    The response of mental health professionals to clients seeking help to change or redirect same-sex sexual orientation

    Background: we know very little about mental health practitioners' views on treatments to change sexual orientation. Our aim was to survey a representative sample of professional members of the main United Kingdom psychotherapy and psychiatric organisations about their views and practices concerning such treatments.Methods: We sent postal questions to mental health professionals who were members of British Psychological Society, the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy and the Royal College of Psychiatrists. Participants were asked to give their views about treatments to change homosexual desires and describe up to five patients each, whom they has treated in this way.Results: Of 1848 practitioners contacted, 1406 questionnaires were returned and 1328 could be analysed. Although only 55 (4%) of therapists reported that they would attempt to change a client's sexual orientation if one consulted asking for such therapy, 222 (17%) reported having assisted at least one client/patient to reduce or change his or her homosexual or lesbian feelings. 413 patients were described by these 222 therapists: 213 (52%) were seen in private practice and 117 (28%) were not followed up beyond the period of treatment. Counselling was the commonest (66%) treatment offered and there was no sign of a decline in treatments in recent years. 159 (72%) of the 222 therapists who had provided such treatment considered that a service should be available for people who want to change their sexual orientation. Client/patient distress and client/patient autonomy were seen as reasons for intervention; therapists paid attention to religious, cultural and moral values causing internal conflict.Conclusion: A significant minority of mental health professionals are attempting to help lesbian, gay and bisexual clients to become heterosexual. Given lack of evidence for the efficacy of such treatments, this is likely to be unwise or even harmful

    Inclusive pi(+/-), k+/- and (p,(p)over-bar) Differential Cross-sections At the Z-resonance

    Inclusive pi(+/-), K+/- and (p, (p) over bar) differential cross-sections in hadronic decays of the Z have been measured as a function of z = p(hadron)/p(beam), the scaled momentum. The results are based on approximately 520 000 events measured by the ALEPH detector at LEP during 1992. Charged particles are identified by their rate of ionization energy loss in the ALEPH Time Projection Chamber. The position, xi*, of the peak in the ln(1/z) distribution is determined, and the evolution of the peak position with centre-of-mass energy is compared with the prediction of QCD

    Automation Options for Custom-Made Composite Part Production

    This project analyses the feasibility of the integration of an automation system for custom-made composite part production at the superyacht equipment manufacturer Rondal BV. An analysis of the current prepreg production is performed to understand the automation opportunities and production requirements. Nesting, kitting, protective film removal and the laminating of the plies as well as de-bulking preparation for the laminate were identified as potential automation areas. The analysis also considers the labour time and cost efficiency of the production.Various automation techniques currently applied in other composite manufacturing industries have been considered and analysed for their feasibility to the Rondal product manufacture. The focus of the analysis was to keep the current manufacturing steps, while reducing labour hours and lead time. The proposed system has also been assessed in terms of its future advancement by considering its current state of development within the industry. Based on this analysis the most appropriate automation solution is the “Pick and Place (P&P) cell” concept. Its capabilities and flexibility recommend it as a suitable candidate to be implemented in the automated manufacture of the variety of Rondal products.Challenges of each individual equipment within the P&P cell and their interactions are described in detail. Predictions for the automation equipment except for the film removal tool where able to be obtained through literature and interviews with experts in the industry. Due to the lack of available literature information fitting this specific application, on the protective film removal process, a large proportion of this project was dedicated to the development of this tool. In contrast to previous developments, this project uses shock cooling as a solution to detach the protective film from the prepreg.Implementation of a P&P cell concept was further investigated by the ability of the robot to reach all equipment without affecting the work flow throughout the Rondal workshop. Regulations and other layout restrictions have been considered for the final layout proposal. In order to align the manual and the automation process effectively, common mechanized process steps have been integrated for the use of both approaches.The effectiveness of the chosen automation system was demonstrated by analysing cost and time statistics of the on-site process, as well as observations of a computer-assisted process simulation. As a result, lead time saving of up to 5 work days per product type as well as labour time reduction of up to 50% were determined. However, the economic analysis showed that the investment into the P&P automation system is not feasible given the current volume of production. On the basis of these conclusions, recommendations have been made to Rondal, proving potential production changes that could lead to an effective integration of automation at their facilities.Marine Technology | Ship Design, Production and Operation

    VERDI detector benchmark experiment at the ENEA 14 MeV Frascati Neutron Generator

    For future fusion plants, there is a great need for detectors capable to accurately monitor neutrons under the harsh fusion environment. In particular, detectors required in Test Blanket Modules must be capable to accurately measure neutron fluence under high and variable neutron fluxes, high gamma background, high temperature, high and variable magnetic fields. The noVEl neutRon Detector for fusIon (VERDI) project aims to develop a detector which will provide a robust approach for neutron detection in fusion plants. The detector comprises a low activation capsule containing a defined concentration of added metallic elements. The neutron fluence and energy spectrum will be derived by the analysis of the multiple gamma lines produced by the metallic elements activation. In this work, the candidate metallic elements for the VERDI detector are defined. A benchmark experiment with a number of prototype detectors was performed at the ENEA Frascati Neutron Generator under DT operation to demonstrate the feasibility of VERDI detectors to measure neutron fluence under a reference fusion relevant field. The results of product isotopes measurements are compared to respective calculated data using the FISPACT-II code and very good agreement is observed.     In future fusion power plants, such as DEMO, the D-T neutron emission rate is predicted to exceed 1 × 1021 n s−1. Accurately monitoring neutron energies and intensities will be the primary method for estimating fusion power, and calculating key nuclear parameters, including the tritium breeding ratio and nuclear heating. The noVel nEutRon Detector for fusIon (VERDI) project, implemented under the EUROFusion Enabling Research 2017 program, aims to develop a detector capable of withstanding the harsh environment of a future fusion power plant. The VERDI detector is based on the foil activation technique, which relies on neutron spectrum unfolding methods to process the convolution of gamma-ray measurement and detector response function to infer the neutron energy spectrum. This paper details the experimental method and results collected using six prototype VERDI detectors during an initial experiment performed in July 2017 at the ENEA Frascati Neutron Generator (FNG) under D-T neutrons (14 MeV). The measured activities of product isotopes are compared with equivalent data calculated using the FISPACT-II code to provide an average C/Eact agreement of 1.05±0.13.     Status of ITER material activation experiments at JET

    Activities under the EURO fusion work package JET3 programme have been established to enable the technological exploitation of the planned JET experiments over the next few years, which culminates in a D-T experimental campaign, DTE-2. In the areas of nuclear technology and nuclear safety the programme offers a unique opportunity to provide experimental data that is relevant to ITER. The key purpose of the collected data will be to support bench marking and validation activities relating to neutronics and activation codes, and associated nuclear data, that are used to predict the nuclear behavior of ITER component and materials, during and after operations.This paper details the status and key issues of the ongoing ACT sub-project under work package JET3, which aims to take advantage of the large 14 MeV neutron fluence expected during JET DTE-2 to irradiate samples of real ITER materials used in the manufacturing of the main in-vessel tokamak components. The materials considered, with specified minor elemental impurity levels, include: Nb3Sn, SS316L steels from a range of manufacturers, SS304B, Alloy 660, W, CuCrZr, OF-Cu, XM-19, Al bronze, NbTi and EUROFER. The activities include provision for measurement of nuclide activities for each material and comparison against the predicted quantities through calculation with the FISPACT-II inventory code. Included here are key pre-analysis results for the selected ITER irradiation samples, and corresponding optimization of dosimetry foils (Ti, Mn, Co, Ni, Y, Fe, Co, Sc, Ta) that will be irradiated at selected positions inside JET irradiation stations in order to determine the neutron spectrum. We developed a color-center laser spectrometer combined with a pulsed supersonic-jet expansion technique and applied it to observe the absorption spectrum of the ν12(e1μ)\nu_{12}(e_{1\mu}) band of benzene at 3047.9cm13047.9 cm^{-1}. Although the Q-branch lines were still overapped, the P- and R-branch lines near the band origin, with J and K quantum numbers up to 15, were observed well resolved, thanks to the rotational colling in the jet. The rotational temperature in the jet was estimated to be 49K4-9 K from the observed line intensities. The rotational temperature showed strong J-dependence, whereas those for the various K-stack were almost identical indicating the freezing between K-stacks screcely occur in the present experimental condition. The molecular constants derived are consistent with the more accurate result by cotinuous molecular beam experiment with bolometer detectionadetection^{a}

Its main features, which are described herein, are: an external positron accumulator, making it possible to accumulate large numbers of positrons; a separate antiproton catching trap, optimizing the catching, colling and handling of antiprotons: a unique high resolution antihydrogen annihilation detector, allowing a clear determination that antihydrogen has been produced; an open, modular design making variations in the experimental approach possible and a "nested" Penning trap situated in a cryogenic, 3T magnetic field environment used for the mixing of the antiprotons and positrons

The event selection, optimized for reconstructing a single top quark in the final state, requires exactly one isolated lepton (muon or electron) and exactly two jets, one of which is likely to originate from the hadronization of a bottom quark. The analysis is performed using data recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC in 2012. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb?1. The measured helicity fractions are FL = 0.298 ± 0.028 (stat) ± 0.032(syst), F0 = 0.720 ± 0.039 (stat) ± 0.037(syst), and FR = ?0.018 ± 0.019 (stat) ± 0.011(syst).
