Computationally efficient recursions for top-order invariant polynomials with applications

    No full text
The top-order zonal polynomials Ck(A),and top-order invariant polynomials Ck1,...,kr(A1,...,Ar)in which each of the partitions of ki,i = 1,..., r,has only one part, occur frequently in multivariate distribution theory, and econometrics - see, for example Phillips (1980, 1984, 1985, 1986), Hillier (1985, 2001), Hillier and Satchell (1986), and Smith (1989, 1993). However, even with the recursive algorithms of Ruben (1962) and Chikuse (1987), numerical evaluation of these invariant polynomials is extremely time consuming. As a result, the value of invariant polynomials has been largely confined to analytic work on distribution theory. In this paper we present new, very much more efficient, algorithms for computing both the top-order zonal and invariant polynomials. These results should make the theoretical results involving these functions much more valuable for direct practical study. We demonstrate the value of our results by providing fast and accurate algorithms for computing the moments of a ratio of quadratic forms in normal random variables

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    No full text
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Labor force participation of women left behind in Tajikistan

    No full text
This paper examines the impact of male migration on the labor force participation of the women left behind in Tajikistan. Studies from many countries show that when men migrate, female labor force participation decreases and this is largely explained by the income effect from remittances. Our study challenges this finding. Using panel data from 2007, 2009 and 2011, we find that, in Tajikistan, migration has no significant effect on the number of hours that women work. We use panel data which allow us to control for unobservable heterogeneity, rather than the cross-sectional data used by others. We analyze several countervailing factors that may have neutralized the income effect, such as the need to substitute for the missing labor in the household. We also find that women work more when the household has a farm, regardless of the presence of a migrant in the household

Abstrak Semantik Gramatikal Verba Berafiks Me(N)-Kan/-I dan Te(R)-Kan/-I dalam Bahasa Indonesia. Tulisan ini mengulas semantik gramalikal verba berafiks me(N)- kan-/-i dan te(R)-kan/-i dalam bahasa Indonesia. Di samping itu, dibicarakan pula beberapa masalah yang berkaitan dengan verba berafiks me(N)-kan/-i dan te(R)-kan/-i.Kata kunci: verba, afiks, semantik, gramatikal  Abstract Grammatical Semantic of Verb with Affixes Me(N)-Kan/-i and Te(R)-Kan/-I. This paper discusses the grammatical semantics of verbs with affixes of me (N) – kan-/-i and te (R) –kan/-i in Indonesian. The method used in this research is descriptive method. The data used are taken from newspapers, grammar books, and outhor-made data. The theories used are verbs, morphological process, semantics, types of meaning, and grammatical. Issues to be discussed is the existence of a grammatical semantics of verbs with affixes of me (N) –kan/-i and teR-(-kan/-i) consisting of forms and meanings based on the results of the analysis, it is indicated that the verbs with affixes of me (N) – kan-/-i and te (R) –kan/-i belong to transitive and intransitive verbs which have varied grammatical meanings. In addition, some of the problems associated with verbs with affixes of me (N) – kan-/-i and te (R) –kan/-i are also discussed. Keywords: verb, affix, semantics, grammatica

"Closing the R&D Gap, Evaluating the Sources of R&D Spending"

    No full text
Both spending and tax policies have been implemented in the United States with the goal of stimulating private sector research and development (R&D). Karier questions whether current R&D policy, especially the research and experimentation tax credit, can contribute to closing the gap between nondefense expenditures on R&D in the United States and such expenditures in other countries, such as Japan and Germany. He also explores possible changes to our current R&D policy to make it more effective.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
