    Orthogeodesic Point-Set Embedding of Trees

    No full text
Let S be a set of N grid points in the plane, and let G a graph with n vertices (n ≤ N ). An orthogeodesic point-set embedding of G on S is a drawing of G such that each vertex is drawn as a point of S and each edge is an orthogonal chain with bends on grid points whose length is equal to the Manhattan distance. We study the following problem. Given a family of trees F what is the minimum value f (n) such that every n-vertex tree in F admits an orthogeodesic point-set embedding on every grid-point set of size f (n)? We provide polynomial upper bounds on f (n) for both planar and non-planar orthogeodesic point-set embeddings as well as for the case when edges are required to be L-shaped chains

    Thrackles: An Improved Upper Bound.

    No full text
A thrackle is a graph drawn in the plane so that every pair of its edges meet exactly once: either at a common end vertex or in a proper crossing. We prove that any thrackle of n vertices has at most 1.3984n edges. Quasi-thrackles are defined similarly, except that every pair of edges that do not share a vertex are allowed to cross an odd number of times. It is also shown that the maximum number of edges of a quasi-thrackle on n vertices is 3/2(n−1), and that this bound is best possible for infinitely many values of n

Let C={C1,...,Cn} denote a collection of translates of a regular convex k-gon in the plane with the stacking order. The collection C forms a visibility clique if for everyi < j the intersection Ci and (Ci ∩ Cj)\⋃i<l<jCl =∅.elements that are stacked between them, i.e., We show that if C forms a visibility clique its size is bounded from above by O(k4) thereby improving the upper bound of 22k from the aforementioned paper. We also obtain an upper bound of 22(k/2)+2 on the size of a visibility clique for homothetes of a convex (not necessarily regular) k-gon

By a polygonization of a finite point set S in the plane we understand a simple polygon having S as the set of its vertices. Let B and R be sets of blue and red points, respectively, in the plane such that is in general position, and the convex hull of B contains k interior blue points and l interior red points. Hurtado et al. found sufficient conditions for the existence of a blue polygonization that encloses all red points. We consider the dual question of the existence of a blue polygonization that excludes all red points R. We show that there is a minimal number K = K(l), which is bounded from above by a polynomial in l, such that one can always find a blue polygonization excluding all red points, whenever k a parts per thousand yen K. Some other related problems are also considered.DCGNational Licence

A general position map f:KMf:K\to M of a kk-dimensional simplicial complex to a 2k2k-dimensional manifold (for k=1k=1, of a graph to a surface) is a Z2\mathbb Z_2-embedding if fσfτ|f\sigma \cap f\tau| is even for any non-adjacent kk-faces σ,τ\sigma,\tau. We present criteria for Z2\mathbb Z_2-embeddability of certain kk-dimensional complex (for k=1k=1, of any graph) to 2k2k-dimensional manifolds. These criteria are \bullet a `Kuratowski-type' version of the Fulek-Kyn\v{c}l-Bikeev criteria (for k=1k=1), and \bullet a converse to the Dzhenzher-Skopenkov necessary condition (for k>1k>1). Our higher-dimensional criterion allows us to reduce the modulo 2 K\"uhnel problem on embeddings to a purely algebraic problem. Our proof is interplay between geometric topology, combinatorics and linear algebra.Comment: 16 pages, 1 figure; Theorems 1.2 and 1.4 added, exposition improve

The link between sleep bruxism and oxidative stress based on a polysomnographic study

    No full text
Abstract Oxidative stress is proven to increase cardiovascular risk and to diminish healthy life expectancy. Sleep bruxism (SB) is a prevalent masticatory muscle activity during sleep characterized by heterogeneous etiology and inadequately recognized pathophysiology. Recent theories have proposed a potential association between SB and oxidative stress. The aim of the research was to compare the antioxidant status between individuals with SB in contrast to those without SB. A total of 80 adults participated in a full-night polysomnography, assessed according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) standards. Blood samples were subsequently drawn via venipuncture for analysis. Participants were stratified into two groups based on their bruxism episode index (BEI). Using successive receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, optimal cut-off values were identified, enabling the detection of correlations with moderate (BEI > 2) and severe (BEI > 4) sleep bruxism. In the investigated group of patients we observed the relationship between bruxism and the examined parameters: total antioxidant status (TAS), advanced protein products (AOPP) and thiobarbituric acid-reacting substances (TBARS). Low TAS (≤ 0.14 mM and ≤ 0. 16 mM), high AOPP (≥ 82.44 µmol/l) and high TBARS (≥ 723.03 µmol/l and ≥ 1585.45 µmol/l) serum levels result in significantly higher sleep bruxism parameters. Sleep bruxism is related to oxidative stress markers. Elevated markers of lipid and protein peroxidation may be associated with endovascular damage and cardiovascular risk in sleep bruxers, but further research is needed in this topic

Jet-like correlations with direct-photon and neutral-pion triggers at sNN=200 GeV

    No full text
AbstractAzimuthal correlations of charged hadrons with direct-photon (γdir) and neutral-pion (π0) trigger particles are analyzed in central Au+Au and minimum-bias p+p collisions at sNN=200 GeV in the STAR experiment. The charged-hadron per-trigger yields at mid-rapidity from central Au+Au collisions are compared with p+p collisions to quantify the suppression in Au+Au collisions. The suppression of the away-side associated-particle yields per γdir trigger is independent of the transverse momentum of the trigger particle (pTtrig), whereas the suppression is smaller at low transverse momentum of the associated charged hadrons (pTassoc). Within uncertainty, similar levels of suppression are observed for γdir and π0 triggers as a function of zT (≡pTassoc/pTtrig). The results are compared with energy-loss-inspired theoretical model predictions. Our studies support previous conclusions that the lost energy reappears predominantly at low transverse momentum, regardless of the trigger energy

Model of Public Accountability for Public Debt Reduction in Public Interest

    No full text
In the financial context of public interest, the attention should be paid to the public debt, especially in the intergenerational perspective of justice. Thus, the aim of the paper is to present the theoretical, multidimensional model of accountability for public debt that will serve in public interest. The research question is what is the nature of conditions necessary to the effective limitation of public debt. According to the research hypothesis, these conditions are of varied nature, they are not limited to the legal dimension of legal responsibility but they have the basis in the public accountability. To achieve the scientific aim of the research and to search for the evidence to support the study’s hypothesis the literature review was made, consisting in the analysis of the existing literature presenting the theoretical and empirical results of the previous research. We conclude that to effectively reduce public debt, the multidimensional model of public debt should be developed, consisting of four components i.e.: the legal responsibility, the democratic accountability, the moral accountability, the financial accountability. Having the knowledge on the particular components of the proposed model it would be possible in future research to analyze the components of the politicians’ motivation to issue the regulations in accordance with universally binding moral rules serving the public interest and not their own interests (the legal motivation)[email protected] of Law, Department of Public Finances and Financial Law, Faculty of Law, University of Bialystok, Poland.
