Review of Jacques Rancière, by Davis, O.

This book will be an extremely welcome addition to the shelves of both committed and aspirational scholars of Rancière. Critical interest in his work has, as Oliver Davis notes in his Preface, ‘never been greater’ (p. vii). This thorough, wide ranging text is therefore timely. Davis sets out his contribution as ‘the first book-length study by a single author, in any language, which is devoted entirely to Rancière’s thought and engages with all his major interventions in and across the field of politics, pedagogy, literature and aesthetics’ (p. vii) and characterises himself as an ‘aspiring explainer’, subject to the customary dangers of ‘unbalanced enthusiasm’ in his promotion of Rancière’s work. It is one of the book’s key strengths that the author does not succumb to this but rather balances an appreciative analysis of Rancière’s unique interventions with well supported criticisms of the omissions, possible mis-readings and contradictions in the philosopher’s thinking. The objective of this thesis is to present an analysis of whether Catherine's image has been shaped by the male gaze, how she contends with the three looks of the male gaze - the look of the characters, the look of the reader, and the look of the author - and finally, how the male gaze is broken. The theoretical parameter of this analysis, the concept of the male gaze, is theorized by Laura Mulvey in the article "Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema" (1975) which critiques the relation between the male gaze and the female image within the patriarchal molding of visual pleasure. Borrowing Mulvey's critique of the gendering of visual pleasure in films, which pertains to the context of classical Hollywood cinema, I have articulated her theory in relation to Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights, to examine the dynamics of the male gaze regarding the female character, Catherine. This study also aimed at examing the extent to which Mulvey's theoretical paradigm produced for cinema could be articulated specifically in relation to a literary text written in the nineteenth century

Confirmation Bias and the Open Access Advantage: Some Methodological Suggestions for the Davis Citation Study

: Davis (2008) analyzes citations from 2004-2007 in 11 biomedical journals. For 1,600 of the 11,000 articles (15%), their authors paid the publisher to make them Open Access (OA). The outcome, confirming previous studies (on both paid and unpaid OA), is a significant OA citation Advantage, but a small one (21%, 4% of it correlated with other article variables such as number of authors, references and pages). The author infers that the size of the OA advantage in this biomedical sample has been shrinking annually from 2004-2007, but the data suggest the opposite. In order to draw valid conclusions from these data, the following five further analyses are necessary: (1) The current analysis is based only on author-choice (paid) OA. Free OA self-archiving needs to be taken into account too, for the same journals and years, rather than being counted as non-OA, as in the current analysis. (2) The proportion of OA articles per journal per year needs to be reported and taken into account. (3) Estimates of journal and article quality and citability in the form of the Journal Impact Factor and the relation between the size of the OA Advantage and journal as well as article “citation-bracket” need to be taken into account. (4) The sample-size for the highest-impact, largest-sample journal analyzed, PNAS, is restricted and is excluded from some of the analyses. An analysis of the full PNAS dataset is needed, for the entire 2004-2007 period. (5) The analysis of the interaction between OA and time, 2004-2007, is based on retrospective data from a June 2008 total cumulative citation count. The analysis needs to be redone taking into account the dates of both the cited articles and the citing articles, otherwise article-age effects and any other real-time effects from 2004-2008 are confounded. Davis proposes that an author self-selection bias for providing OA to higher-quality articles (the Quality Bias, QB) is the primary cause of the observed OA Advantage, but this study does not test or show anything at all about the causal role of QB (or of any of the other potential causal factors, such as Accessibility Advantage, AA, Competitive Advantage, CA, Download Advantage, DA, Early Advantage, EA, and Quality Advantage, QA). The author also suggests that paid OA is not worth the cost, per extra citation. This is probably true, but with OA self-archiving, both the OA and the extra citations are free

This paper analyzes the work of the historian Natalie Zemon Davis on the basis of its relationship with anthropology. Taking as axis the concept of culture, the goal is to reflect on the explicit and hidden dialogues that the author establishes with the anthropological literature, showing their changes over time. The paper divides Natalie Davis’ career in three stages: the 1970s, when she published her first book (Society and Culture in Early Modern France) and presented her first approach to anthropology; the 1980s, the time of the publication of The Return of Martin Guerre and Fiction in the Archives, which are clearly influenced by the debates of interpretative anthropology; and finally, the books written from the 1990s on, in which the author formulates a more dynamic analysis of cultural processes.

S tím pak dále souvisí snaha o uchopení fenoménu jazzové osobnosti a v kontextu pak i samozřejmě Milese Davise. The thesis "Structural elements on music of Miles Davis" deals with the transformation of the jazz paradigm, briefly touches several crucial moments in the precipitous life of the aforementioned jazz giant and tries to capture at least a few subjectively important moments in his life. The thesis also defines what jazz music means to its author, in brief also author's basic musical preferences. This relates also to his endeavour to grasp the jazz personality phenomenon and within this context also the personality of Miles Davis. The author tries to understand the uniqueness of Davis' contribution and influence on music in general. In a surprising conclusion the beginning of Davis' jazz-rock period emerges as the most important one. The author sees there a fundamental peak - the transformation of the very essence of jazz interpretation - a change in the approach to jazz song themes as the head of the whole composition. The song theme is replaced by a single motive or a phrase. This leads to a shift of live interpretation possibilities and also the most important shift in the development of the jazz paradigm and method of working with structural elements
