Artificial intelligence as a linguistic interface in interior design education: Reconceiving design tools as communication media

    No full text
The rapid evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) has fundamentally transformed the role of design tools, extending their function beyond conventional applications to become linguistic interfaces that mediate and structure cognitive and communicative processes in design. This study critically examines the reconfiguration of AI-driven design tools within interior design education, foregrounding their role as discursive agents in design communication. Through an in-depth analysis of an AI-based workshop conducted with interior design students, the research investigates how linguistic engagements with AI systems influences decision-making, conceptualization, and procedural methodologies within the design process. The findings reveal a shift from traditional design heuristics toward a linguistically embedded computational paradigm, elucidating how AI-generated textual and visual interactions inform cognitive schemata and foster epistemic innovation in design education. The study argues that AI-driven design tools not only enhance visualization capabilities but also act as cognitive co-agents that refine and articulate linguistic constructs within design discourse. By proposing an integrative framework for embedding language-oriented AI applications into interior design pedagogy, this research advances a reconceptualization of digital design engagement and advocates for a deeper integration of computational linguistics into design cognition and practice. © The Author(s) 202

Thanks to the tools it has, the city enables to encounter the different and the random, to get to know it and even to interact with it. The most powerful of these tools is open public spaces. Over time, with changing cultural approaches, economic concerns, social disappointments, the organization of urban space and the meanings attributed to open spaces have begun to change, and the interest in art in public spaces and the need for the aesthetic value of artworks have increased. Today, in open public spaces that bring together individuals in the city with different alternatives; in order to increase the spatial quality, artistic arrangements that are in contact with the users of the space and that use the technological opportunities to the full are frequently included. The contemporary artist seeks a change in traditional exhibition methods and aims to strengthen the relationship between the audiences with the designs he produces. With this idea, designers are working on public art applications with functional, historical features that utilize different structures and materials in combination with contemporary techniques. One of them, with the spatial installations, which are also referred to as ‘installation art’, one of the design approaches created in open public spaces, urbanites have the opportunity to have different experiences in terms of space use. The aim of the study; Examining the open public space installations, which are created with flexible materials and application details, which are especially advantageous in passing large openings and which can be easily adapted into the city, on the axis of material-interaction-color-permeability-flexibility-sustainability, how the artists’ expression styles and the perception of city users will be examined to reach conclusions about its impact. The research started with a literature review on the subject, shared current examples, and a framework was established to create a holistic approach through a classification. In this study, the purpose of the selection of installations created with suspented-tensile structures has been defined by the following research questions and the boundaries have been determined.. What is the function of installations in the open public space?. What is the effect of installations created with suspended-tensile structures on the urban landscape in open public space?. What is the effect of suspended-tensile structures on spatial installation designs? How effective is the technology factor?Created with suspended-tensile installations that allow the use of wider space than other types of structures, ‘spaces within space’ can offer applications in which the audience can enter and experience the space from different perspectives. When the installations created with a suspended-tensile structure in open public spaces are examined, it is seen that they are short or long-term depending on the purpose of installation, they can have symbolic, aesthetic and even functional features in some cases. It has been seen that the installations created with suspended-tensile structures allow to create memorable user experiences, increase the interaction in aesthetic and functional dimensions, contain messages from the current period and have positive features to be a source of morale. It has been understood that the installations have the potential to support the continuity of user-space interaction by creating a focal point for the city. The examples examined within the scope of the study emphasize the methodological diversity in the relationship between installation and Suspended-Tensile structure. It can be used to dangle, zone, center, knit, etc. It has been seen that these open public space installations, which are created with suspension-tensile systems that can be easily adapted to the city with flexible approaches in terms of materials and applications, which are especially advantageous in passing large openings, also allow the realization of various urban space activities. It is possible for the masses to socialize and come together for a purpose. Many idle public spaces, which have the opportunity to be included in the city with installations established with a suspendedtensile structure, reach their hidden or unnoticed potential. In this sense, the meaningful and planned coexistence of the urban fabric and its environment also strengthens the integrity effect in designs. It is foreseen that the installations created with suspended-tensile structures, where accessibility is possible with designs of unexpected sizes and forms, will be used more frequently in open public spaces, increasing their area of influence day by day with audience participation in the foreground.&nbsp

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
