Epic-Panegyric Poems by Wacław Potocki. The Question of the Genre on the Basis of the Polish Muse

    No full text
The paper deals with a series of epic-panegyric poems by Wacław Potocki written in the years 1672-1676 and devoted to Jan III Sobieski. Before that he was the great crown hetman, and was introduced as a hero of the wars fought at that time against Turkey and Tartars in the Ukraine. The contents and composition of one of those poems, the Polish Muse of 1676, have been presented in detail, the poem being a summon of the hero to coronation, at the same time is a report on the war events from the recent two years. The author suggests that these works may contain a project (which had not been performed) to write a bigger epic work devoted to Sobieski. He also proposes to isolate those works as a separate genological category, such that can be seen in the literary practice of the author of the Chocim War

W rozdziale I przedstawiono zjawisko twórczości zależnej. Omówiona została geneza, ewolucja i źródła unormowań twórczości zależnej. W rozdziale II omówiono m.in. katalog utworów zależnych, zawarty w polskiej ustawie o prawie autorskim, a także porównano utwór zależny z innymi utworami. The main issue addressed in the thesis is the character of the right of an author of a workto permit the use and disposal of a translation, alteration or adaptation based on the work referred to above (hereinafter: ‘authorization right’). The thesis consists of six chapters, divided into two parts (the first part consists of chapters I-III and the second part consists of chapters IV-VI). Chapter I presents the phenomenon of derivative works creation. It discusses the genesis, evolution and sources of the provisions concerning this phenomenon, contained in international law, EU law and Polish law. Chapter II discusses, among others, the catalogue of derivative works contained in the Polish Copyright Act, and compares a derivative work with other works. Chapter III deals with the issue of derivative copyrights. The exact extent of the copyrights of the author of the derivative work has been explained. In chapter IV, the author of the thesis presented concepts concerning the characterof theauthorization right: the concept of personal, material and mixed character. He also made a comparative legal analysis. In chapter V, the author of the thesis presented arguments for rejecting the concepts of the authorization right as a mixed and personal right. Chapter VI covers a number of detailed issues concerning the right to permit as a property right.Uniwersytet w Białymstoku. Wydział Praw

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Markiz de Tomsk Borysa Klimyczewa − problemy genologiczne

The author of the paper attempts to define the genre of the novel Marquis de Tomsk by Boris Klimychev, a modern (1930-2013) Russian writer from Siberia. His book has not been translated into Polish but neither is Klimychev well known in Russia, his work remaining known mostly to local readers. In the paper an essential emphasis has been placed on the literary analysis of genre characteristics of Klimychev’s romance. Marquis de Tomsk proves extremely difficult to describe because it combines the features of several literary genres. The analysis shows that the writer included in his book elements of historical novel, adventure novel and picaresque romance. He also used techniques and themes typical of the poetics of sentimentality. The plot centres on a series of episodes from the life of the characters, both such that have their historical prototypes and fictional ones. The writer relied on historical sources but also described in the novel interesting characters and events, taking into account their attractiveness to potential recipients. Klimychev foregrounded adventurous stories and made love intrigue an important element of the plot. All these components allow us to conclude that the book under discussion is a historical novel with features of picaresque romance.W artykule zawarte są rozważania teoretycznoliterackie dotyczące określenia przynależności genologicznej utworu Markiz de Tomsk syberyjskiego pisarza Borysa Klimyczewa. Jak udało się ustalić, utwór ten charakteryzuje synkretyzm gatunkowy. W jego poetyce można dostrzec elementy powieści historycznej i romansu awanturniczego. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
