Roots, contemporary state and perspectives of the new religiosity
In the study the author deals with problems of religious views and practices of the Czech population. He discusses roots of the recent growth of its identification with religion with regard to the European context. He finds these roots in the crisis of the modem world that is accompanied with the increasing ignoration of spiritual values and with the seeking after something new. The phenomenon of the new religiosity does not mean only a revival of traditional religions. In Czech Republic, as well as in the whole Europe, we can see the rising new religions and various spiritual movements. It is difficult to say what kind of category we meet in those cases: nonteistic religion or some pseudoreligious entity (e.g. Human Potentiality Movements, political cults). Some of the new religious movements are characterized by a dangerous narrow-minded, sectarian self-identification with a concrete religion or its substitution. In the end the author lists institutions and research groups dealing with the spirituality of the post-modern era, new religious movements and sects. In the study the author deals with problems of religious views and practices of the Czech population.
Catherine Magne brought to light in 1994 a previously unknown rhythmical poem on the death of Maieul of Cluny ; unfortunately, because of an defect in editing, it went unnoticed. It is here newly edited from the unique known manuscript (Paris, BnF, lat. 5611). It is very likely that its author was Odilo of Cluny, even if some elements point to Jotsald of Saint-Claude
The Pastoral Singing of the Entrance Antiphons of the Roman Missal: a congregational and artistic experience of biblical singing through the "Povo de Deus" leaflet of the Archdiocese of São Paulo
José Weber, SVD, and Delphim Rezende Porto. Since 2019, their compositions have been published weekly in the liturgical bulletin Povo de Deus em São Paulo by the Archdiocese of São Paulo. Responding to the post-Vatican II appeal—reiterated by various documents of the Brazilian and Latin American episcopate—for full and active participation of the assembly in liturgical singing, the Archdiocesan Liturgical Commission entrusted the composers with the task of creating artistic strategies to enable congregational singing of the Entrance Antiphons from the Roman Missal. These strategies involved inculturating the chants into the urban context of São Paulo, using simple but musically refined melodies that allow for full assembly participation, supported by choir and instruments. This partnership gave rise to the “Pastoral Chant of the Entrance Antiphons” method. Fr. José Weber, now 92, is widely regarded as one of the most influential Catholic composers in Brazil, author of well-known hymns such as “Prova de amor maior não há” and “Eu vim para que todos tenham vida”. He also led the translation of the Psalms for the Liturgy of the Hours and composed the Eucharistic Prayer responses used in Brazil. A former music advisor to the CNBB, Fr. Weber pursues an academic degree from the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music in Rome. Delphim, nearly three decades younger, holds a doctorate in music from the University of São Paulo and an international academic experience as a visiting scholar at Columbia University of NYC. A layman, husband, and father of two, he has developed pastoral and artistic experience in Brazil, Italy, and the United States. Appointed by Cardinal Odilo Pedro Scherer, he has led the Cathedral’s music ministry since 2019, working alongside Fathers Luiz Baronto and Helmo Faccioli to promote biblical liturgical chant. This thesis aims to document the creative process and implementation of the Entrance Antiphon project as a living expression of the people’s sung prayer, embodying the vision of the Second Vatican Council and a renewed ecclesiology in which liturgical music reveals the Church as a prophetic and priestly peopl
A case-control study on the relationship between HDL2b and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in Chinese type 2 diabetic patients
Background: It has been shown that low concentrations of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) are associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). HDL2b, a major subfraction of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), is more significantly correlated with coronary heart disease (CHD) compared with total HDL. In this study, we analysed HDL2b in a cohort of Chinese T2DM subjects with or without NAFLD. Methods: A highly sensitive and reliable microfluidic chip method was adopted to measure HDL2b. In total, 48 T2DM patients with NAFLD diagnosed by a B-ultrasound were enrolled from our Beijing Community Pre-Diabetes (BCPD) study cohort. A total of 48 age and gender matched diabetic controls without NAFLD were selected from the same population. Results: Clinical characteristics and serum biochemical analyses demonstrated a significantly increased body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistant index (HOMA-IR), total cholesterol (TC), and triglyceride (TG) concentrations in the NAFLD group. However, the concentrations of HDL2b and its ratio to total HDL in NAFLD patients was decreased, compared with controls (p<0.01). Significantly increased concentrations of high sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) (p<0.01) were also found. Multifactor logistic regression analysis showed that BMI and TG were the predominant risk factors for fatty liver, while HDL2b was a protective factor. Conclusions: T2DM patients with NAFLD have characteristics including obesity, marked insulin resistance, high TG, high hs-CRP, low HDL2b and a low HDL2b ratio to total HDL. These factors may increase the incidence of atherosclerosis as well as the risk of CHD. Clin Chem Lab Med 2009;47:1067–72.Peer Reviewe
The life and works of Osbert of Clare
Osbert of Clare was an English monastic writer, whose works extended from
the mid-1120s to the mid-1150s. His Latin hagiography reflects a deep admiration for
Anglo-Saxon saints and spirituality, while his letters provide a personal perspective
on his turbulent career. As prior of Westminster Abbey, Osbert of Clare worked to
strengthen the rights and prestige of his monastery. His production of forged or
altered charters makes him one of England's most prolific medieval forgers. At times
his passion for reform put him at odds with his abbots, and he was sent into exile
under both Abbot Herbert (1121-c.1136) and Abbot Gervase (1138-c.1157). Also
Osbert, as one of the first proponents of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, wrote
about the feast, worked to legitimize its celebration, and provided us with the only
significant narration of its introduction to England.
This thesis is divided into two sections. The first section is principally
historical and the second is principally literary. In the first section, I provide an
overview of Osbert of Clare's career and examine in greater detail two of his most
significant undertaking: his promotion of Westminster Abbey and his attempted
canonization of Edward the Confessor. In the second section, I give a philological
study of Osbert Latin style and examine themes that nm throughout his writings, such
as virginity, exile and kingship. Osbert's promotion of the feast of the Immaculate
Conception is included in the second section of the thesis because of its ties to the
themes of virginity and femininity within his writings. There are also two appendices:
the first is a survey of the extant manuscripts of Osbert's writings, and the second is
an edition of Osbert's unpublished Life of St Ethelbert from Gotha,
