Some properties of robust statistics under asymmetric models
Properties of robust statistics have been extensively studied in the univariate setting when the underlying model is presumed to be symmetric, and in the multivariate case when the underlying model is presumed to be elliptically symmetric. Much less attention has been given to the behavior of robust statistics under asymmetric models. The goal of this dissertation is thus to obtain theoretical results for robust statistics under asymmetric models. To this end, local asymmetric alternatives to symmetric and elliptically symmetric distributions are considered. A key tool used in obtaining the theories presented in this dissertation is the LeCam's lemmas on contiguity.
The classes of robust univariate statistic considered here are the M-estimates, one-step version of the M-estimates, the W-estimates and the trimmed means. The classes of robust multivariate statistics considered are the M-estimates, the S-estimates, the CM-estimates and the MM-estimates, which are all treated under the unified framework of M-estimates with auxiliary scale, as well as their one-step versions. Asymptotic distributions of these statistics are obtained under local mixture models and skew-symmetric models. The asymptotic properties for the MM-estimates, even under elliptical symmetry, are the first such results for the multivariate MM-estimates.
Under asymmetry, different robust statistics for location are not consistent with each other, i.e. they are estimating different notions of central tendency. Likewise, in the multivariate setting, under non-elliptical distributions, the different scatter statistics are again not consistent with each other and are reflecting different structures of the underlying distribution. This suggests the difference in location statistics can be used to detect asymmetry and the comparison of different scatter statistics can be used to detect deviations from elliptical symmetry.
Consequently, new classes of tests for symmetry and for elliptical symmetry are introduced in this dissertation based upon the comparisons of different location statistics and different scatter statistics respectively. Furthermore, the asymptotic null distributions of the proposed test statistics are derived as well as their local power functions under contiguous mixture distributions. Addressing the uncertain geographic context problem by advanced spatial analysis approaches based on GIS and GPS for environmental health studies
Scholars in the fields of health geography, urban planning, and transportation studies have long attempted to understand the relationships among human movement, environmental context, and their effect on health outcomes. Considerable research has been conducted to advance our understanding of how environmental exposures affects health behaviors and outcomes. In many of these studies, however, environmental exposures are found to have inconsistent associations with health. The uncertain geographic context problem (UGCoP) is one of the most important methodological issues that contribute to the inconsistent findings. This dissertation explores the methodological issues in environmental health research causing the uncertain findings and how the UGCoP influences research findings, proposes an activity space approaches to comprehensively assess the individual exposures to environmental contexts, and designs an innovative environmental exposure evaluation framework to spatiotemporally assess individual environmental exposure and evaluated the environmental effects on health outcomes. With empirical analysis of real-world applications with the GPS tracking data and environmental context data collected at Chicago, IL, and Columbus, OH, these proposed approaches are proved perform better than currently widely used methods. Taking into account the complex spatial and temporal dynamics of individual environmental exposures, the proposed methods also helps to mitigate the UGCoP in important ways. Wang Shuo and the commercialisation of contemporary Chinese culture
This thesis examines the commercialisation of Chinese culture that has taken place over the past twenty years in mainland China. It explores the contribution of Wang Shuo, a cultural figure who straddles different fields of culture, moving from literature to the ultimate mass culture medium of television, this study plots Wang Shuo' s development from educational failure, to business failure, to fiction writer, film & TV editor, film director and cultural critic and analyst. His stories, films, TV series and articles have caused shock-waves throughout national cultural circles as he has transformed the terms of the debate from academic discourse to a validation of the role of the market in the culture field. Although Wang Shuo has not been labelled as a dissident, his approach to the culture market has had a more subversive effect on official ideology that those overt dissidents who have had to live in exile or have been imprisoned. He has utilised the language of official ideology to satirise the authorities, turning the ideology and its supporters into figures of fun. Yet his own goals have been strictly personal and economic ones. The authorities recognize the value of Wang Shuo's work in the cultural market but at the same time distrust his works and place him under strict censorship. Examining the way Wang Shuo and people surround him have succeeded in different fields of cultural achievement is a mirror to understanding the process of the transformation of contemporary Chinese culture from a socialist state-controlled culture to a market-oriented mass culture industry
A Research on "Sanyi Tanyuan" by Jue-Yi Wang
Jue-Yi Wang, also known as Beihai Elderly, is the fifteenth-generation patriarch of the Post East in I-Kuan Tao. He was born and died in the period from Daoguang twelve years \uef\ubc1832\uef\ubc to Guangxu ten years \uef\ubc1884\uef\ubc of the Qing Dynasty. It was the time when Western powers entered China. The Qing government signed many unequal treaties with the western countries and established trade ports. China then opened its closed doors in addition to economic and trade. The influx of Western religious culture soon brought changes and innovations to Chinese traditional culture. In addition, facing the new trend of thought in the West, the ruling class, literati, gentry, and common people have developed multiple thoughts at different levels.
In the late Qing Dynasty, with the influx of opium in large quantities, all social strata were deeply poisoned by opium, and the people's lives were full of misery. Moreover, facing the strong ships and guns of Western countries, and the signing of unequal treaties, the territory was gradually lost, and the territorial waters, justice, and customs duties were lost. The economic aggression of Western countries, as well as the annexation of land by local officials and landlords in the Qing Dynasty, the traditional rural economy was destroyed, and various places took the opportunity to riot one after another. In such an eventful environment, the folk sects at that time were flourishing promoted and the thoughts of folk religious beliefs by Jue-Yi Wang brought comfort and dependence to the people. Although he is in the chaotic and changing environment of the world, Jue-Yi Wang does not shake his heart for practicing and exploring the truth. In his "Zheng Dao Ge", he says :"Once a single thought is not born, not dead, or alive, the spirit then is Buddha. Everything that dwells is an illusion, and there is no attachment or no care to be full of universe. Human affairs are like waves, jumping out of the nest of right and wrong. The Peaceful Bodhisattva always guard by himself. Furthermore, when the five aggregates of color, feeling, thinking, action, consciousness are empty, one will become DaLuo Immortal." In the situation of the turbulent world affairs, Jue-Yi Wang was not only unaffected by foreign thoughts from the West but he also maintained research and respect for traditional Chinese culture. Jue-Yi Wang studies Neo-Confucianism and integrates the thoughts of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism, and absorbs the essence of all parties. It played a very important role in the folk beliefs at that time, and the MoHou-YiZhuo religion he created had far-reaching influence.
The origin of "Sanyi Tanyuan" by Jue-Yi Wang is his understanding and admiration after he studied the "I Ching." He believes that the "I Ching" is the ancestor of all the scriptures and the source of all Dharma in the discussion of "no changes", "changes", "transaction", which are to find the original meaning of being born as a human being, and to explain the value of the source of life. In addition, "Sanyi Tanyuan" cites many ancient books and classics, from the practice of eliminating evil to good, as well as the true nature of Wuji, all of which are systematically demonstrated and analyzed. From the remarks and thoughts of the sages in the past, and comparing the habits and ignorance of the people of the time, Jue-Yi Wang quoted the three ages of the Dharma of Buddhism, namely the age of "Right Dharma", the age of "Semblance" and the age of "Degenerate Dharma".
In Jue-Yi Wang\ue2s point of view, he thought that in this sea of desire and under the "Degenerate Dharma" of reincarnation life and death and the truth is dimly discernible; in his book of "Sanyi Tanyuan" is to clarify his understanding of the truth, Tao, and Wuji, solving the confusion for those who do not understand, together with the essentials of self-cultivation and life which are left for further generations
A Study of the Classical Landscape at the Wang River Villa of Wang Wei
The landscape of Wang Wei's Wang River Villa is examined by reviewing the essays and papers written about the poetical collaboration, the “Wang River Collection.” The purpose of this paper is to clarify the meaning of villa architecture in China. The author expects that this research will contribute to a mutual understanding between cultures. The villa was a Utopia for Wang. On the other hand, he was a pious Buddhist and Buddhistic concepts are reflected in the landscape. I consider the features of the classical landscape of Xie Lingyun and "Chu Ci," as written in “The Collection,” a reflection of the Buddhistic concept. When considering what the classics meant to Wang Wei, it is apparent that his villa is a representation of the classical landscape. Enhancing the hydrogen evolution reaction on MoS2 flakes by cold plasma treatment
© 2022 The AuthorsThe edge sites of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) have high catalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, the ratio of edge sites to those on the surface of MoS2 is generally low, which limits the catalytic activity. Thus, efficient and rapid creation of catalytically active sites on the inert MoS2 basal plane is important. Cold plasma treatment can achieve such a result. Here we report the use of a cold plasma method to introduce defects and local phase transformation of the inert 2H phase of MoS2. After cold plasma treatment with argon or oxygen, the previously inert MoS2 basal plane shows outstanding performance. The overpotential, at a high current density of 300 mA cm−2, was reduced by 30% (18%) from 373 mV to 261 mV (307 mV) after argon (oxygen) cold plasma treatment. Our results clearly show that argon and oxygen cold plasma treatments have the effect of activating the inert 2H phase of MoS2.
