário calviniano permite constatar que esse significativo corpus de 1303 cartas representa um campo fértil de pesquisa, devido à polifonia temática representativa da biografia intelectual de Calvino. Nos dois primeiros capítulos, é realizado o estudo das cartas como narrativa epistolar que, a exemplo da narrativa histórica e da narrativa jornalística, representa fonte primária ou testemunhal, neste caso, da vida literária e do empenho de Calvino, na relação com seus leitores, para a formação do leitorado italiano, ao mesmo tempo em que traz acenos de suas reflexões teóricas a respeito da literatura. Os três capítulos finais registram contribuições para a teoria literária, a crítica literária e os estudos da tradução, reveladoras do fio condutor da poética calviniana, dos primeiros escritos partigiani até os "valores a salvar" em literatura propostos em Lezioni americane (1988).This thesis is dedicated to the study of the epistolary by Italo Calvino (1923-1985) constituted by Lettere 1940-1985 (2001) and I libri degli altri: Lettere 1947-1981 (1991). The letter, which is seen here as a literary genre, is approached in the five chapters of the thesis as a tool for biographical criticism and testimonial continent of the author's poetics. The thesis main objective is the analysis of some Calvinian epistolary contributions to the literary theory and criticism, and Translation Studies. Calvino's novels, short stories and essays constitute the focus of his vast Italian and foreign critical fortune, being reserved to the epistolary a secondary role. However, the examination of Calvino's epistolary allows validating that this significant corpus of 1303 letters represents a fertile field of research, due to the thematic polyphony representative of the author's intellectual biography. The first two chapters concentrate on the epistolary narrative that, alike the historical and the journalistic narratives, represents primary or testimonial source, in this case, of the literary life and of the resolution of Calvino, in the relationship with his readers, in the formation of the Italian readership and, at the same time, in pointing out to some aspects of his theoretical reflections regarding literature. The three final chapters address some Calvinian contributions to the literary theory and criticism and Translation Studies, revealing the conductive thread of Calvino's poetics, from the first partigiani writings to the "values to save" in literature, proposed in Lezioni americane (1988)

Ele estuda especificamente as reflexões do autor sobre tradução, contidas em alguns de seus ensaios críticos selecionados para esta pesquisa, e também na metalinguagem do romance Se um viajante numa noite de inverno (1990). O que se quer é identificar e discutir quais são, na concepção do autor, as potencialidades e as limitações da tradução na sua relação com a literatura.The present work intends to discuss the thought of Italo Calvino concerning translation of literary works. It specifically studies the reflections of the author on translation as expressed in his critical essays selected for this research and in the metalinguistic novel If on a winter's night a traveler (1981). A partire dagli scambi epistolari, che ne tratteggiano un ritratto a tutto tondo, si è cercato di indagare i rapporti con Cesare Pavese ed Elio Vittorini per gettare luce sulle reciproche influenze e sui personali esempi di originalità. Un particolare focus è stato riservato al rapporto con Leonardo Sciascia: dalla "scoperta" da parte di Calvino del giovane "maestro di scuola" siciliano alla durevole amicizia che li ha uniti, in un rigoglioso scambio di pareri, consigli e discussioni

No full textNon una bibliografia, ma una vasta ricerca, basata su criteri scientifici, e mirante a definire la produzione tipografica, dal 1470 al 1602, degli antichi libri italiani di poesia: un panorama delineato mediante i consueti parametri descrittivi (con l’adozione delle procedure ISTC e EDIT16, per assicurare la massima compatibilità dei dati), ma ricostruito sulla base di un criterio, il contenuto, quasi mai preso in considerazione dai repertori bibliografici. L’autore non si è quindi fermato al lavoro di schedatura compiuto presso la sede dell’ICCU, o consultando cataloghi cartacei e a stampa di numerose biblioteche; per valutare e mostrare l’attinenza di centinaia di opere all'area d’indagine, ha dovuto aprire gran parte dei 5270 volumi censiti (e di molti altri esclusi dopo tale verifica). Ne è scaturita un’opera che, pur non avanzando alcuna pretesa di esaustività e di assoluta precisione bibliografica (impossibile a un solo studioso impegnato in una ricerca così ampia), si è rivelata efficace e citatissimo strumento di orientamento e consultazione per numerose ricerche concernenti la materia censita. Strutturata alfabeticamente per nome d’autore, l’opera fornisce in ogni scheda l’indicazione di una biblioteca proprietaria del volume registrato, o almeno la fonte bibliografica da cui l’informazione deriva. Né mancano gli indispensabili indici degli autori secondari, dei tipografi, dei luoghi di stampa e cronologico: strumenti realizzati grazie a una precoce applicazione di apposite strumentazioni informatiche.Not a bibliography, but an extensive research, based on scientific criteria, and aimed at defining the typographic production, from 1470 to 1602, of the ancient Italian books of poetry: a panorama outlined by the usual descriptive parameters (with the adoption of ISTC procedures and EDIT16, to ensure maximum data compatibility), but rebuilt on the basis of a criterion, the content, almost never taken into consideration by the bibliographic repertoires. The author has not therefore stopped at the work of cataloging carried out at the ICCU headquarters, or by consulting manuscript and printed catalogs of numerous libraries; to assess and show the relevance of hundreds of works to the survey area, it had to open most of the 5270 volumes surveyed (and many others excluded after this verification). The result is a work that, while not making any claim to exhaustiveness and absolute bibliographic precision (impossible for a single scholar engaged in such a wide-ranging research), has proved to be an effective and highly cited instrument of orientation and consultation for numerous researches concerning the subject matter. Structured alphabetically by author's name, the work provides in each card the indication of a library that owns the recorded volume, or at least the bibliographic source from which the information derives. Then there are the indispensable indices of secondary authors, typographers, printing and chronological places: devices created thanks to an early application of special computer tools

No full textIn 2021, the National Central Library in Rome signed a deposit agreement with Giovanna Calvino for the preservation of Italo Calvino’s archive and library. A new room, dedicated to the Italian author, recreates his studio and, at the same time, becomes a laboratory for international studies and research on Calvino’s figure and work.The article reports the speech on the inauguration of the Italo Calvino Room and reconstructs the main stages of the journey that brought ‘Cosimo’s books’ to the National Central Library in Rome.Nel 2021 la Biblioteca nazionale centrale di Roma ha siglato con Giovanna Calvino una convenzione di comodato grazie alla quale l’istituto diventa il luogo di conservazione del fondo archivistico e bibliografico di Italo Calvino, inaugurando una sala a lui dedicata con l’intento di ricostruire il suo laboratorio di scrittura e, al contempo, divenire essa stessa un laboratorio di studi e ricerche internazionali sulla figura e sull’opera dello scrittore.L’articolo riporta il discorso di inaugurazione della Sala Italo Calvino, nel quale sono ricostruite le tappe principali del viaggio che ha portato i ‘libri di Cosimo’ fino alla Biblioteca nazionale centrale di Roma

Resiting genre : a study of contemporary Italian travel writing in English translation
No full textThis thesis aims to highlight the presence of a large and varied production of contemporary
Italian travel writing and to analyse the reasons for its 'invisibility' in the Italian literary
system and critical tradition. Through the use of a comparative approach to genre and of
current theories developed in the area of Translation Studies, the thesis will outline the
different status attributed to travel writing in the Anglo-American and the Italian literary
systems. Such a comparative approach allows the study to escape the narrow confines of a
perspective based on the idea of national literature and to adopt a wider view, which, in
turn, highlights the presence of phenomena otherwise easily overlooked or discarded as
insignificant.
The peculiar characteristics of travel writing, a genre mostly based on the
representation of the Other for a home audience, are also analysed in order to point out their
affinity with translation practices and, ultimately, to underline the 'double translation'
implied by translated travel writing.
The case studies which make up the remaining part of the thesis are intended to
illustrate different aspects of the genre of travel writing; to provide scope for an analysis of
its boundaries and connections with other genres (ranging from ethnography to
autobiography, from journalism to fiction, from the essay to the novel); and to illustrate the
way in which generic expectations influence both the selection of texts for translation and
the strategies adopted when translating and marketing them for a new audience.
The writings of twentieth-century Italian explorers to Tibet, and their translations
into English, constitute a significant case of adaptation of foreign texts to the needs and
expectations of a British audience (and to the British interests in the geographical area
concerned).
The works of Oriana Fallaci and their different reception in Italy with respect to the
UK and the USA illustrate the way in which personal biography and generic choices can
intersect, determining both the popular image and the critical success of an author and of
her work.
Calvino's choice to sublimate the genre of travel writing in the stylized fiction of Le
citta invisibili is treated as an example of the way in which a text which is meant to provide
an escape from a low-status genre can become an icon of that same genre once it is
translated and read in a different cultural context.
Finally, the case of Claudio Magris's Danubio and of its English-language
translation provides evidence of the complex network of literary references which marks the
reception of a text in different cultures, and of the way in which generic affiliation can both
promote the recognition of a 'marginal' text and constrain its more idiosyncratic (and
original) characteristics
