Unveiling Keith Pavitt as a pioneer of innovation-as-practice
No full textInternational audiencePurpose The current landscape of management scholarship faces criticism for prioritising theoretical development over practical relevance, leading to a disconnect between academic research and industry practices or applications. By exploring Pavitt’s work, the authors aim to highlight the importance of contextual understanding in innovation processes and to advocate for recognising diverse scholarly contributions that challenge established norms. A pragmatic theorist and mentor to a whole generation of innovation science and policy scholars worldwide, especially in Europe, Keith Pavitt left a legacy that is insufficiently acknowledged. Ultimately, this paper seeks to bridge the gap between theory and practice and to defend an innovation management that is responsive to contemporary organisational challenges. Design/methodology/approach The authors review the most relevant works by Keith Pavitt as a practitioner and as a “pragmatic theorist” and his network of author relationships, including all papers, special issues and reports published after his passing. Then, the authors discuss how those seminal papers or reports have been used and could be used in the future. This paper argues for a balanced approach that integrates rigorous academic inquiry with practical insights, emphasising the contributions of Keith Pavitt as a pioneering figure in Innovation-as-Practice. Findings The authors highlight that much of the current understanding of science and policy of innovation can be traced back to Pavitt’s work and that many future debates about technology could be enhanced by considering his findings. He has the stature of a parental figure, and his taxonomy, based on practice and empirical data, much like other management analysis tools, is widely used but not widely recognised yet, especially by industry managers or employees. Originality/value This paper sheds new light on an unacknowledged transdisciplinary pioneer, whose work is situated at the intersection of theory and praxis in Innovation Management: Keith Pavitt. It also advocates for a more transdisciplinary and circumstantial historical approach to management scholars

No full textO artigo de Keith Pavitt de 19841 tornou-se um clássico da Economia Industrial moderna, em especial de sua vertente centrada na mudança técnica, devido à proposta de taxonomia setorial nele contida, desde então conhecida como a “taxonomia de Pavitt”. Como se sabe, ela propõe em sua versão básica classificar os setores industriais em três categorias, conforme os padrões estruturais inovativos e tecnológicos prevalecentes: (1) supplier dominated (dominados pelos fornecedores); (2) production intensive (intensivos em produção); e (3) science based (baseados em ciência). A terceira categoria, por sua vez, foi subdividida em (3.1) scale intensive (intensivos em escala) e (3.2) specialized suppliers (fornecedores especializados).</jats:p
The Scientometric World of Keith Pavitt: a Tribute to his Contributions to Research Policy and Patent Analysis

This paper aims to examine some of them on the basis of a bibliometric analysis of Keith Pavitt's work and the impact that he has had. First the paper follows how Pavitt's publication profile develops over time. Then we trace his most cited works and explore the sets of references in his papers. Author and journal co-citation maps illustrate the intellectual environment associated with Pavitt and the central role Research Policy played in this context. An analysis of the most frequently cited authors in Research Policy and Scientometrics underlines Keith Pavitt's role as both a shaper of, and a bridge between, science and technology policy and bibliometric analysis

Learning across policy regimes: The impact of protection vis-à-vis competition in the Indian automotive industry
Get PDFLearning has been recognized as an important factor in explaining the growth of firms in both industrial organization theory and literature. However, few models have attempted to relate the learning and growth literature with the industrial policy regime, especially in economies heavily regulated by government policies. The present study attempts to apply one such model of growth and learning of firms across three different industrial policy regimes in the Indian automotive industry. It tries to analyze whether learning is promoted by a competitive or a protective policy regime. It also tries to decompose learning into several types to understand the mechanism underlying the growth process.
