Obituary: PAULO JORGE GUERREIRO ESTEVESPaulo Esteves, who died unexpectedly of an asthma-related condition at the age of 39 at his home in July, was an architect who maintained a deep intellectual engagement with his practice. Prolific, he produced a vast number of residential projects and nature reserve lodges across South Africa in the brief 15 years that he was active. He studied at the University of Witwatersrand, graduating in 1999. Following graduation, he worked at Mashabane Rose Associates on the Apartheid Museum and at Paragon Architects, before setting up his own practice, Parallax Design Laboratory, in 2002. Throughout this period he was also a gifted pianist and baritone, which proved influential in his career as an architect

The first book by Jorge Amado in English translation was published in the United States in 1945 by Alfred A. Knopf Publishers, under the auspices of the U.S. State Department, who sponsored a cultural interchange program as part of president Roosevelts the Good Neighbor Policy. Translated literature was seen, at the time, as a way of understanding the other. Érico Veríssimo, Gilberto Freyre, Alfred and Blanche Knopf, Samuel Putnam and Harriet de Onís were actors in this scenario. In spite of his support of the tenets of the political left, after leaving the Communist Party in the late 1950s Jorge Amado became an American bestseller, a result of such diplomatic movement as well as Alfred A. Knops translation project. Nevertheless, other influence networks also affected the authors reception in the United States, which turned out to be quite different from that in the Eastern Europe, for instance. This research investigates the relation between the aforementioned actors, such influence network and Brazils cultural representation in Jorge Amados translated literature in the United States

Osteopathic clinical reasoning: An ethnographic study of perceptual diagnostic judgments, and metacognition

    No full text
Background: Clinical reasoning has been widely researched in the health sciences; however, in osteopathy it is still in its relative infancy. Objective: To explore the moment by moment clinical reasoning processes of an osteopath whilst with patients, to understand the role of perceptual diagnostic judgments, and metacognitive processes. Method: A qualitative interpretive study with a novel narrative method as an organising structure: the moment by moment thought processes of a single osteopath were recorded and transformed into descriptions of the interactions with patients. The descriptive texts were expanded into narratives using autoethnography and reflective practice. Narratives were then analysed using methods originating from grounded theory. Results: Our interpretations indicate that osteopaths establish a multisensory construct during clinical reasoning which enables both analytic and intuitive decision-making strategies. Clinical reasoning was monitored by a variety of metacognitive processes, including intuitive discernments such as feeling that a decision is correct, and the judgment that there is sufficient information to make that decision. Conclusions: This is the first study to explore the subjective moment by moment clinical reasoning and decision-making strategies of an osteopath whilst with patients. It suggests that perceptual diagnostic judgments are multisensory and include mental and visual imagery, and embodied senses. These enable analytic and intuitive diagnostic strategies that are accompanied by persistent metacognitive processes during the consultation, which guide the practitioner's decision strategies.</p

Skew product cycles with rich dynamics: from totally non-hyperbolic dynamics to fully prevalent hyperbolicity

    No full text
We introduce a two-parameter family of partially hyperbolic' skew products (G(a, t)) maps with one dimensional centre direction. In this family, the parameter a models the central dynamics and the parameter t the unfolding of cycles (that occurs for t = 0). The parameter a also measures the central distortion' of the systems: for small a, the distortion of the systems is small and it increases and goes to infinity as a . The family (G(a, t)) displays some of the main characteristic properties of the unfolding of heterodimensional cycles as intermingled homoclinic classes of different indices and secondary bifurcations via collision of hyperbolic homoclinic classes. For a in (0, log2), the dynamics of (G(a, t)) is always non-hyperbolic after the unfolding of the cycle. However, for a > log4 intervals of t-parameters corresponding to hyperbolic dynamics appear and turn into totally prevalent as a (the density of hyperbolic parameters' goes to 1 as a ). The dynamics of the maps G(a, t) is described using a family of iterated function systems modelling the dynamics in the one-dimensional central direction. This paper is part of doctoral thesis of Salete Esteves partially supported by the project PEst-C/MAT/UI0144/2011 of FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, Portugal). Chromadora serrambi sp. nov. (Figures 1–4, Table 1) http://zoobank.org/ 4FDD4AB1-F6F8-4A3A-89F8-7EDB0330B8A2 Type material. Holotype male (MOUFPE 0001), paratype female (MOUFPE 0002), others paratypes: 5 males (443–447 NM LMZOO-UFPE) and 5 females (448–452 NM LMZOO-UFPE). Type Locality. Serrambi beach (S 8°33’31.5” W 35°00’16.7”), located on the southern coast of the State of Pernambuco, in the Northeastern region of Brazil. Etymology. The specific epithet ‘serrambi’ is given because this species was found in a coral reef located on Serrambi beach. In addition, the species has a unique characteristic (autapomorphy) and for this reason the collection site was chosen for its name. Description. Holotype (Male). Body cylindrical, 597 µm long. Maximum body diameter 23 µm, anterior region attenuated, head diameter 9 µm (45% of body diameter in pharynx end). Annulated cuticle with transversal rows of small dots. Lateral longitudinal differentiation represented by four rows of larger and more spaced dots. This pattern is homogeneous throughout the body extension. Cephalic arrangement 6+6+4, inner and outer labial sensilla papilliform; cephalic setiform sensilla measuring 0.7 times head diameter. Amphideal fovea difficult to see (the same condition was observed in all analyzed specimens). Buccal cavity armed with three solid teeth, one dorsal and two ventral, dorsal tooth larger and curved. Secretory–excretory pore located 9 µm from anterior end (0.7 times head diameter). Secretory–excretory gland posterior to pharynx with two cells present, one well developed measuring 46 µm (proximal) and one of reduced size (7 µm). Ocelli situated 19 µm from anterior end and nerve ring located 65 µm from anterior end, posterior to middle of pharynx length. Pharynx with rounded bulb, occupying 23% of pharynx length; anterior muscle interruption can be viewed. The reproductive system with a single outstretched testis. Spicules 1.3 times the cloacal body diameter, curved and cephalated. Gubernaculum narrow, occupying 68% of spicule length, with expanded distal portion, embracing the spicules. Pre-cloacal supplements absent. Tail conical-elongated measuring 6.1 times cloacal body diameter, with a small spinneret (4 µm). Paratypes (Females). Very similar to male. Reproductive system amphidelphic with reflexed ovaries with branches bent in opposite directions. Anterior gonad to the right of the intestine and the posterior gonad to the left of the intestine. Vulva located anteriorly to mid-body region (47–48.7% of total length). Tail 5.8–7.4 times anal body diameter. Diagnosis. Chromadora serrambi sp. nov. is characterized by a simple bulb, cephalic setae 0.6–0.7 times head diameter in male and 0.7–0.9 in female. Secretory-excretory pore 0.7–0.9 times head diameter from anterior end. Ocelli present. Spicules 1–1.3 times cloacal body diameter. Gubernaculum narrow (60–68% of spicule length), with expanded distal portion, embracing the spicules. Precloacal supplements absent. Tail conical-elongated with a small spinneret (5.5–6.4 times cloacal body diameter in male and 5.8–7.4 times anal body diameter in female). Differential diagnosis (Relationships). Chromadora serrambi sp. nov. is the only Chromadora species where pre-cloacal supplements are absent which facilitates its identification. In relation to the gubernaculum, C. macrolaimoides presents a similar shape (distal expansion), however it seems to be less developed (smaller and less sclerotized) in the new species (11–14 µm vs. 18–23 µm). The anterior region (position of the ocelli and secretoryexcretory pore, bulb shape) is similar to that observed in C. nudicapitata redescribed by Kito (1978a,b).Published as part of Neres, Patrícia Fernandes, Santos, Paulo Jorge Parreira Dos & Esteves, André Morgado, 2021, New chromadorid nematodes from Brazilian coral reefs: a taxonomic contribution to Chromadora Bastian, 1865, pp. 47-79 in Zootaxa 5032 (1) on pages 50-56, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.5032.1.2, http://zenodo.org/record/547747

    No full text
In this article we introduce a one-parameter family of skew product (Gt)t ∈ [−ε, ε] maps exhibiting a heterodimensional cycle such that the number of isolated periodic orbits inside it has not super-exponential growth. The dynamics in the central direction of the maps Gt is described by a one-parameter family of system of iterated functions. This work is part of the PhD thesis of the author, under the supervision of Lorenzo Diaz and Jorge Rocha.
