Picturing Canada: The changing face of children's book illustration in Canada (Lecture)

    No full text
Presented at the 11th annual Sybille Pantazzi Memorial Lecture, Toronto, Canada (October 17, 2017). In the lecture, “Picturing Canada: The Changing Face of Children’s Book Illustration in Canada,” Dr. Gail Edwards and Professor Judith Saltman explore change and continuity in the history of children’s publishing in Canada by looking at the picture books that the publishers have issued, and consider the challenges and rewards of publishing for children in a rapidly evolving global environment, focusing on the ways that image and text in Canadian picture books provide Canadian children with the opportunity to see their everyday lives and communities, and introduce them to ideas about region, about place, about history, about identity and belonging in a diverse, complex country. The first part of the lecture was based on research for Picturing Canada. Individual titles were located and present mini case studies in the evolution of the communications circuit of children's publishing in Canada over the last 150 years. The final section of the lecture was an informal dialogue about the transformation of the children's publishing industry in the last decade in response to changes in the retail book trade, new digital media, increasing globalization based on current individual and joint research. Accompanying the lecture was a PowerPoint presentation that incorporated visual material from the book, Picturing Canada as well as book covers and illustrations from more recent publications. Due to copyright the PowerPoint presentation is not available. The book Picturing Canada is available in the Douglas Library collection. Not peer reviewe

Sybille Krämer, _Symbolic Cognition in Leibniz_ - Translator's Commentary

    No full text
The article offers a brief introduction to the Polish translation of Sybille Krämer’s Symbolische Erkenntnis bei Leibniz (Symbolic Cognition in Leibniz). I situate the author’s argument in the context of both her research into the idea of formalisation and a wider discussion within Leibniz scholarship concerning the status of signs and symbolic representation in the philosophy and logic of the author of The Monadology. Further, I discuss Krämer’s analysis of the notion of expressio (expression). Her perspective allows for a better understanding of the difficulties Leibniz encountered in his discussion with Antoine Arnauld. Subsequently, I argue that her analysis avoids the attribution of strong ontological assumptions to Leibniz’s understanding of expression, contrary to what can be seen in the Polish reception of the philosopher. I conclude with pointing out the importance of Krämer’s research into Leibniz for the later development of the notions of cultural techniques and notational iconicity

Umiejscawiam argumentację autorki w kontekście zarówno jej badań nad ideą formalizacji, jak też w ramach szerszej dyskusji w badaniach nad Leibnizem, dotyczącej statusu znaków i symbolicznej reprezentacji w filozofii i logice autora Monadologii.

    No full text
Belgium is one of the pioneers in collecting non-profit statistics in national accounts. Their feasibility has already been tested, and the Institut des Comptes Nationaux will begin publishing them in 2005. Sybille Mertens presents the history of how these statistics were put together and is an expert on the subject, as this was the basis of her doctoral dissertation in economics. After highlighting the importance of non-profit organizations in Belgium–they represent more than 14% of waged employment–the author explains the main issues and then describes the conditions under which these statistics were set up. She analyzes the reasons behind the choices made concerning their construction. Besides the difficulty of taking into account the diversity of non-profit organizations is that of assuring consistency with national accounts. One of the most interesting aspects of this article is the connection between the methodological design and the findings. These separate statistics allow existing methods to be refined, help government develop economic and social policy, provide a structure for available information and organize the collection of additional information. While not a substitute for statistics on the social economy, this is a first step in that direction

Review: "Die Energiesicherheit Deutschlands und Polens im Kontext der EU" / Sybille Reitz. Leipzig: Leipziger Universitätsverlag, 2017. ISBN: 978-3-96023-071-7

Die Energiesicherheit Deutschlands und Polens im Kontext der EU is the author's published master thesis. The aim of the book is to make a contribution to the ongoing discussion about the European Union's energy security strategy. Sybille Reitz's focus is on the cases of Germany and Poland, which are meant to represent "old" and "new" EU member states (p. 22). The author points out the differences and similarities of both cases and highlights potential solutions to improve energy security. While the analysis focuses on the 2000s and especially the first half of the 2010s, according to Reitz, however, the most significant difference between the Polish and German approaches to energy security results from their respective historical experiences

Complexity Science and Global Change Workshop summary : Smithers, BC, Canada, February 13, 2009

    No full text
"Complex systems science provides an inter-disciplinary framework for understanding and responding to global change phenomena. It seeks to understand the behaviour of whole systems and provides a common language and a suite of analytical tools that improve communication and integration across disciplines. Because it addresses whole-system behaviours that are beyond the scope of reductionist science, it can help to reconcile the culture clash between scientific and non-scientific approaches to understanding our world. In February 2009, the Bulkley Valley Centre for Natural Resources Research & Management (BV Research Centre) and the Natural Resources and Environmental Studies Institute (NRESI) of the University of Northern British Columbia co-hosted a half-day informal public workshop on Complexity Science and Global Change in Smithers, BC. The purpose of the workshop was to stimulate dialogue about complex systems science and how it can be applied to the challenges of maintaining sustainable ecosystems and communities in the face of global change. Presentations and lively discussion sessions focused on the relationships among complexity, diversity and resilience, genetic complexity in tree and salmon populations, restoring functional diversity in tropical forests, self-organisation in legal systems and managing natural resources under uncertainty. This document summarizes the presentations and discussions."Not peer reviewe
