Anthony Storr and his vision of creative illness

    No full text
Author of the article presents the phenomenon of "creative illness" through the prism of the views of the British psychiatrist Anthony Storr. The central issue of this article is the close relationship between genius and mental illness. The experience of "creative illness" (deep mental crisis, "dark night of the soul") was characteristic of many mystics, religious sect leaders and visionaries who created original philosophical and psychological concepts and made discoveries in the field of exact sciences. The author pays special attention to the crises of Freud and Jung, thanks to which visionaries created ideas that changed our perception of man and his culture. Anthony Storr treats them not so much as scientists, but as inspirational gurusUniwersytet w Białymstoku, Instytut Studiów Kulturowych, Zakład Antropologii KulturyBakan, Joel (2013), Dzieciństwo w oblężeniu. Helena Modrzejewska - baśniopisarką

    No full text
This article presents an unknown fairy-tale, written by the great actress of two continents, called Titi, Nunu i Klembolo, czyli przygody dwóch liliowych chłopczyków i psa o sześciu nogach (Titi, Nunu and Klembolo, or adventures of two lily boys and a dog with six legs). This fairy-tale was written for her grandson Feliks in 1896. The manuscript, which was thought to have been lost 100 years earlier, was found and published for the first time in Poland in the year 2002. The author of the article discusses the fairy-tale, focusing her attention both on the plot and its morals and on the graphic design of the book, which includes photocopies of beautiful illustrations and Art Nouveau vignettes produced by Helena Modrzejewska herself. Zofia Adamczykowa analyses and interprets the fairy-tale according to the poetics of the genre, as well as to the history of literature, comparing it to a fairy-tale by Maria Konopnicka which was published exactly when Modrzejewska’s story about the lily boys was created. Adamczykowa proves that although the text in question can be considered an example of the 19th-century explicit didacticism, yet, it is clearly influenced by modernist techniques of description

Transverse-momentum and collision-energy dependence of high-pT hadron suppression in Au+Au collisions at ultrarelativistic energies

    No full text
We report high statistics measurements of inclusive charged hadron production in Au+Au and p+p collisions at sqrt[sNN]=200 GeV. A large, approximately constant hadron suppression is observed in central Au+Au collisions for 5<pT<12 GeV/c. The collision energy dependence of the yields and the centrality and pT dependence of the suppression provide stringent constraints on theoretical models of suppression. Models incorporating initial-state gluon saturation or partonic energy loss in dense matter are largely consistent with observations. We observe no evidence of pT-dependent suppression, which may be expected from models incorporating jet attenuation in cold nuclear matter or scattering of fragmentation hadrons.Alle Autoren: J. Observation of D0D^0 meson nuclear modifications in Au+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{_{\mathrm{NN}}}} = 200 GeV

    No full text
7 pages including author list, 4 figures ; see paper for full list of authorsWe report the first measurement of charmed-hadron (D0D^0) production via the hadronic decay channel (D0K+π+D^0\rightarrow K^- + \pi^+) in Au+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{_{\mathrm{NN}}}} = 200\,GeV with the STAR experiment. The charm production cross-section per nucleon-nucleon collision at mid-rapidity scales with the number of binary collisions, NbinN_{bin}, from pp+pp to central Au+Au collisions. The D0D^0 meson yields in central Au+Au collisions are strongly suppressed compared to those in pp+pp scaled by NbinN_{bin}, for transverse momenta p_{T}>3 GeV/cc, demonstrating significant energy loss of charm quarks in the hot and dense medium. An enhancement at intermediate pTp_{T} is also observed. Model calculations including strong charm-medium interactions and coalescence hadronization describe our measurements

Jet-like correlations with direct-photon and neutral-pion triggers at sNN=200 GeV

    No full text
AbstractAzimuthal correlations of charged hadrons with direct-photon (γdir) and neutral-pion (π0) trigger particles are analyzed in central Au+Au and minimum-bias p+p collisions at sNN=200 GeV in the STAR experiment. The charged-hadron per-trigger yields at mid-rapidity from central Au+Au collisions are compared with p+p collisions to quantify the suppression in Au+Au collisions. The suppression of the away-side associated-particle yields per γdir trigger is independent of the transverse momentum of the trigger particle (pTtrig), whereas the suppression is smaller at low transverse momentum of the associated charged hadrons (pTassoc). Within uncertainty, similar levels of suppression are observed for γdir and π0 triggers as a function of zT (≡pTassoc/pTtrig). The results are compared with energy-loss-inspired theoretical model predictions. Our studies support previous conclusions that the lost energy reappears predominantly at low transverse momentum, regardless of the trigger energy

BTeV : an experiment to measure mixing, CP violation, and rare decays of beauty and charm at the Fermilab collider.

    No full text
We discuss the physics goals and rationale for a detector to study Beauty and Charm decays in the forward direction at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We then describe the BTeV detector which has been designed to achieve these goals and present its physics reach based on extensive simulation. We conclude by comparing BTeV to other experiments designed to explore similar topics

Dielectron Mass Spectra From Au+au Collisions At Snn =200 Gev

    No full text
We report the STAR measurements of dielectron (e+e-) production at midrapidity (|yee|<1) in Au+Au collisions at sNN=200GeV. The measurements are evaluated in different invariant mass regions with a focus on 0.30-0.76 (ρ-like), 0.76-0.80 (ω-like), and 0.98-1.05 (φ-like) GeV/c2. The spectrum in the ω-like and φ-like regions can be well described by the hadronic cocktail simulation. In the ρ-like region, however, the vacuum ρ spectral function cannot describe the shape of the dielectron excess. In this range, an enhancement of 1.77±0.11(stat)±0.24(syst)±0. 33(cocktail) is determined with respect to the hadronic cocktail simulation that excludes the ρ meson. The excess yield in the ρ-like region increases with the number of collision participants faster than the ω and φ yields. Theoretical models with broadened ρ contributions through interactions with constituents in the hot QCD medium provide a consistent description of the dilepton mass spectra for the measurement presented here and the earlier data at the Super Proton Synchrotron energies. © 2014 American Physical Society.1132DOE; National Science Foundation; NSF; National Science Foundation; NSFC; National Science FoundationAdams, J., Aggarwal, M.M., Ahammed, Z., Amonett, J., Anderson, B.D., Arkhipkin, D., Averichev, G.S., Hallman, T.J., Experimental and theoretical challenges in the search for the quark-gluon plasma: The STAR Collaboration's critical assessment of the evidence from RHIC collisions (2005) Nuclear Physics A, 757 (1-2 SPEC.
