    INVESTIGATING THE ATTITUDE OF STUDENTS TOWARDS CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS OF PUNJAB

                    This study investigated the students’ attitudes towards co-curricular activities in public secondary schools. The study used quantitative and descriptive survey research methods. The Public Secondary school students from District Bahawalnagar made up the study’s population. The random sampling method was applied in the study. The 15 schools were for male students and 15 were for female students through the modification of online questionnaires for 421 students in randomly selected public secondary schools in District Bahawalnagar. A self-made questionnaire consists of 15 items was developed and used Google platform for collecting the data online. A pilot study and expert opinion were used to evaluate validity. By using Cronbach's alpha, reliability was examined with the use of a Google form, and data was gathered. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statements and various simple statistical tools such as excel computer software to analyze the frequency, percentage, mean standard deviation, cross-tabulation, t-test, etc. The data were tabulated and analyzed using the SPSS version 22. In short, the study shows evidence that the students ‘gender and locality-wise attitudes is positive towards co-curricular activities in schools. Hence, the planning, implementation and evaluation of the co-curricular programs should be a priority in the education curriculum

    Pediatric functional lung imaging and pulmonary function testing: A scoping review protocol

    Objective: This scoping review aims to identify current and emerging functional lung imaging techniques that have been used in pediatric cohorts and how these techniques have been compared to pulmonary function tests. Introduction: Functional lung imaging enables the assessment of distribution of pulmonary parameters—including ventilation, perfusion, gas exchange, and biomechanics—to be mapped and quantified non-invasively throughout the lungs. In comparison to pulmonary function testing, functional lung imaging can provide additional clinically relevant information on the regional and spatial localization of lung disease. Pulmonary functional imaging has the potential to significantly benefit a pediatric cohort, giving clinicians an additional tool in assessing and managing pediatric lung disease. Inclusion criteria: Functional lung imaging techniques that have been investigated and compared or correlated with a pulmonary function test in pediatric cohorts will be identified and reviewed. Quantitative study designs and functional lung imaging techniques used in reviews and conference abstracts will be included if there is a comparative pulmonary function test. Gray literature will be screened for evidence of new and emerging technologies. Established author opinion will also be sought on new and emerging technologies in pediatric functional lung imaging. Methods: Key sources to be searched include MEDLINE, Embase, and CINAHL. Two reviewers will independently screen titles and abstracts against inclusion criteria. Extracted data will include details about the concept, context, study methods, and key information relevant to the study question. Data will be presented in tabular format, accompanied by a narrative synthesis.     Homoeocerus albiguttulus Stål, 1873 Homoeocerus albiguttulus Stål, 1873: 61 (as new species). Material examined. Sistan & Baluchestan: Iranshahr (538 m), 2 Ƥ, 13, April 2002. New record for Iran. General distribution. Bangladesh, Far East, India, Malaysia, Pakistan, Sumatra (Perveen 1991). Comments. Moreover, one damaged specimen of Homoeocerus sp. was found from Saravan (Sistan & Baluchestan province). On the basis of preliminary identification by the first author and also I.M. Kerzhner, it is probably H. lacertosus Distant 1889 with distribution in India and Pakistan.     Bibliometric analysis of contributions to COVID-19 research in Malaysia

    INTRODUCTION: The advent of COVID-19 has led to an exponential rise in related publications to provide a knowledge driven approach to tame the tide of infection and impact in all spheres. This study gives an insight into COVID-19 research publication pattern in Malaysia using bibliometric analysis. METHOD: COVID-19 publications on Scopus database between January 1, 2020, and August 26, 2022, were extracted using predetermined search strings. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were set, and data was extracted from the database. Descriptive statistics was used to summarize our findings. RESULTS: A total of 3,553 COVID-19 related papers were retrieved out of global count of 392,613 and 16,466 for Southeast Asia (SEA). This implies that 0.9% and 21.6% is contributed globally and SEA respectively. Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore are the three top countries with highest research outputs in the region. This may be correlated to high GDP per capita, research and development, and research and development expenditure. Most of the publications are article/original research (n = 2832, 67%). Ministry of Higher education is the top funding sponsor and Universiti Malaya is the highest contributor and the most cited (n = 466, 4920 citations). The majority of publications are from physical sciences (30.3%), but medicine subcategory produced the highest number of papers (1,586). The top journal was International Journal of Environmental and Public Health (n = 96 publications). Most active collaborating country was the United Kingdom and most active author was from Monash University. CONCLUSION: Malaysian institutions have made profound contributions to COVID-19 research globally and in SEA. However, there is a need for continuous efforts to improve research outputs on the topic

    Isolation and Characterization of a Novel Thraustochytrid-like Microorganism that Efficiently Produces Docosahexaenoic Acid

    A thraustochytrid-like microorganism (strain 12B) was isolated from the mangrove area of Okinawa, Japan. On the basis of its ectoplasmic net structure and biflagellate zoospores we determined strain 12B to be a novel member of the phylum Labyrinthulomycota in the kingdom Protoctista. When grown on glucose/seawater at 28 °C, it had a lipid content of 58% with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 22:6 n−3) at 43% of the total fatty acids. It had a growth rate of 0.38 h(−1). The DHA production rate of 2.8 ± 0.7 gl(−1) day(−1) is the highest value reported for any microorganism

    Electrocatalytic Detection of Acetaminophen by Sodium Ferrite

    Acetaminophen (APN) is a safer alternative to opioids and is recognized for its analgesic and antipyretic properties. Prolonged usage and overdose of APN cause severe health problems for humans. Hence, its monitoring in the human body, pharmaceutical preparations and consumption sources is important. Thus, the current study was designed to synthesize the sodium ferrite nanoparticles (Na2Fe4O7-NPs) based on the Tamarindus indica fruit extract for selective trace electrochemical detection of APN. The Na2Fe4O7-NPs were characterized by advanced analytical techniques such as x-ray diffraction (XRD), fourier transform infrared (FTIR), UV–visible, atomic force microscopy (AFM), zeta potential, zeta sizer, energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) which displayed that the Na2Fe4O7-NPs possess hexagonal structure, a narrow band gap (1.475 eV), corresponding to their excellent electronic capability, nanosize of particles, rough surface and highly stable nature for electrochemical analysis. Na2Fe4O7-NPs were deposited on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to manufacture an electrochemical sensor (Na2Fe4O7-NPs/GCE) and characterized its surface behaviour by cyclic voltammetry. Na2Fe4O7-NPs/GCE voltammetric sensor showed its selective sensing of APN in a wide dynamic range (1.0 × 10-8 to 4.5 × 10-4 M) with a detection limit of 2.72 10-9 M. Further, the developed method showed excellent stability in addition to reproducibility for the sensing of APN (% RSD 5.0). The developed electrochemical sensor was found to be efficient for selective and sensitive detection of APN in real samples with quantitative recoveries (> 90 %). © 2024 The Author(s)King Saud University, KS

    A heterozygous c-Maf transactivation domain mutation causes congenital cataract and enhances target gene activation

    MAF, one of a family of large Maf bZIP transcription factors, is mutated in human developmental ocular disorders that include congenital cataract, microcornea, coloboma and anterior segment dysgenesis. Expressed early in the developing lens vesicle, it is central to regulation of lens crystallin gene expression. We report a semi-dominant mouse c-Maf mutation recovered after ENU mutatgenesis which results in the substitution, D90V, at a highly conserved residue within the N-terminal 35 amino-acid minimal transactivation domain (MTD). Unlike null and loss-of-function c-Maf mutations, which cause severe runting and renal abnormalities, the phenotype caused by the D90V mutation is isolated cataract. In reporter assays, D90V results in increased promoter activation, a situation similar to MTD mutations of NRL that also cause human disease. In contrast to wild-type protein, the c-Maf D90V mutant protein is not inhibited by protein kinase A-dependent pathways. The MTD of large Maf proteins has been shown to interact with the transcriptional co-activator p300 and we demonstrate that c-Maf D90V enhances p300 recruitment in a cell-type dependent manner.     Identification of major and stable QTLs conferring drought tolerance in rice RIL populations

    Rice production in a rain-fed environment during the reproductive period is significantly hindered by drought, which is one of the critical issues limiting yield. Therefore, finding grain yield-related quantitative trait loci (QTL) during the reproductive stage can potentially provide researchers with additional benefits when taken in the context of marker-assisted breeding. CT-9993 and Samba Mashuri were considered to develop recombinant inbred lines (RILs) for tagging QTLs associated with drought tolerance. During the dry and wet experimental conditions, there was a significant difference in the yield and yield-attributing variables. Sixty polymorphic microsatellite markers were utilized to genotype the RILs by employing Inclusive Composite Interval Mapping (ICIM). Especially eight QTLs were identified for four traits viz., plant height, root length, root dry weight and grain yield under stressed and control conditions. QTLs for Root Length (QRL-6-1 and QRL-8-1) were identified on chromosomes 6 and 8 with PVEs of 20.35% and 10.29%, respectively under stressed situation. A QTL, QPH-4-1, was also identified on Chromosome 4 with a PVE of 19.73% for plant height under drought stress. QGY-6-1 was identified on Chromosome 6 with a LOD value of 7.95 and a PVE of 22.14% to grain yield under stress. Throughout the growing seasons, two QTLs, QPH-4-1 and QPH-8-1, were identified for the Plant Height trait, with PVEs of 25.13% and 3.21%, respectively. Three QTLs (QRL-3-1, QRL-6-1, and QRL-11-1) were identified as having the highest PVE and LOD score for root length. Two stable quantitative trait loci for grain yield, (QGY-6-1 and QGY-7-1) were identified. It was flanked by the markers RM19425 and RM19521.
