No full textEl poeta Francisco Botelho de Moraes e Vasconcelos encarna con su vida y obra el ideal de hombre de letras ibérico que, a caballo entre los siglos XVII y XVIII, vivió entre Torre de Moncorvo, Madrid, Coímbra, Barcelona, Lisboa y Salamanca, recorrió tierras de Francia e Italia y publicó versos y prosa en castellano, portugués y también en latín. Leer a Fracisco Botelho de Moraes e Vasconcelos como autor ibérico es, pues, un buen arranque para interpretar sus textos. Es tarea de los estudios ibéricos bucear en las diferentes construcciones lingüísticas y culturales de la península ibérica. Y es más productivo interpretar que las actuales unidades lingüísticas y culturales se conformaron históricamente de forma conjunta y gracias a una tupida red de relaciones, influencias, superposiciones e imposiciones de ida y vuelta. Es decir, cada unidad lingüística y cultural de la península ibérica actual no se constituyó de forma independiente. La interrelación cultural ibérica, tanto en forma de acto como de potencia (pasada, presente y futura), ha sido la regla, no la excepción. Os Maias do século XIX num filme do século XXI: recriação cinematográfica de João Botelho
No full textJoão Botelho is a Portuguese filmmaker whose filmography includes prominent filmic productions which celebrate an interpretive reunion with key authors of the Portuguese literature. Thus, it is not surprising that his latest cinematic creation is precisely a literary adaptation of the novel Os Maias by Eça de Queiroz. In this sense, this essay focuses on the analysis of the cinematic transmutation proposed by João Botelho (OS MAIAS, 2014) highlighting the canonical novel’s contemporaneousness, its cinematographic qualities and the artificial and operatic-theatrical character of this literary adaptation. The paper also emphasizes the encounter with the novel; its reinterpretation and appropriation in a gesture of respect for its author and for the novel and simultaneously underlines a purpose of artistic and authorial emancipation where the artificiality plays an important role.Sendo João Botelho um cineasta cuja constelação fílmica celebra um reencontro interpretativo com autores fundamentais da literatura portuguesa, não surpreende que a sua mais recente incursão cinéfila seja justamente pelo universo queirosiano com a adaptação para cinema do romance Os Maias. Strategic behavior at trial-The production, reporting, and evaluation of complex evidence
No full textRecent game-theoretic analyses of the adversarial process have focused on the hability of courts to render accurate verdicts in light of selectivity reported evidence. This paper generalizes previous work by developing a game where the court´s decision to weigh evidence and litigants' information-gathering and reporting strategies are endogenously determined, and examines the effects on the players' equilibrium strategies of varying the informational endowments of the litigants concerning the true value of the parameter under dispute. We find that litigants' strategies are driven by their knowledge of the court's potential behavior and prior beliefs, which are non-neutral with respect to trial results.adversarial process, information provision, weighing of evidence

No full textTesis inédita de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Facultad de Filología, Departamento de Filología Española II (Literatura Española), leída el 15/01/2016This doctoral thesis entitled “Miguel Botelho de Calvalho‟s Poetry. Study and edition of Fábula de Píramo y Tisbe (1621) and Rimas Varias (1646)” is born to approach Miguel Botelho de Carvalho‟s (1595-?) life and works. He was a Portuguese poet that lived during the Spanish monarchy reign (1580-1668) and is inexorably referred to in the works of Portuguese poets who wrote in Spanish during the 17th century. The works by this author of which we are certain were written from 1621 to 1646 – namely: an epyllion about the love affairs between Píramo and Tisbe (Fábula de Píramo y Tisbe, Madrid, 1621), a pastoral novel (Prosas y versos del pastor de Clenarda, Madrid 1621), as well as the works printed after his travel to India. This last period includes his narrative poem divided into six cantos, La Filis (1641) and another publication containing two works: a poetic anthology entitled Rimas varias and his approach to drama in Tragicomedia del martir d’Ethiopía (Ruán, 1646). Botelho de Carvalho is constantly being referred to among the critics, above all in general studies about that period. Few of them have delved into the author, nonetheless. TIM23-mediated insertion of transmembrane alpha-helices into the mitochondrial inner membrane
No full textWhile overall hydrophobicity is generally recognized as the main characteristic of transmembrane (TM) alpha-helices, the only membrane system for which there are detailed quantitative data on how different amino acids contribute to the overall efficiency of membrane insertion is the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) of eukaryotic cells. Here, we provide comparable data for TIM23-mediated membrane protein insertion into the inner mitochondrial membrane of yeast cells. We find that hydrophobicity and the location of polar and aromatic residues are strong determinants of membrane insertion. These results parallel what has been found previously for the ER. However, we see striking differences between the effects elicited by charged residues flanking the TM segments when comparing the mitochondrial inner membrane and the ER, pointing to an unanticipated difference between the two insertion systems.
