Narrative Intersections in an Author Museum: The Olive Schreiner House

    No full text
The Olive Schreiner House in Cradock, South Africa, is an author museum that explores the contributions of an important writer, activist, and early feminist by facilitating new narratives. In the meeting of Schreiner’s texts and contemporary narratives of South African cultural history, this author museum writes a new discourse between literature and society, historic past and democratic present. These intersections result in a narrative project using a historic literary figure to emphasize the young South African democracy in which the museum is situated

Leadership Characteristics within the Making Community

    No full text
abstract: Makers are those who enjoy creating things and learning new skills, as well as interacting within a connected community (Doughtery, 2012). Through the analysis of Makers as part of a larger study (Jordan & Lande, 2013) a researcher had noticed the emergence of leadership traits within the Maker community (Oplinger, Jordan, and Lande, 2015). The National Academy of Engineering has determined that leadership is a key quality for the engineer of the future (Clough, 2004). The Engineering Accreditation Commission has determined several necessary outcomes for engineering students that coincide with leadership roles (Engineering Accreditation Commission, 2012). Proactiveness, confidence, motivation, communication, coaching will be important skills for engineers so that they can effectively lead teams, adjust to change, and synthesize (Ahn, Cox, London, Cekic, and Zhu, 2014). In National Academy of Engineering's The Engineer of 2020 (Clough, 2004) future engineers are expected to be in position to influence "in the making of public policy and in the administration of government and industry." The Maker community offers a broad spectrum of individuals engaged in informal engineering and tinkering activities across multiple pathways (Foster, Wigner, Lande, and Jordan, 2015). This study explores leadership using a theoretical framework of competing values (Quinn, 1988) (Zafft, Adams, and Matkin, 2009) including relating to people, managing processes, leading change, and producing results. The study relies upon artifact elicitation (based on photo elicitation (Harper, 2002)) with 40 of these Makers at four Maker Faires in the United States. The artifact elicitation interviews were conducted at the Maker Faires in front of participants' inventions, where the Makers were asked to describe the invention and the process behind it. Using a theoretical framework of competing values (Quinn, 1988) (Quinn, Faerman, Thompson, and McGrath, 1990) and through parallel inductive-deductive analysis, the emergent themes among our sample of Makers include that they express leadership qualities of (1) innovators \u2014 they utilize different skillsets to develop unique products and solutions; (2) monitors \u2014 they evaluate projects and respond to results; (3) directors \u2014 they set goals and expectations of their projects and processes; and (4) producers \u2014 they are determined and possess a personal drive. From the findings a call to action is made on implementing leadership lessons in the engineering classroom

Enhancement and anisotropy of electron Lande factor due to spin-orbit interaction in semiconductor nanowires

    No full text
We investigate the effective Lande factor in semiconductor nanowires with strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Using the kp\mathbf{k}\cdot\mathbf{p} theory and the envelope function approach we derive a conduction band Hamiltonian where the tensor gg^* is explicitly related to the spin-orbit coupling constant αR\alpha_R. Our model includes orbital effects from the Rashba spin-orbit term, leading to a significant enhancement of the effective Lande factor which is naturally anisotropic. For nanowires based on the low-gap, high spin-orbit coupled material InSb, we investigate the anisotropy of the effective Lande factor with respect to the magnetic field direction, exposing a twofold symmetry for the bottom gate architecture. The anisotropy results from the competition between the localization of the envelope function and the spin polarization of the electronic state, both determined by the magnetic field direction.Comment: 14 pages, 15 figure

Imperial Motherhood: The German Civilizing Mission in Bülow\u27s Im Lande der Verheißung

    No full text
This thesis explores Frieda von Bülow\u27s last and most popular colonial novel. Im Lande der Verheißung, which she wrote in 1899 after she had returned to Germany from her second journey to the German colony of East Africa. In her novel, Bülow manifests her nationalistic ideology and her support for female participation in the colonies in the character of Maleen Dietlas, who believes in and supports the German colonial ambitions. Bülow provides her female protagonist with a role and purpose in the colony. Maleen serves as an imperial mother who sees it as her duty to civilize the German men of the colony. Her true sense of purpose is shown, however, in her guidance of a motherless, wayward, and dark-skinned girl, Maria, who maleen feels nees to be brough into womanhood and civilization . This thesis views Im Lande der Verheißung and Maleen\u27s civilizing mission as a metaphor for Germany\u27s nationalistic objective to civilize its overseas empire

Band nesting, massive Dirac Fermions and Valley Lande and Zeeman effects in transition metal dichalcogenides: a tight-binding model

    No full text
We present here the minimal tight--binding model for a single layer of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) MX2_{2} (M--metal, X--chalcogen) which illuminates the physics and captures band nesting, massive Dirac Fermions and Valley Lande and Zeeman magnetic field effects. TMDCs share the hexagonal lattice with graphene but their electronic bands require much more complex atomic orbitals. Using symmetry arguments, a minimal basis consisting of 3 metal d--orbitals and 3 chalcogen dimer p--orbitals is constructed. The tunneling matrix elements between nearest neighbor metal and chalcogen orbitals are explicitly derived at KK, K-K and Γ\Gamma points of the Brillouin zone. The nearest neighbor tunneling matrix elements connect specific metal and sulfur orbitals yielding an effective 6×66\times 6 Hamiltonian giving correct composition of metal and chalcogen orbitals but not the direct gap at KK points. The direct gap at KK, correct masses and conduction band minima at QQ points responsible for band nesting are obtained by inclusion of next neighbor Mo--Mo tunneling. The parameters of the next nearest neighbor model are successfully fitted to MX2_2 (M=Mo, X=S) density functional (DFT) ab--initio calculations of the highest valence and lowest conduction band dispersion along KΓK-\Gamma line in the Brillouin zone. The effective two--band massive Dirac Hamiltonian for MoS2_2, Lande g--factors and valley Zeeman splitting are obtained

The author presents the development of a concept which permits documentation of safety-oriented measures and activities in the responsible authorities over a prolonged period.
