The numerical results have identified some of the characteristics as well as the numerical difficulties associated with the closed-form analysis. The order of texts changes slightly from time to time. The illustrations are the same. The cover picture here is the mirror-opposite of the cover picture there: a man sits before a fire over which a spitted turtle is roasting. There is a curious difference in names, whether of people or places. Thus L'Homme Qui Avait Peur des esprits (3) starts there Au sud de Xiashu vivait un homme nommé Juan Shuliang. The author is listed as Xunsi. Here, some twenty years earlier, the sentence reads Au sud de Sciacheou vivait un homme nommé Kiuan Siun-liang. The author is listed as Siun Tse. Here the title is pasted onto the gray paper cover in a lovely vertical red stripe. Chinese strategic thinking under Mao Tse-tung
Get PDFThis paper traces the development of the military and political strategies of the Chinese Communist Party, as systematised in Mao Tse-tung's Works and other writings attributed to him and as carried out in practice during the struggle for power in China. It shows how these strategies and tactics are applied, in suitably modified form and at different levels of sophistication, to the conduct of foreign relations by the Chinese People{u2019}s Republic. The author argues that, regardless of changes in the hierarchy, the Peking government's actions abroad will continue to reflect the politico-military approach ascribed to Mao Tse-tung, although much of its past policy has now been repudiated as due to distortion of Maoism by deviationist subordinate leaders. This is a welcome addition to the literature on contemporary China by an author with a wide knowledge of Asian affairs

Mutations in the Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmonicida type III secretion system affect Atlantic salmon leucocyte activation and downstream immune responses
No full textDeletion mutants of Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmonicida were used to determine the effect of the type three secretion system (TTSS) on Atlantic salmon anterior head kidney leucocytes (AHKL). One strain had a deletion in the outer membrane pore gene, ascC; and the other in three effector genes: aopO, aopH and aexT (we call this strain Δaop3). Host cell invasion success and 24h survival were depressed in ΔascC, as was 24h survival of Δaop3, when compared to the wild type strain. Challenge of AHKLs with A449 or TTSS mutants stimulated expression of the inflammatory mediators IL-8, IL-1 and TNFα at two bacterial concentrations (A600 0.1, 0.01). Expression of IL-12 was not stimulated in ΔascC challenged cells, whereas A449 and Δaop3 challenge resulted in an up-regulation of IL-12 in AHKLs, 2- and 4-fold higher than PBS, respectively. Only the wild type strain elicited a significant increase in IL-10 expression (5.5× at A600 0.1). Inducible nitric oxide synthetase (iNOS) and arginase (I+II) genes were also significantly up-regulated upon exposure to all strains. However, iNOS:arginase ratio was elevated in the effector mutant challenge. These results suggest that A. salmonicida subsp. salmonicida may enhance survival within the host cell through polarization of macrophages/leucocytes to an alternative, rather than classical, activation state. Furthermore, the short-term survival and lack of T-cell signalling cytokine stimulation in ΔascC, may help explain its inefficiency at providing protection to subsequent wild type challenge.ID: S1050464809002988; M3: Article; Accession Number: S1050464809002988; Author: Mark D. Get PDFThe objectives of my thesis were to investigate three major facets of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR: O2 + 4 H+ + 4 e– → 2 H2O). First, I developed new tri-copper catalysts for the ORR with a specific focus on the active site present in multi-copper oxidases, which are the most active enzymes for the ORR. Second, I evaluated the ORR kinetics at high temperature (between 100 and 200 °C) and under pressurized conditions (between 0.7 and 3.4 MPa).
