    Arithmetic Kei Theory

A kei, or 2-quandle, is an algebraic structure one can use to produce a numerical invariant of links, known as coloring invariants. Motivated by Mazur\u27s analogy between prime numbers and knots, we define for every finite kei K\mathcal{K} an analogous coloring invariant colK(n)\textrm{col}_{\mathcal K}(n) of square-free integers. This is achieved by defining a fundamental kei for every such nn. We conjecture that the asymptotic average order of colK\textrm{col}_{\mathcal K} can be predicted to some extent by the colorings of random braid closures. This conjecture is fleshed out in general, building on previous work, and then proven for several cases.typo correction

This undergraduate project explores how the Japanese subculture Visual Kei has become a means of expression for Latin American youth seeking to challenge traditional gender roles and affirm their identities. Within a still-conservative Latin American context, Visual Kei offers an outlet for authenticity through its androgynous aesthetics and performative nature. Through costume design, the study analyzes how this scene allows for gender exploration, cultural reinterpretation, and resistance to socially imposed homogeneity. The work is grounded in theoretical and methodological research, including netnography, surveys, and a final performance proposal.

The subject of the thesis was to design a clothing collection consisting of tops, based on the visual kei –clothing culture which originates from Japan. My aim was to design a wearable clothing line that matches well the stylistic influences of visual kei. The target group were Western 15-30-year-old female visual kei –culture hobbyists. I chose to use the FEA -model in my design process. The FEA –model is developed by the Americans Jane M. Lamb and M. Jo Kallal (1992) and it rests upon user-based design. Supported by the model I acquainted myself with the culture and its stylistic influences that I used as my inspiration. I started sketching the models based on the information and idea pictures I collected. From these sketches I developed the models further into final models. The final collection includes eight different upper body garments. From these I produced four and also took photos of a model wearing the garments. I published the collection in my blog and performed a test sale out of two collection pieces. I carried out evaluation by mirroring the end result against the FEA –model criteria I had set in the beginning and against the feedback I received from the target group. The collection got good feedback from the target group and according to them the collection matched the characteristics of visual kei –culture. Out of all the FEA –model criteria, expressiveness and aesthetics came forward better than functionality, but as a whole all sections come true in the final collection named Visual Insanity

    Whangai: remembering, understanding and experiencing

    No full text
The Māori customary practice of whangai is often equated with adoption or foster care. There are, however, significant differences between the institutions. Adoption or foster care, tends to be mainly focused on the interests of the child. The institution of whangai, while being cognizant of the interests of the child, is weighted more towards establishing, nurturing and cementing relationships between individuals, families and broader relational networks. In this paper we draw on the lived experiences of six people who have been raised as whangai and/or have raised whangai. We were interested in their understanding of the cultural concept of whangai, how the customary practice of whangai has changed over time, and their projected thoughts on future generations’ experience of whangai. Findings suggest that the institution of whangai remains as a strong vehicle for both the care of children and for the nurturing of whangai kinship relationships. While participants recognised that contemporary Māori social environments have contributed toward multiple manifestations of whangai, most felt it to be an institution that will be valued and carried into the future
