New book on Maria Leitner
This new book unearths some texts by Maria Leitner, a socialist reporter working in Weimar Germany who sadly is nearly forgotten today. As a female investigative journalist, she paved the way for the likes of Grace Drummond-Hay and Marie Colvin. Julia Killet, Helga W. Schwarz: Maria Leitner oder: Im Sturm der Zei
Diasporas and democratization in the post-communist world
If diaspora communities are socialized with democratic values in Western societies, they could be expected to be sympathetic to the democratization of their home countries. However, there is a high degree of variation in their behavior. Contrary to the predominant understanding in the literature that diasporas act in exclusively nationalist ways, this article argues that they do engage with the democratization of their home countries. Various challenges to the sovereignty of their homelands explain whether diasporas involve with procedural or liberal aspects of democratization. Drawing evidence from the activities of the Ukrainian, Serbian, Albanian and Armenian diasporas after the end of communism, I argue that unless diasporas are linked to home countries that enjoy both international legal and domestic sovereignty, they will involve only with procedural aspects of democratization. Diasporas filter international pressure to democratize post-communist societies by utilizing democratic procedures to advance unresolved nationalist goals

Abstract : This biographical sketch attempts to quote some images of Otto Maria Carpeaux: various types of biographical constructions, carried out in different contexts by disparate authors under conditions just as distinct. It stems from a critical view of history, allowing for ?other images? fragmented and non-monumental ? to share the space. In dialogue with the montage principle, this sketch has two parts. The first, Possible Images, quotes the images produced during and after the life of the Austrian-Brazilian, who was born in Vienna in 1900, went to Brazil in exile in 1939 and died in Rio de Janeiro in 1978. The second part, Possible Montages, presents two possibilities of a biographical exercise: through the allegorical reading of documentary O Velho e o Novo (Otto Maria Carpeaux), understood as an instrument of intervention in the Brazilian dictatorship context and as a biographical retelling of the author?s European experiences; and through my Scrapbook of Critical Images, a record of the encounters in Carpeaux through critical images produced from the caesura of the present
This article harvests and discusses the main theses and contributions of the works of Julia Kristeva in face of the post-structuralist challenge of investigating communications as a question of micropolitics rather than of gramaticalities and transmission. To do so, it departs from the dialogisms of communication (in its founding theses, mainly Bakhtin) towards its reformulation as intertextualities (Kristeva and Barthes) working in a logic of significance. This significance, understood as the foundation, but also as the becoming (devenir) of signification, is presented through its relations with textuality and the pairs phenotext/genotext and semiotic/symbolic which constitute signifying practices. This leads us to the emphasis of semanalysis in the productivity and the work (travail) that communication studies may investigate not only as signification, but as an elaboration and problematization of sense.O trabalho recolhe e discute as principais teses e contribuições da obra de Julia Kristeva em relação ao desafio pós-estruturalista da investigação em comunicação como uma questão menos de gramática e transmissão do que de micropolítica.
'A local habitation and a name A Kristevan reading of human growth in religion, with a reference to John and Charles Wesley'
This study is concerned with the concept of human growth and change: it juxtaposes processes of growth and change in psychoanalytic therapy and those in a religious context. In both situations the relationship between growth and development and the idea of becoming 'good' is considered. Kleinian, Post-Kleinian and particularly Kristevan theory is used to elucidate facilitators of change in psychoanalytic therapy and in the context of Christian faith. The emphases in the theory used here differ from those of more traditional developmental theorists in the study of religion, which rely heavily on ego-psychology and self-psychology, and focus on the autonomous ego and the degree of maturity of forms of religion. By contrast, the emphases here are on the split self, on unconscious drives, phantasies and affects, and on the non-cognitive apprehension of truth. Through an examination of the lives of John and Charles Wesley, the thesis examines the possibility of growth occurring in the context of so-called 'immature’ forms of religion, the means by which this might occur, and the extent to which change is governed by an individual's mental structure and psychological defences. The Kristevan reading allows a less cognitive, 'ego-driven' study of the growth to 'goodness' than does that of the developmental theorists. It thus questions the validity of traditional classifications of forms of religion. It elicits differences between the historical subjects, which demonstrate the importance of personality factors in facilitating or hindering growth. Finally, it enables an exploration of Charles Wesley’s hymns which reveals evidence of erotic and imaginary elements, and the possibility of triadic openness in what some would see as an 'immature' form of belief. This examination also questions Kristeva's own assertion that religious symbolism cannot adequately 'sublimate' the 'abject'
