RKI-ITA-2000
RKI-ITA-2000 is a bilingual (Russian-Italian) corpus containing a set of selected textbooks (coursebooks and reference grammar) for teaching/learning Russian as a Foreign Language (RFL = RKI Russkij Kak Inostrannyj), selected from manuals published in Italy since 2000 and specifically addressed to Italian-speaking students.
This corpus is aimed at investigating the way certain metalinguistic notions are treated in the manuals used in the Italian university context (Beaudrie et al. 2021). While acquiring grammatical skills is essential in the process of learning a foreign language, these skills are not always accompanied by adequate metalinguistic awareness, enabling students to develop “the capacity to use knowledge about language” (Bialystok 2001: 124) or “the ability to think about and reflect upon the nature and functions of language” (Kümmerling-Meibauer 1999: 158).
Textbooks were retrieved by investigating (as well as websites, libraries and different online sources), in particular Russian teaching programmes both at university (Bachelor's and Master's degrees), and secondary school for a total of around 40 universities and over 90 schools throughout Italy.
We, therefore, selected the textbooks that would form the initial corpus on the basis of a number of criteria (Tognini-Bonelli 2001): (i) time range (published from 2000 to the present day); (ii) level of language proficiency covered (A1-B2); (iii) type of textbook (particularly courses and grammars, more functional to the scope of our analysis); (iv) non-self-publishing; (v) frequency of use both at university and at school.
Once we had retrieved (also by scanning) the selected set of manuals in pdf format, we transformed them through different OCR programmes, into editable format, in order to be able to extract the constituent elements of text considered useful for our investigations: a) grammatical explanations; b) instructions on how to carry out the exercises.
These constituent elements of text, once extracted and post-edited (either manually or through the help of some AI tool), were then meta-tagged in an exe-xml. spreadsheet (Kilgariff 2013), so to upload them into the Sketch Engine software tool and make them processable by most qualitative and quantitative analysis. The corpus meets the requirements of balance and representativeness (Noseda et al. 2019 ): 7 courses for a total of 15 textbooks (covering levels A1-B2 and published from 2002 and 2022) and 6 grammars for a total of 7 textbooks (covering levels A1-B2 and published from 2004 and 2020). It includes a tagging system that records, for each manual, the following information: title, author(s), year of publication, typology (course or grammar), and level of linguistic competence. Further tags make it possible to distinguish the different constituent elements of the manuals collected in the corpus. The tagging systems allow for both qualitative and quantitative analysis to be conducted from a diachronic perspective as well.
The creation and the study of this corpus falls within the Project of Excellence in Inclusive Humanities (2023-2027) of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature of the University of Verona, and specifically within Work Package 1 (WP 1.8-12), sub-project “Extraction of Metalinguistic Notions from Textbooks for Teaching Russian as a Foreign and Heritage Language”. Its main goal is to contribute to the development of inclusive educational strategies, with a particular focus on heritage students of Russian as a Foreign Language (RFL)

The importance of reading in the student's development as a citizen is the starting point of this dissertation, which proposes a reflection on the issue of reading as a social practice, and criticizes the traditional method of teaching Literature, the one that focus on the study of literary periodization and is developed, in most cases, in requiring the memorization of an enormous amount of "literary" information (characteristics of each school literary, biographical author etc.), insisting on the confrontation between the student and literary works far beyond his reality, and transforming a work of art into a mere object of study. The formation of the reader is essential for the constitution of a citizen who is conscious and participant in the society he lives, and therefore efforts should be made in order to allow the school to actively collude with this task. The problematic of reading and the formation of the reader is worked on this dissertation in the school range, especially in high school. Absorbing the discussions proposed by the Aesthetics of Reception into the teaching of Literature and literary reading in school, I propose considering reading contemporary literary texts in the foreground in order to attract these students to the world of literary reading, stimulating the formation of the reader. To do so, one possibility indicated here, among many others, is the initial work with contemporary Literature, and not from the study of traditional literary periodization. The first goal is to break that often existing barrier between the student who is starting high school and the literary reading as this student realizes that Literature can also bring issues about his everyday life, a language closer to his reality and themes that are of his interest. To reinforce the validity of this proposal, I bring some projects on changing the traditional teaching of Literature that have already been made, and also suggestions for activities involving the issue of formation of the reader. Finally, from my experience as a teacher, I develop two activity opportunities for the 1st year of high school with contemporary literary works in order to illustrate this proposal of Literature introduction from the reading of contemporary works, trying to stimulate the taste for reading towards the formation of the reader
A comparison of treatment adherence in individuals with a first episode of psychosis and inpatients with psychosis
In predicting treatment compliance in individuals with severe mental illness, research has focused on variables such as substance abuse, personality, history of child abuse, and symptomatology, although these relationships have not been investigated in great detail in individuals at the onset of mental illness. To better understand these correlates of treatment compliance, two samples were examined: a sample of 117 individuals presenting with a first episode of psychosis and a more chronic forensic sample of 65 participants recruited from a psychiatric hospital. These samples were investigated for service engagement in terms of violence history, substance abuse, symptom severity, psychopathic traits and history of childhood abuse. Linear regressions performed for the first episode sample revealed that childhood physical abuse was the strongest predictor of poor service engagement, followed by problems with alcohol, a history of physical violence, any history of violence and higher psychopathic traits. Linear regression revealed for the forensic group that a lower level of service engagement was most strongly predicted by a history of childhood abuse and a higher score on the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS). Results are presented in light of the existing literature and clinical implications are discussed.Peer reviewedFinal article publishedCompliancePsychosisTraumaViolence and psychopath
Circular Façade Systems and Construction: Design for Remanufacturing Window Systems
Context The “take-make-dispose” linear model has proven to be highly unsustainable during the past decades. A circular economy has emerged as a model that is restorative by design, and a response towards the high material and energy intensive linear model. However, a transition to a circular built environment implies a radical change in design and construction. Remanufacturing is one of the three product life extension strategies located in the technical cycles from the circular economy. It is an alternative to demolition, and it allows products to be longer in use, with a constant upgrade. However, for products to be remanufactured, they have to be designed according to certain guidelines, and supported by the application of circular business models.Kawneer, an American manufacturer of aluminium architectural systems and products, seeks to optimize façade systems to meet the demand for circular building products. This means that the components of the systems should be designed with product properties such as disassembly, modularity, and flexibility, which allows them to be circular. Different (re)life options, such as reuse, remanufacturing, and refurbishment, should also be taken into account from the early design stages. The RT82HI+ window system is one of the most competent products manufactured by Kawneer. However, the only (re)life option currently available is recycling. Therefore, the product is currently unable to meet the requirements of a circular building product.ObjectiveThe objective of the presented research is to evaluate the performance of the existing façade components of the RT82HI+ window system in a circular economy, and according to such, redesign towards remanufacturing and other product-life extension strategies. This is done, first, through the understanding of the relationship and dependency among the product design, development, and product-life extension, especially remanufacturing. Secondly, through an analysis of the current lifecycle scenarios of the existing components, and identification of their challenges and potentials in a circular economy. And third, through the elaboration of three different circular window systems that react upon the main findings from the analysis.Main FindingsThree different designs are explored. The first one is an optimization of the existing RT 82 HI +, where only the critical aspects are redesigned. The second and third are hybrid variants that combine aluminum with wood polymer composite pro les (WPC). These three designs are assessed under the principles of DfD (Design for Disassembly), DfA (Design for Adaptability), and DfRem (Design for Re- manufacturing). Additionally, different remanufacturing, reuse, and adaptability scenarios are analyses to understand the performance of the window system in a circular economy. On the other hand, four main different types of façade systems and construction are reviewed to understand the type of attachment of the window to the construction. This resulted in a critical point because it could affect the performance of the window in terms of circularity. The results indicated improvements in different aspects. The key one was ease of assembly and disassembly, but also in terms of type of connections, and geometry of product edges. Furthermore, it is discussed how the loop is closed, and the importance of the different stakeholders involved in the façade manufacturing and construction area
In the whole of Brazilian writer Ana Miranda#s fictional narrative, the travel thematic # considered one of the most fertile themes of the western literature of all times # occupies a central space, and can even been seen as the most important structuring axis of Miranda#s works. The aim of the present thesis is to analyze the treatment given to the travel subject in the novels Desmundo, O retrato do rei, Dias & Dias and Amrik, emphasizing that, through the traveling narrators, Oribela, Mariana, Feliciana and Amina, the author promotes a connection between different cultures, genders, ethnics and generations, at the same time that establishes a profitable dialogue with the past in her invariant problematization concerning the limits and crossings between the fictional and the extra-literary narrative discourses that surrounds it, mainly the historical and the biographic ones

The Construct of the Fantastic: Identifying Science Fiction and Fantasy and a Creative Approach to Genre Construction
The initial purpose of this thesis was to provide a definition for the genres fantasy and science fiction, and to understand the ways in which these genres differ. I discovered that it is best to view these genres as “fuzzy sets,” meaning that science fiction and fantasy exist as a spectrum of fundamental elements that are commonly manifested in literary works of either kind. In this thesis, I analyze J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings and Frank Herbert’s Dune as the most successful literary examples of how the fundamental elements of science fiction and fantasy are best utilized. In my study of both science fiction and fantasy, I have come to the conclusion that the combined use of these genres allow for the most productive use of an author’s creativity, including my own in my composition of my novella, The Demon of the Reaps. In this novel, I combine elements of both science fiction and fantasy to illustrate how the unrestricted usage of both these genres allow for a more successful literary product than would exist if an author were concerned about following strict guidelines of either genre
Recruitment crisis? Assessing consideration of a career in law enforcement from the student and police practitioner perspectives
This study was designed to empirically assess the existence of a proposed recent "recruitment crisis" in law enforcement at the local level. Recently, police executives have posited that young individuals are less interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement due to decreased police legitimacy, labor market competitiveness, and generational preferences that no longer align with police organizational models (Police Executive Research Forum, 2019). Multiple methodologies were utilized by the author to analyze this issue. Application counts from two local police departments were obtained in order to identify trends in the number of applications they have received for open positions in recent years. Police recruiters were asked about recruitment challenges, perceived decreased interest in policing among eligible applicants, and recruitment strategies currently utilized by their agency. Additionally, undergraduate students from a Criminology department were surveyed to identify factors that influence their decision to pursue a career in law enforcement. Findings revealed that the two local agencies that shared their application data did not experience a significant observed decreased in the number of applications they received for open positions in recent years. Police recruiters did note that they have had to make substantial changes to their recruitment strategies to accommodate for generational changes in applicants. The author also found that, although undergraduate students shared concerns regarding pay, ability to pass physical exams, and job commodity, most indicated being interested in a career in law enforcement. Students who indicated no interest in the profession attributed this to a different career choice, dangers of police work, and/or media coverage of law enforcement
