Kitowski I.: The importance of rural parks for the occurrence of the Rook Corvus frugilegus in the eastern part of the Lublin region (E Poland) - ecological and social factors. Ekologia (Bratislava), Vol. 32, No. 3, p. 283-298, 2013. This study deals with the population size and the distribution of breeding colonies of the rook in rural parks in the eastern part of the Lublin region (Eastern Poland). Large parks with a large number of tree species were appropriate sites for larger rookeries. Small, degraded parks, with few species of trees, were used by smaller rookeries, which showed tendencies to disappear more quickly. Small colonies were irrevocably abandoned if disturbed by man, whereas large ones had a very high reoccupation potential, even after a few years. Unfortunately, ownership changes concerning rural parks in Eastern Poland may endanger the rookeries located there

The aim of this paper is to present how Józef Ignacy Kraszewski depicted two opposing sides of the medieval event known as the pagan reaction in his historical novel Masław. Author analyzes the images of the leaders - noble prince Casmir the Restorer, who leads christian knighthood and treacherous usurper, Miecław vel Masław, who stands for the rebellious pagans. The paper is examining the true motives of each leader and his followers and tries to answer the question what - according to Kraszewski's belief presented in analzyed novel - was christianity and what was paganism. The main source for the analysis comes from Masław and other Kraszewski's novels, which also belong to his monumental cycle Dzieje Polski (The History of Poland). Author also tries to demonstrate the source material used by Kraszewski and compare it to Józef Ignacy's final work

The analysis concerned the ecological aspects of 191 aircraft bird strikes at Polish airfields in 2006–2009. Of the identified birds, collisions most often involved swallows and martins, Eurasian kestrels, and gulls. The species with the highest weight involved in bird strikes were the mute swan and the white stork. Bird strikes were more frequent during the landings than during the take-offs. Birds most frequently hit the engines and fuselages of planes. The highest proportion of bird strikes occurred in July and August (41.0%). Those bird strikes during which multiple structural elements were simultaneously hit most often (92.0%) took place in the June– September period.W pracy przedstawiono analizę ekologicznych aspektów 191 kolizji ptaków z samolotami na lotniskach cywilnych w Polsce w latach 2006–2009. Ptaki najczęściej uderzały w silniki i kadłuby samolotów.

This book is dedicated to the life and work of Ignacy Łukasiewicz, Polish pharmacist whose world-renowned achievements include construction of the world’s first oil refinery and invention of the modern kerosene lamp. The authors also portray the history of the Galician oil industry and set it in the context of political, social and technological changes taking place in the 19th-century Central and Eastern Europe. "The work adds substantially to existing scholarship in English. As the author of the only English-language academic monograph devoted to a general history of the Galician oil industry, I can attest that this manuscript adds significant and important information, details, depth of investigation that is not provided in my book or any other book. It therefore makes a novel contribution that will be very valuable to anyone looking for a truly detailed account of Ignacy Łukasiewicz’s contribution within the context of the Galician oil industry in general." Alison Frank Johnson Professor of History and of Germanic Languages and Literatures Harvard University, Center for European Studies "The authors sketch the profiles of two outstanding Poles, pioneers of the oil industry – Ignacy Łukasiewicz, MSc. in Pharmacy, and mining engineer and geologist Witold Zglenicki, called the Polish Nobel (...) This scientific work is an interesting and captivating read. It can be used not only by scientists and students, but also by everyone who is interested in industrial cultural heritage (...)."
