"Martyrs" de Pascal Laugier: Mélancolie du chaos
No full textInternational audienceRésumé de l'éditeur : Sorti en 2008, Martyrs est un film coup de poing, à la violence sèche, une fiction d'horreur « totale » (torture porn, cyberpunk, rape and revenge, film de fantôme...) qui, après une campagne virulente menée par des détracteurs, a failli être interdit aux moins de 18 ans. Le temps a fait son office, et le long métrage de Pascal Laugier est désormais considéré comme un joyau noir de la production de genre française. Frédéric Astruc dégage ce qui fait la force de Martyrs, entre héritages visibles et enjeux inédits. Écrin mortuaire abritant un chaos de scènes archaïques qui révèlent notre monde à la manière d'un rayon de ténèbres, cauchemar sans fin et sans issue qui horrifie autant qu'il fascine, le film livre une expérience rare, très physique, semblable à un trip ou un shoot mais sans contrepartie toxique. Si les images sont « obsédées » par certaines images d'archives, jouent avec les représentations biaisées d'une société bien-pensante et néolibérale, elles portent surtout en elles une puissance transgressive, jamais complaisante, qui plonge le spectateur dans un inconfort essentiel. Aux analyses, Frédéric Astruc adjoint un long entretien réalisé avec Pascal Laugier qui revient sur l'élaboration à part qu'a constituée Martyrs, qui raconte comment il est parvenu à aller au bout de son propos, aussi radical soit-il. Le film apparaît ainsi comme la pierre angulaire du travail du cinéaste, l'expérience matricielle à partir de laquelle tout se déploie
Samuel Beckett and the Writers of Port-Royal
No full textIt has been observed that ‘the literary influences on Beckett have been far more important than has been acknowledged, and more important indeed, than the philosophical influences’ (Smith 2002: 3). The truth of this statement is evidenced by the description that scholars have given of Samuel Beckett’s relationship to seventeenth century French classicism. To date, critical interest has been limited for the most part to the figure of the philosopher René Descartes on the (fragile) grounds that Beckett was exclusively concerned with the Cartesian imperative of clarity and order, the fundamental dualism between body and mind, and Nominalism.
Together with the assumption that Beckett’s vision was essentially Cartesian, his literary filiation with Pascal was suggested by critics, but only in terms of Beckett’s formal approach to the theatre. In his short article on En attendant Godot in 1953, the playwright Jean Anouilh was among the first reviewers to suggest that Beckett’s drama synthesizes the encounter between ‘classicism’ and a ‘modern’ form of art. It is well known that Beckett retained a lifelong admiration for Pascal – indeed, Pascal was one of his ‘old chestnuts’ (Knowlson 1997: 653). Little attention has been paid, however, to the originality of Pascal’s thought, the specific nature of his prose, and the impact these might have had upon Beckett’s mature work, especially the trilogy and the subsequent short prose. Yet, in the literary and philosophical context of post-war France, Beckett’s filiation with Pascal, their corresponding preoccupations, were evident to his contemporaries, who identified Pascal as an underlying presence in his works
Quantitative Ultrasound of Cortical Bone in the Femoral Neck Predicts Femur Strength: Results of a Pilot Study
No full textArticle first published online: 15 JAN 2013 Pour consulter la version éditeur DOI: 10.1002/jbmr.1742A significant risk of femoral neck (FN) fracture exists for men and women with an areal bone mineral density (aBMD) higher than the osteoporotic range, as measured with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Separately measuring the cortical and trabecular FN compartments and combining the results would likely be a critical aspect of enhancing the diagnostic capabilities of a new technique. Because the cortical shell determines a large part of FN strength a novel quantitative ultrasound (QUS) technique that probes the FN cortical compartment was implemented, aimed at testing the sensitivity of the method to variations of FN cortical properties and FN strength. Nine femurs (women, mean age 83 years) were subjected to QUS to measure the through transmission time-of-flight (TOF) at the FN and mechanical tests to assess strength. Quantitative computed tomography (QCT) scans were performed to enable analysis of the dependence of TOF on bone parameters. DXA was also performed for reference. An ultrasound wave propagating circumferentially in the cortical shell, which TOF was not influenced by the properties of the trabecular compartment Q3, was measured in all specimens. Averaged TOF for nine FN measurement positions/orientations was significantly correlated to strength (R² = 0.79) and FN cortical QCT variables: total BMD (R² = 0.54); regional BMD in the inferoanterior (R² = 0.90) and superoanterior (R² = 0.57) quadrants; and moment of inertia (R² = 0.71). The results of this study demonstrate that QUS can perform a targeted measurement of the FN cortical compartment. Because the method involves mechanical guided waves, the QUS variable is related to the geometric and material properties of the cortical shell (cortical thickness, tissue elasticity, and porosity). This work opens the way to a multimodal QUS assessment of the proximal femur, combining our approach targeting the cortical shell with the existing modality sensitive to the trabecular compartment. Aude is a research assistant in the lab of Re ' gis Giet at University of Rennes, France, who is particularly interested in developmental biology. She has always been struck by the fact that a whole organism displaying multiple functions arises from a single cell. For this reason, she has oriented her research on mitosis and meiosis to study the different steps, components and structures involved in these processes

No full textThere exists a limited number of tutorials for the Pascal programming language using the Apple Computer. The demand for these tutorials exceeds the supply. In this thesis an attempt was made to rectify this shortage by designing a Pascal tutorial for the Apple computer. This Pascal tutorial is designed to assist with instructing an introductory computer programming course in Pascal, incorporating Apple Superpilot as the authoring language. Emphasis is placed on making the program "user friendly." A person with no previous programming experience should be able to easily execute this tutorial. The information presented as the subject matter of the tutorial will follow the guidelines recommended by the Association for Computing Machinery
