Pre-registered study of neural markers of unexpected speech: Re-evaluating the PMN, N400 and P600 in Malay.
At this stage, it is unclear whether the neurological correlates of a change in register would be qualitatively different from a change in language, or whether both are effectively indexing a generalized outcome of deviation from expectations.
While older psycholinguistic interpretations of the PMN, N400 and P600 effects tend to characterise these effects as mismatches in phonology, semantics and syntax, respectively, it is possible that all three effects index a general property of unexpectedness during real-time language processing, with the timeline reflecting how readily the language processing system is able to integrate current information with expectations arising from recent context. Hence, an unexpected speech sound may be evident shortly after the sound is heard, while a semantic mismatch necessarily takes longer to process, as more of the word must be processed before its expectedness/ease of integration with prior context becomes evident. For example, some papers show the probability of a word in a given context predicts the N400, whether measured by cloze probability (e.g. Federmeier and Kutas, 1999; Thornhill & Van Petten, 2012; Kwon, Sturt & Liu, 2017) or distributional information (e.g. Michaelov, Coulson & Bergen, 2022); and other papers show that different kinds of semantic violation are detected on different timescales (e.g., N400 for thematic violations vs P600 for taxonomic violations: Savic, Savic & Kovic, 2019). Within this framework, the ERP recorded when switching from one language to another - or from one register to another - likely indexes the probability of encountering particular linguistic content at a particular time.
Languages with discrete registers allow us to investigate the characteristics of expectation-dependent ERP effects (the N400 and P600), by varying the likelihood of particular linguistic content without altering the lexical semantics or the syntax of an utterance. Furthermore, as a switch from the formal register to the informal register is more likely than the obverse in natural linguistic contexts (i.e., ‘slipping’ into the informal), the study allows us to investigate both the type of violation, and the degree

Title: Earnings management during CEO change - A quantitative study of big bath on the Stockholm Stock Exchange Level: Student thesis, final assignment for bachelor’s degree in business administration Year: 2024, May Author: Vanja Bodlund, Wilma Haglund Supervisor: Asif M Huq Key words: Earning management, Big bath, CEO change, Goodwill write-down, Write-downs, Research and development, Intangible assets, Positive accounting theory, IFRS. Purpose: The study investigates whether a company's accounting is changed through earnings manipulation, in the form of a big bath. The purpose is thus to study whether there is any connection between write-down of goodwill, R&D expenses and other intangible assets and CEO change. Method: The study uses a quantitative method where correlation tests and regression analyzes have been used to answer the study's hypotheses. Theoretical approach: The hypotheses are formulated based on the big bath theory, agent theory and positive accounting theory. IFRS regulations contribute to the understanding of accounting regarding write-downs and the incentives companies must influence accounting. Empirical basis: The essay studies companies listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange's Small Cap, Mid Cap and Large Cap between the years 2010-2023. Results and conclusion: The study finds no significant relationship between write-downs and CEO changes. The conclusion is thus that Swedish listed companies do not carry out big baths when changing the managing director. However, the tests have shown significant relationships between the various write-downs and total assets, return on assets and leverage.

An eye-tracking study of inanimate objects
Unlike the animate objects, where participants were consistent in their looking patterns, for inanimates it was difficult to identify both consistent areas of fixations and a consistent order of fixations. Furthermore, in comparison to animate objects, inanimates received significantly shorter total looking time, shorter longest looks and a smaller number of overall fixations. However, as with animates, looking patterns did not systematically differ between the naming and non-naming conditions. These results suggested that animacy, but not labelling, impacts on looking behaviour in this paradigm. In the light of feature-based accounts of semantic memory organization, one could interpret these findings as suggesting that processing of the animate objects is based on the saliency/diagnosticity of their visual features (which is then reflected through participants eye-movements towards those features), whereas processing of the inanimate objects is based more on functional features (which cannot be easily captured by looking behaviour in such a paradigm)
Shared and/or seperate representations of animate/inanimate categories : an ERP study
This paper presents an ERP experiment examining the underlying nature of semantic representation of animate and inanimate objects. Time-locking ERP signatures to the onset of visual stimuli we found topological similarities in animate and inanimate object processing. Moreover when mapping more general to more specific representation (auditory to visual stimuli) we found no difference between animates and inanimates in the N400 amplitude either. This study provides further evidence for the theory of unitary semantic organization, but no support for the feature-based prediction of segregated conceptual organization. Surprisingly, it was also found that the P600 component, which has been thus far mostly related to syntactic processing to be a sensitive index of conceptual processing. The most apparent difference regarding P600 component was found between animate and inanimate matches, whereby animate matches elicited more positive ERP signatures in comparison to inanimate matches
An eye-tracking study of animate objects
This study involved presentation of animate objects under labelling and non-labelling conditions and examination of participants' looking pattern across these conditions. Results revealed a surprisingly consistent way in which adults look at the pictures of animate objects. The head/eyes of the animals were a typical region attracting a number of fixations, but also some other parts of animals (e.g. the tail in cats, or the udder in cows and the body in snakes). Furthermore, not only did participants tend to look at similar regions of the pictures of animate objects, but also the looking order to these regions was consistent across participants. However, contrary to the original predictions, these patterns of fixations were similar across the naming and non-naming conditions ('Look at the !', 'Look at the picture!' and 'What's this?', respectively), which led to the conclusion that participants' consistency in processing animate objects was not reflecting underlying mental representation evoked by labels, but was rather driven by the structural similarity of animate objects, in particular the presence of a head
