Explicit Runge-Kutta time-stepping with the discontinuous Galerkin method

    No full text
In this thesis, the discontinuous Galerkin method is used to solve the hyperbolic equations. The DG method discretizes a system into a semi-discrete system and a system of ODEs is obtained. To solve this system of ODEs efficiently, numerous time-stepping techniques can be used. The most popular choice is Runge-Kutta methods. Classical Runge-Kutta methods need a lot of space in the computer memory to store the required information. The 2N-storage time-steppers store the values in two registers, where N is the dimension of the system. The 2N-storage schemes have more stages than classical RK schemes but are more efficient than classical RK schemes. Several 2N-storage time-stepping techniques have been used reported in the literature. The linear stability condition is found using the eigenvalue analysis of DG method and spectrum of DG method has been scaled to fit inside the absolute stability regions of 2N-storage schemes. The one-dimensional advection equation has been solved using RK-DG pairings. It is shown that these high-order 2N-storage RK schemes are a good choice for use with the DG method to improve efficiency and accuracy over classical RK schemes

Khalida Hussain has a distinct identity among modern fiction writers. In-depth observation and analytical and philosophical thinking have created a unique color in his stories. His stories interpret internal qualities and external realities. Detachment from life, alienation from people, isolation of individual, psychological disturbance, problem of identity, precociousness and mysticism prevail in his fictions. He has tried to capture the qualities that emerge from the contrast between the outer and the inner of the individual.

An exploratory investigation into human resource practices and employee retention outcome in the Malaysian ICT industry

Author name as given on title page: Parveen Kaur Sukhdarshan SinghThis thesis explores the human resource practices and employee turnover problem in several local and international ICT companies in Malaysia. Human resource practices are used as an intervention to investigate the turnover problem because various strategic human resource management (strategic HRM) and IT/ICT employee management studies advocate that companies should invest in employee-friendly and advanced human resource practices that are beneficial for their employees, because employees’ positive responses will benefit the employers eventually, for example, by lowering the companies’ turnover rates. However, by adopting the constructivist paradigm, qualitative research methodology and constructivist grounded theory approach along with interviews with senior managers, Human Resource Managers and ICT employees, this thesis finds that the impact of human resource practices on employees and employers is not as straightforward as what has been claimed in the studies. This thesis discovers three types of human resource practices, i.e. Paternalistic, Formal and Informal, which affect employees and employers in four different ways ranging from mutually benefitting both parties to not benefitting both parties. In addition to the three types of human resource practices, this thesis also discovers four types of employee outcomes and two types of employer outcomes, which when compiled together, provides an in-depth understanding of what is happening in the Malaysian ICT industry in relation to adoption of human resource practices and employee retention outcomes

In 1958 when first Martial Law was imposed, writers started using symbolism in Punjabi fictions to highlight social and political issues for the expressions of their emotions.  Nazar Fatima “Pat Jharr” expresses dreams of migrated people of eastern Pakistan.  Riffat has revealed a story of love and faithfulness through her fiction by using tree as a symbols in “Jantri”.  In another fiction “Chunni” Riffat used dreams as a symbol for a symbol of modesty in Eastern culture.  In “Jugg” Riffat has used word Allah Wali as a symbol for a transgender.  Khalida Malik and Naila Sadaf have highlighted the issues of women in eastern society by using different symbols.  Parveen Malik has showed tense political conditions through symbols after the hangingof a political leader in her “Chup Da Pehra” and “Ratti Na Rola”.  In “Aapy Kary Nian” she exposed the unjust behavior with poor Muslim countries through symbols.  Afzal Toseef, Farkhanda Lodhi and Azra Waqar also criticized political conditions of that time through symbols.  Parveen Malik and Farkhanda Lodhi also displayed miserable conditions of Indo-Pak partition.  Zoya Sajid used symbols to highlight issues of an individual.  Thus the writers unveiled social, political and individual issues by using symbolism

Population Size and Growth in Pakistan Based on Early Reports of 1972 Census

    No full text
Census reports are the primary source of information on population chara¬cteristics. Fundamental among these characteristics are population size and growth, but census reports are often used to evaluate other features of a popu¬lation such as reliability of age reporting, extent of literacy, adequacy of occupational reporting, and level and pattern of unemployment. In this paper, we take a preliminary look at the 1972 Census of Pakistan in order to deter¬mine its overall suitability as a source of information on population of the country. The quality of census data depends not only on the technical capacity of the statistical arm of the government, but on the characteristics of the society as well. For example, even the advanced statistical and survey technology available in the United States is inadequate to deal with the more volatile nature of society. Near completeness of coverage is achieved only in a few countries such as Holland, Denmark and Switzerland, with high degrees of social cohesion1 and where population censuses are kept in close administrative check

Real-time air quality measurements using mobile platforms

Air pollution poses a serious threat to our health and quality of life. Measuring pollution in the air we breathe and sharing the results with our peers is an important step in increasing social awareness for creating a clean environment. Usually, pollution measurements are conducted using expensive monitors at fixed locations. These measurements fail to provide accurate real-time pollution information in most of the highly polluted roads. It is desirable to have access to real time fine-grained measurements to be able to quickly analyze and identify alarming levels of pollutants. Pervasiveness of smart phones with internet connectivity and increased availability of personal air quality sensors provide a unique opportunity to develop air pollution conscious community of users for collecting and sharing real time air pollution data. In this thesis, we propose air quality monitoring through mobile sensors, which are low-power, low-cost, designed to sample air pollutants such as carbon mono-oxide, nitrogen oxide, sulphur dioxide, environmental temperature, humidity and air pressure and communicate via Bluetooth with a smartphone. We built an iOS mobile application that makes use of location services available on the mobile phones, to record GPS co-ordinates along with air pollution readings. We built a mobile to cloud replication model, data exchange protocol and outlier detection for anomalous sensor readings. We also employed spatial database queries to optimize location based pollution data sharing and visualization of pollution data overlays on mobile map displays. We evaluated our mobile pollution-sensing model against stationary NJ DEP monitor and studied spatial granularity of pollution data.M.S.Includes bibliographical referencesby Parveen Sevus
