    A two-parameter wind speed algorithm for Ku-band altimeters

    Globally distributed crossovers of altimeter and scatterometer observations clearly demonstrate that ocean altimeter backscatter correlates with both the near-surface wind speed and the sea state. Satellite data from TOPEX/Poseidon and NSCAT are used to develop an empirical altimeter wind speed model that attenuates the sea-state signature and improves upon the present operational altimeter wind model. The inversion is defined using a multilayer perceptron neural network with altimeter-derived backscatter and significant wave height as inputs. Comparisons between this new model and past single input routines indicates that the rms wind error is reduced by 10%–15% in tandem with the lowering of wind error residuals dependent on the sea state. Both model intercomparison and validation of the new routine are detailed, including the use of large independent data compilations that include the SeaWinds and ERS scatterometers, ECMWF wind fields, and buoy measurements. The model provides consistent improvement against these varied sources with a wind-independent bias below 0.3 m s?1. The continuous form of the defined function, along with the global data used in its derivation, suggest an algorithm suitable for operational application to Ku-band altimeters. Further model improvement through wave height inclusion is limited due to an inherent multivaluedness between any single realization of the altimeter measurement pair [?o, HS] and observed near-surface winds. This ambiguity indicates that HS is a limited proxy for variable gravity wave properties that impact upon altimeter backscatter

    Entre los fitónimos de las tablillas micénicas hallamos ku-pa-ro/ku-pa-ro 2 y sus ideogramas equivalentes PYC/CYP. Se piensa comúnmente que designa tres especies del género Cyperus, a saber, C. rotundus L. 'juncia redonda', C. longus L. 'juncia de olor, j. larga' y C. esculentus L. 'chufa, juncia avellanada', pero, por diversas causas, creo que C. esculentus debe excluirse. Para los determinantes de los ideogramas propongo: a) *ku-ka-ra-do = K... d.. para KU, y b) *o-pi-ko-ro-jo = *p. .. ./-. para O. Por otra parte, QA y PA podrían respresentar *qa-ru-ta-to/*pa-ru-ta-to, la primera forma con conservación de la labiovelar y ambas equivalentes al ático a. tat . (o -. ).Among the plant names of the Mycenaean tablets we find ku-pa-ro/ku-pa-ro 2 and its equivalent ideograms PYC/CYP. The identification is generally supposed to be three species of the genus Cyperus, namely C. rotundus L, 'nutsedge', C. longus L. 'galingale', and C. esculentus L. 'tiger nut, chufa', but I think, by several reasons, that C. esculentus must be excluded.     En este trabajo se analiza la función que desempeña el oscilador local de frecuencia fija de un sistema de conversión en bloque en una estación terrena receptora de televisión vía satélite operando en banda Ku. También se analizan los efectos de dispersión y discontinuidades presentes en los circuitos de microcinta a estas frecuencias, así como las ventajas que introduce utilizar resonadores dieléctricos como elemento estabilizador de frecuencia en osciladores con dispositivos de estado sólido. Se describe una metodología para el diseño de osciladores utilizando transistores bipolares y/o transistores de efecto de campo metal semiconductor fabricados en arseniuro de galio (GaAs MESFET). La metodología permite diseñar los mencionados osciladores por medio de pequeños programas de computadora con gran rapidez en un intervalo de frecuencia de operación de 2 a 18 GHz. El prototipo que se construyó bajo esta técnica de diseño generó resultados satisfactorios respecto a los requisitos preestablecidos, obteniéndose 11.0 dBm de potencia en 10.8 Gigahertz, con un ruido de fase de-100 dBe @ 100 KHz. La frecuencia de operación mediante sintonización mecánica puede ajustarse en± 5 % y el voltaje de suministro de 8 a 24 Volts de corriente directa

    [ES] En este trabajo se han diseñado, simulado y construido acopladores direccionales compactos en la banda Ku y K utilizando guías de ondas integradas en substrato (Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW)). Utilizando el principio de acoplamiento continuo entre guías de onda adyacentes propuesto por Hildebrand, se ha conseguido desarrollar estructuras compactas. Para obtener el mejor rendimiento del acoplador, se ha realizado un estudio paramétrico de las variables geométricas que controlan su comportamiento. Para la medición de los parámetros de los acopladores, se han estudiado y diseñado transiciones microstip-SIW así como codos en plano H con guía SIW. Las simulaciones y las mediciones experimentales muestran que los acopladores poseen buenas características. El acoplador en banda Ku posee un ancho de banda mayor a 14%, pérdidas de retorno mayores que 21dB y las pérdidas de inserción presentan un rizado menor a ±0.3dB; para el acoplador en banda K se ha medido un ancho de banda de 22% para pérdidas de retorno mayores a 15dB.[EN] In this work, compact hybrids in substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) technology for Ku and K bands have been designed, simulated and built. The continuous coupling between adjacent waveguide concept, proposed by Hildebrand, has been used to achieve compact structure. In order to improve the performance of the couplers, parametric analyses of their physical variables have been performed. Microstrip-SIW transitions and H-plane bends have been studied and designed for measuring the coupler characteristics. Simulations of designed devices show they have excellent characteristics. Simulated and experimental results show good agreement. Bandwidth larger than 14% has been measured in Ku-band coupler with return loss higher than 21 dB and insertion loss ripple smaller than ±0.3 dB. A bandwidth of 22% has been measured for the K-band coupler showing a return loss higher than 15 dB.Carrera Suárez, LF. (2010).     Fungal Ku prevents permanent cell cycle arrest by suppressing DNA damage signaling at telomeres

    This is an Open Access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License.The Ku heterodimer serves in the initial step in repairing DNA double-strand breaks by the non-homologous end-joining pathway. Besides this key function, Ku also plays a role in other cellular processes including telomere maintenance. Inactivation of Ku can lead to DNA repair defects and telomere aberrations. In model organisms where Ku has been studied, inactivation can lead to DNA repair defects and telomere aberrations. In general Ku deficient mutants are viable, but a notable exception to this is human where Ku has been found to be essential. Here we report that similar to the situation in human Ku is required for cell proliferation in the fungus Ustilago maydis. Using conditional strains for Ku expression, we found that cells arrest permanently in G2 phase when Ku expression is turned off. Arrest results from cell cycle checkpoint activation due to persistent signaling via the DNA damage response (DDR). Our results point to the telomeres as the most likely source of the DNA damage signal. Inactivation of the DDR makes the Ku complex dispensable for proliferation in this organism.
