'Spindrift' on the CD 'Quest'
My composition 'Spindrift' for solo harp has been recorded by American harpist Elisabeth Remy Johnson on her new CD entitled ‘Quest’. This research project centres on the study and presentation (through recordings) of the work of female composers for harp dating from the nineteenth century to the present day. Johnson’s performance of 'Spindrift' represents a new interpretation of my composition in an entirely new context as part of a historical lineage of composers. The piece 'Spindrift' aims to explore new resonances on the harp and the original voice of the composition is highlighted by contrast with the particular selection of pieces on the CD

Author Co-Citation Analysis (ACA): a powerful tool for representing implicit knowledge of scholar knowledge workers
In the last decade, knowledge has emerged as one of the most important and valuable organizational assets. Gradually this importance caused to emergence of new discipline entitled ―knowledge management‖. However one of the major challenges of knowledge management is conversion implicit or tacit knowledge to explicit knowledge. Thus Making knowledge visible so that it can be better accessed, discussed, valued or generally managed is a long-standing objective in knowledge management. Accordingly in this paper author co- citation analysis (ACA) will be proposed as an efficient technique of knowledge visualization in academia (Scholar knowledge workers)
Cd-regulated gene expression in Datura innoxia
The effects of Cd on the expression of specific proteins and transcripts have been examined in Cd-resistant (Cd300) and Cd-sensitive cultures of Datura innoxia. 2D PAGE analysis of the soluble fraction of D. innoxia protein proved problematic. Proteins precipitated on the surface of lEF gels. This was overcome by loading the samples in the gel mixture prior to polymerisation. Polymerisation of gels containing protein extracted from Cd-exposed cells only occurred when PCs, Cd and other components were resolved from the proteins eluting in the void volume following fractionation by gel filtration chromatography (Sephadex G50). Two peptides, designated Cd-1 and Cd-2, were detected in the Cd300 cells only after exposure to Cd. Cd-1 and Cd-2 were also both detected following exposure of the Cd300 cells to 125 piM Cu or Zn, or HS (42 ˚C 4 h). Neither Cd-1 nor Cd-2 were observed in protein extracts from WDI cells exposed to 125 μM Cd for 8 h. Both Cd-1 and Cd-2 proved refractory to Edman degradation while the N-terminal 30 amino acids of a third, constitutively expressed protein, designated Protein-3, were determined using equivalent procedures. This protein showed sequence similarity to PR proteins. Although cleavage of Cd-1 and Cd-2 generated polypeptides which were not terminally blocked, no sequence information was obtained from these polypeptides, even following purification using standard techniques. Oligonucleotide primers designed from the amino acid sequence of Protein-3 were successfully used to amplify, from cDNA, a fragment which was cloned, sequenced and shown to encode the characterised protein. A longer fragment was also amplified from cDNA by RACE PGR. However, this product was not cloned. In order to identify cDNA sequences encoding Cd-1 and Cd-2 an expression cDNA library was prepared and antibodies raised against the two peptides. However, no antigenicity could be detected when antisera raised against Cd-1 or Cd-2, or the purified IgG fractions, were used to probe western blots. The XZAP cDNA (Cd-exposed) library was "differentially screened" in order to isolate clones corresponding to Cd-induced genes. This led to the isolation of two Cd- induced clones designated Cd-6 (949 bp) and Cd-8 (659 bp). Both clones hybridised to transcripts of approximately 900 bp. Transcripts were also detected in RNA samples extracted from D. innoxia exposed to HS (42 ˚C 4 h), however no transcripts were detected in WDI cells exposed to Cd. Southern blots revealed hybridisation to multiple bands, possibly indicating the presence of a gene family. A motif, C-C-X-C-C, found in the a-domain of metallothioneins, was identified in Cd-6. This may represent a putative metal binding site in Cd-6
Low training volume adaptive processing in HF skywave radar
Adaptive processing in the HF radar environment suffers from the paucity of appropriate training data relative to the dimension of the required spatial filters. We review the applicability of a number of reduced-rank/reduced-order adaptive filtering methods to HF radar and point out the need for several key developments. These developments including properly normalized likelihood ratio for under-sampled scenarios, parametric order estimation based on minimization of both deterministic and stochastic losses, and application of time-varying autoregressive (TVAR) parametric models to the spatially and temporally varying HF radar case.Ben A. An annotated catalogue of selected works for clarinet by South African composers
The dissertation consists of an annotated catalogue of nineteen selected works for clarinet by South African composers. These are presented in chronological order, based on the year of composition. A short biographyof the composer is given before the work is discussed. Of the analysed works, all those for solo clarinet or for clarinet and piano have been graded. A thesis of a similar nature, written in 1989 by L.A. Hartshorne, entitled ""The Compositions for Clarinet by South African Composers"", contains details of twenty-four works written between 1928 and circa 1981. The majority of the compositions analysed in the current dissertation were written from around 1981 onwards, and to some extent, therefore, this research could be seen as complementary to the information contained in the aforementioned thesis. An addendum lists all the South African works featuring solo clarinet that the author was able to trace. These include solo works, cham ber works for up to nineteen instruments and concerto-type works with strings or orchestra
LAULUJA JA RUKOUKSIA HARTAISIIN HETKIIN : CD-levy, Sielunhoidollinen työväline
TIIVISTELMÄ
Johnson, Katriina. Lauluja ja rukouksia hartaisiin hetkiin CD-levy. Sielunhoidollinen työväline. Syksy 2013, 43 s., CD tallenne, 3 liitettä. Diakonia-ammattikorkeakoulu, Sosiaalialan koulutusohjelma, Diakonisen sosiaalityön suuntautumisvaihtoehto, sosionomi (AMK) + diakonian (diakoni) virkakelpoisuus.
Sielunhoidollisessa viitekehyksessä hartaus-cd:n käyttö on havaittavissa tärkeäksi lähestymisen mahdollisuudeksi sellaisiin asioihin, joita ehkä muuten on vaikea lähestyä.

Johnson, Katriina Songs and Prayers for Devotional Moments CD-record, a Tool for Soul Caretaking. 43p., CD + 3 appendices. Language: Finnish. Pori, Autumn 2013. Diaconia University of Applied Sciences. Degree Programme in Social Services, Option in Diaconal Social Work. Degree: Bachelor of Social Services + Deacon.
The purpose of this thesis was to create a product, a devotional CD for soul caretaking. Through prayer and music the listeners may reflect their thoughts before God either alone or in a group. The theoretical basis of this thesis concerning the practical use of music and prayer for reflection of thoughts and the soul caretaking is based on many different sources among which the Handbook of Church Music. Feedback was collected by conversations and 27 questionnaires responded by different age groups who listened to the record. The responses were analysed using content analysis for this report which together with the CD form this thesis.
According to the theoretical basis of the report, through music and prayer it is possible to meet the deep inner longings, needs and wounds people have. In the framework of soul caretaking, the use of CD is clearly important for making it possible to approach issues which otherwise may be difficult to address. Through music and prayer it is possible to care for people from a secure distance in issues that may be painful to talk about. According to the Bible, music relates to human’s personal experience such as joy and sorrow. Through music a person can express his or her faith either by himself or herself or in the divine service and as praise to God. Music can also open a channel for man to hear God.
The responses showed how the majority felt about using the devotional CD. The devotion brought peace and comfort. Both the private and collective use was seen as appropriate in supporting caretaking of the soul. The prayers in the CD impressed the listeners the most.
Soul caretaking within social and church social work seem to need prayers and spiritual music and also this CD. The CD devotional could be further developed to meet with people’s different needs in the future. Along with this thesis, thoughts came up about possibilities to make for instance, a devotional CD compiled solely hymns, a devotional CD in the English language or a devotional CD focusing especially on children.

Human neutrophil clearance of bacterial pathogens triggers anti-microbial gamma delta T cell responses in early infection
Human blood Vc9/Vd2 T cells, monocytes and neutrophils share a responsiveness toward inflammatory chemokines and are rapidly recruited to sites of infection. Studying their interaction in vitro and relating these findings to in vivo observations in patients may therefore provide crucial insight into inflammatory events. Our present data demonstrate that Vc9/Vd2 T cells provide potent survival signals resulting in neutrophil activation and the release of the neutrophil chemoattractant CXCL8 (IL-8). In turn, Vc9/Vd2 T cells readily respond to neutrophils harboring phagocytosed bacteria, as evidenced by expression of CD69, interferon (IFN)-c and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-a. This response is dependent on the ability of these bacteria to produce the microbial metabolite (E)-4-hydroxy-3-methyl-but-2-enyl pyrophosphate (HMB-PP), requires cell-cell contact of Vc9/Vd2 T cells with accessory monocytes through lymphocyte function-associated antigen-1 (LFA-1), and results in a TNF-a dependent proliferation of Vc9/Vd2 T cells. The antibiotic fosmidomycin, which targets the HMB-PP biosynthesis pathway, not only has a direct antibacterial effect on most HMB-PP producing bacteria but also possesses rapid anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting cd T cell responses in vitro. Patients with acute peritoneal-dialysis (PD)-associated bacterial peritonitis – characterized by an excessive influx of neutrophils and monocytes into the peritoneal cavity – show a selective activation of local Vc9/Vd2 T cells by HMB-PP producing but not by HMB-PP deficient bacterial pathogens. The cd T celldriven perpetuation of inflammatory responses during acute peritonitis is associated with elevated peritoneal levels of cd T cells and TNF-a and detrimental clinical outcomes in infections caused by HMB-PP positive microorganisms. Taken together, our findings indicate a direct link between invading pathogens, neutrophils, monocytes and microbe-responsive cd T cells in early infection and suggest novel diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.Martin S.
