Making it Just in Time: Author-Creator Matsumoto Taiyō
Translated by Jon Holt and Teppei Fukuda
The first time I can remember encountering Matsumoto Taiyō’s work was probably when he released his short story collection, Blue Spring (Aoi haru - Matsumoto Taiyō tanpenshū [stories published from 1990 to 1993; Shōgakukan, 1993]). All of the stories concern a bunch of young dudes -- full of desires, frustrations, and violent tendencies -- and no chance they can ever get past those things. I thought to myself at that time, “Ah, I bet this stuff means a lot to readers in their teens, but they don’t really do anything for me.” After all, I was a man in my forties, so this stuff wasn’t on my radar as I was busy becoming a grown-up. Keep in mind that Taiyō himself was just in his early twenties. So, it really wasn’t that unnatural for him to write about life like that
Matsumoto Seicho's Saigo-Satsu Writing fiction as Escapism A Critical Biography of Matsumoto Seicho, 1949 to 1951
Matsumoto Kiyoharu worked as a commercial artist for the newspaper Asahi from 1937 to 1957, after which he devoted himself to the writing from his early forties and he adopted the pseudonym Matsumoto Seicho. His earliest work Saigo-Satsu was written when he was still working at The Asahi Shimbun in Kokura, Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture. The reason why he began writing his first novel Saigo-Satsu was that he wanted to escape from reality. It won the third prize of a contest in 1950 and it was nominated for the Naoki literary award. In this paper, the author describes the social description from 1949 to 1951 and analyzes his first three novels, Saigo-Satsu, Kagero, and Kuruma-Yado. According to the analysis, he is said to have already established his own style when he began writing novels.departmental bulletin pape
A multi-dimensional version of Lamperti's relation and the Matsumoto-Yor processes
This paper presents a multidimensional extension of the Matsumoto-Yor
properties related to exponential functionals of drifted Brownian motion. The
extension involves the interaction of geometric Brownian motions which are
indexed by the vertices of a finite weighted graph, and the random potential
associated with the Vertex Reinforced Jump process on this graph. We prove in
this context a counterpart of Lamperti's transformation, of the Markov property
of the Matsumoto-Yor process and of the intertwining relation.Comment: Extended version of arXiv:2004.10692 with a new author Keywords:

Sociology essay
Sociology essay by Yumi Matsumoto for a class assignment at Tri-State High School at Tule Lake incarceration camp. Covers how population influences social life and problems. The Japanese American Archival Collection documents the people, places, and daily life of Japanese Americans, primarily those who lived in the once thriving community of pre-war Florin in the Sacramento region, as well as the conditions in American incarceration camps during World War II. The approximately 7,000 original items include personal and official letters, photographs, diaries, arts and crafts, newsletters, textiles, camps artifacts, yearbooks and other publications
Ruby in a nutshell: a desktop quick reference
Ruby is an absolutely pure object-oriented scripting language written in C and designed with Perl and Python capabilities in mind. While its roots are in Japan, Ruby is slowly but surely gaining ground in the US. The goal of Yukihiro Matsumoto, creator of Ruby and author of this book, is to incorporate the strengths of languages like Perl, Python, Lisp and Smalltalk. Ruby is a genuine attempt to combine the best of everything in the scripting world. Since 1993, Ruby mailing lists have been established, Web pages have formed, and a community has grown around it. The language itself is very good at text processing and is notable for its broad object orientation. Ruby is portable and runs under GNU/Linux (and other Unices) as well as DOS, MS Windows and Mac. With Ruby in a Nutshell, Matsumoto offers a practical reference to the features of this new language including the command-line options, syntax, built-in variables, functions, and many commonly used classes and modules. This guide covers the current stable version of Ruby (1.6), yet is applicable to the development version 1.7 and the next planned stable version 1.8. You will find a thorough description of Ruby's language syntax, and a description of the core functionality built into the standard Ruby interpreter, which has more than 800 built-in methods in 42 classes and modules
Noise Reduction Combining a General Microphone and a Throat Microphone
In this study, we propose a method to reduce noise from speech obtained from a general microphone using the information of a throat microphone. A throat microphone records a sound by detecting the vibration of the skin surface near the throat directly. Therefore, throat microphones are less prone to noise than ordinary microphones. However, as the acoustic characteristics of the throat microphone differ from those of ordinary microphones, its sound quality degrades. To solve this problem, this study aims to improve the speech quality while suppressing the noise of a general microphone by using the information recorded by a throat microphone as reference information to extract the speech signal in general microphones. In this paper, the framework of the proposed method is formulated, and several experiments are conducted to evaluate the noise suppression and speech quality improvement effects of the proposed method
Rozarium Shinjuku, przechadzka. Quasi-dokumentalny portret japońskiej społeczności queer w "Żałobnej paradzie róż" ("Bara no Sōretsu", reż. T. Matsumoto, 1969)
This essay explores the intricate interplay between documentary and narrative elements in the film Funeral Parade of Roses (Bara no Sōretsu, dir. T. Matsumoto, 1969). The film centers on the character of Eddie, a queer individual working as a hostess in a gay bar in Tokyo’s Shinjuku district. The narrative intertwines Eddie’s romantic relationship with the bar owner Gonda and his conflict with the establishment’s manager Leda. Flashbacks to Eddie’s childhood and the revelation that Gonda is his long-lost father have led many Western scholars to interpret the film as a loose adaptation of Oedipus Rex. However, this essay challenges such readings, proposing an analysis of the film through the lens of gender and sexual identity in 1960s Japan. The study integrates elements of Western theory (Ch. Baudelaire, W. Benjamin, G. Deleuze, F. Guattari, S. Sontag) with research on the specificity of Japanese culture (D. Desser, A. Jacoby, M.J. McLelland, A.M. Nornes, D. Richie, T. Satō, T. Schmidt, I. Standish), as well as insights from the director (T. Matsumoto) and his interpreters (M. Ko, M. Raine). The chosen methodology facilitates an exploration of the relationship between the individual and reality as depicted in documentary form. By employing the concept of the flâneur to capture the essence of Shinjuku, the author emphasizes the film’s eclecticism, which, through diverse conventions and cultural influences, creates a nuanced portrayal of Japan’s sexual minorities and offers a commentary on the impact of foreign influences on Japanese collective society
Engineering of polyhydroxyalkanoate synthase by Ser477X/Gln481X saturation mutagenesis for efficient production of 3-hydroxybutyrate-based copolyesters
Class II polyhydroxyalkanoate synthase from Pseudomonas sp. 61-3 (PhaC1_[Ps]) synthesizes 3-hydroxybutyrate (3HB)-based copolyesters, P[3HB-co-3-hydroxyalkanoate (3HA)]. Four sites (130, 325, 477, and 481) in PhaC1_[Ps] that affect the cellular content and 3HB fraction of P(3HB-co-3HA) produced have been identified. Simple combination of beneficial mutations at the sites successfully increased 3HB fraction in the copolymers (62 mol%). However, polymer content was often largely decreased (0.2 wt%) regardless of an enhancement in 3HB fraction, compared to the wild-type enzyme (14 mol% 3HB and 12 wt%) [Matsumoto et al. (2006) Biomacromolecules, 7:2436-2442]. In the present study, we attempted to explore residues combination at the four sites to overcome the problem. Here, pairwise saturation mutagenesis at the neighboring sites 477 and 481 of PhaC1_[Ps] was performed using single and double mutations at sites 130 and 325 as templates, to increase 3HB fraction in the copolymer without reducing the polymer content in recombinant Escherichia coli. These useful PhaC1_[Ps] mutants were screened based on enhanced P(3HB) content, and were subsequently applied to P(3HB-co-3HA) production. Among the mutants tested, the Ser325Cys/Ser477Lys/Gln481Leu mutant exhibited increased 3HB fraction in copolymer (63 mol%) and also polymer content (18 wt%), indicating that mutation scrambling was effective for obtaining the desired mutants
