From Helmut Jürgensen’s former students: The game of informatics

    No full text
Personal reflections are given on being students of Helmut Jürgensen. Then, we attempt to address his hypothesis that informatics follows trend-like behaviours through the use of a content analysis of university job advertisements, and then via simulation techniques from the area of quantitative economics

The article presents the figure of Helmut E. Luck, well-known scientist in the world of historians of psychology. Helmut E. Luck also is well-known in Poland, as the author or the scientific editor of several books in the field of history of psychology. In the first part of the article the short presentation of his scientific career and his scientific achievements are demonstrated. The second part comprises the analysis of his opinions in the scope of social psychology. Helmut E. Luck was the one of pioneers in psychology, who paid attention to social positive phenomena or social positive behaviors. In the field of history of psychology, H.E.Luck made the contribution to methodological analysis of psychological ideas in history, preferring the model which underlines connection of psychology with culture and at the same time creates the opportunity to analysis of biographical plots. The article also shows unquestionable and unusually merits of Luck’s in popularization of knowledge about history of psychology. The article presents the figure of Helmut E. Es werden die orthopteroiden Insekten behandelt, welche H. Knipper zwischen dem 7. Januar und dem 10. Dezember 1952 in Ostafrika sammelte. Nomenklatorische Handlungenknipperi Kevan, 1961 (Acrotylus), spec. n.trifasciatus Kevan, 1961 (Acrotylus), spec. n.somalica Kevan, 1961 (Galoptenopsis), spec. n.curvipennis Kevan, 1961 (Homorocoryphus), spec. n.orientalis Kevan, 1961 (Kassongia), spec. n.vittata Kevan, 1961 (Kassongia), spec. n.rufijianus Kevan, 1961 (Parepistaurus), spec. n.lindneri (Kevan, 1955) (Ramulus), comb. n. hitherto Gratidia lindneri Kevan, 1955affinis Kevan, 1961 (Usambilla), spec. n.This paper gives an account of the Orthopteroid insects collected by H. Knipper in East Africa between 7 January and 10 December, 1952. Most of the material is from N. E. Tanganyika, but a few species from the vicinity of Mogadishu (Mogadiscio), Somalia, taken en route for Tanganyika, are also listed. In the case of new species, specimens collected by D. K. McE. Kevan and other persons are included. Two new species of Acridoidea from N. E. Tanganyika not collected by either author are also described. Ecological notes are given for nearly all, biological notes for several species. Including 34 species which cannot be determined beyond genus, 2 species of Phasmida, 3 of Gryllacridoidea, 16 of Tettigonioidea, 13 of Grylloidea, 1 of Tridactyloidea, 4 of Tetrigoidea, 78 of Acridoidea, 2 of Dermapteroida, 23 of Mantodea and 11 of Blattodea are recorded from Tanganyika. Furthermore, 16 species of Acridoidea and one species of Mantodea are recorded from Somalia only, one more species of Acridoidea from Somalia, Kenya and Abyssinia. The following are described by Kevan as new: - Tettigonioidea: Homorocoryphus curvipennis; Acridoidea: Usambilla affinis, Parepistaurus rufijianus, Caloptenopsis somalica, Kassongia orientalis, K. vittata, Acrotylus knipperi, A. trifasciatus, A. t. ab. roseus, Pycnodictya galinieri ab. citrina. In addition, the previously unknown female Orthochtha lindneri Kevan, 1955 is described.Nomenclatural Actsknipperi Kevan, 1961 (Acrotylus), spec. n.trifasciatus Kevan, 1961 (Acrotylus), spec. n.somalica Kevan, 1961 (Galoptenopsis), spec. n.curvipennis Kevan, 1961 (Homorocoryphus), spec. n.orientalis Kevan, 1961 (Kassongia), spec. n.vittata Kevan, 1961 (Kassongia), spec. n.rufijianus Kevan, 1961 (Parepistaurus), spec. n.lindneri (Kevan, 1955) (Ramulus), comb. n. hitherto Gratidia lindneri Kevan, 1955affinis Kevan, 1961 (Usambilla), spec. n

Hydrogen peroxide and central redox theory for aerobic life A tribute to Helmut Sies: Scout, trailblazer, and redox pioneer

AbstractWhen Rafael Radi and I wrote about Helmut Sies for the Redox Pioneer series, I was disappointed that the Editor restricted us to the use of “Pioneer” in the title. My view is that Helmut was always ahead of the pioneers: He was a scout discovering paths for exploration and a trailblazer developing strategies and methods for discovery. I have known him for nearly 40 years and greatly enjoyed his collegiality as well as brilliance in scientific scholarship. He made monumental contributions to 20th century physiological chemistry beginning with his first measurement of H2O2 in rat liver. While continuous H2O2 production is dogma today, the concept of H2O2 production in mammalian tissues was largely buried for half a century. He continued this leadership in research on oxidative stress, GSH, selenium, and singlet oxygen, during the timeframe when physiological chemistry and biochemistry transitioned to contemporary 21st century systems biology. His impact has been extensive in medical and health sciences, especially in nutrition, aging, toxicology and cancer. I briefly summarize my interactions with Helmut, stressing our work together on the redox code, a set of principles to link mitochondrial respiration, bioenergetics, H2O2 metabolism, redox signaling and redox proteomics into central redox theory
