Constructions possessives en tongugbe, un dialecte de l'éwé

    No full text
This dissertation concerns the description of possessive constructions in Tongugbe, one of the many dialects of the Ewe language, which is spoken in south-eastern Ghana, along the Volta River. It presents a detailed description of the constructions; and explores the relationship that exists between clausal possessive constructions and locative and existential constructions. In addition to this, the work presents a first outline grammar of Tongugbe. The grammar presents notably preliminary findings on the duration contrast in tones of Tongugbe and a rich demonstrative paradigm. The possessive constructions can be grouped into attributive, predicative and external possessor constructions. It is shown that the structural configurations of attributive possessive constructions are functionally motivated. It is also demonstrated that structural variations in predicative possessive and external possessor constructions correspond to differences in meaning. Finally, it is argued that, synchronically, clausal possessive constructions and locative and existential constructions are not reducible to a single structure. The view supported here then is that each construction is a form-meaning pair.

computer-assisted historical language comparison: an African linguistics perspective

International audienceThis paper concerns the computational methodologies being adopted within the BANG project, and some preliminary results obtained. With data from Dogon languages, I first of all present data processing techniques being adopted and how these change the formats and nature of the data. I go on to detail some of the softwares and models being adopted and the preliminary results that these output. I conclude by showing various strategies that are being used for results visualization and modeling. The argument is that perfecting these techniques will lead to faster processing of data, so that much more attention can be given to tasks further upstream

Optimizing Cognacy for Automatic Internal Classifcation of Languages: the Critical Role of Segmentation

International audienceThis paper explores methods for automatic cognate detection. Using a publicly available wordlist, it investigates the relationship between data quality and the performance of cognate detection methods. The study employs the LexStat algorithm, available in Lingpy, to assess the performance of partial and full cognate detection on data segmented according to four parsing criteria: no parsing, phonetic parsing, morphological parsing, and morpho-phonotactic parsing. The results indicate that unparsed data is more suitable for full cognate detection, while parsed data performs better in partial cognate detection. In both cases, higher levels of parsing lead to improved cognate detection. However, increased cognate detection does not necessarily result in improved phylogenetic relationships. The findings suggest that, while efforts to enhance cognate detection are important, it is crucial to recognize thresholds where further parsing could negatively affect overall performance, preventing unintended outcomes

Possession in Tɔŋúgbe, a dialect of the Ewe language, and its relationship with location and existence: the data

This project, a Ph.D. project, seeks to account for the range of constructions available for the expression of the notion of possession in the Tɔŋúgbe dialect of the Ewe language. It also seeks to detail the relationships between the possessive constructions and locative and existential constructions of the language variety. A third objective includes presenting a sketch grammar of the dialect. The data that is archived here serve as the principal basis on which the thesis is carried out.

This chapter presents French as it is spoken in Togo. Taking the form of a survey, we first attempt to situate the French language within the Togolese sociolinguistic space. We recall the endogenous (indigenous)-exogenous characterization of the various languages, their geographical spread, and social distribution. We highlight the fact that the French language is an exogenous language; and that it is placed within a rich linguistic ecology. Consequently, functionally, it participates in a multidimensional multilingual arrangement. In this arrangement, two major endogenous languages, Ewe and Kabiye, due to the rather turbulent linguistic history of the country, play major stratal vehicular roles. This has influences not only on the language ideology and policies of the country but also on the linguistic features of the most ubiquitous exogenous language, French. The linguistic influences are observable on all levels of linguistic analysis, with a seeming ongoing process of nativization. The suggestion then is that this should be the right time for full-scale projects to document the grammar of this nativized variety

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
