    Do organizations really co-evolve? Problematizing co-evolutionary change in management and organization studies

    This conceptual article discusses and, from some aspects, also problematizes the state-of-the-art regarding co-evolutionary research in Management and Organization Studies (MOS). Analyzing 76 characteristic studies published since 2000, we address three simple, significant questions: What co-evolves? What causal relationships are considered? What are the theoretical processes? The motivation behind our contribution is twofold: on the one hand, the turn of the century witnessed the remarkable growth of inquiries which, at face value, have claimed to be “co-evolutionary”; but, on the other hand, specific analyses about where this fast-growing meta-theoretical perspective on social change is now, and where it could move towards in the future, are still missing in MOS. Our study reveals increasing heterogeneity in defining what co-evolves and the associated causal relationships. It also reveals the prevailing scarcity in explaining what processes substantially characterize co-evolution in MOS. With a view to shaping the future direction of research in this area, we propose four core principles that theoretically set the co-evolutionary project apart

    Half a century of development : Mapping the evolution of a business network

    While Darwinian theory has been applied in industrial network analysis to understand how business firms find and select each other, how business relationships survive, and how stability in buyer–seller relationships can be sustained, a recent review shows that there is a paucity of empirical investigations accounting for the whole set of core principles of ‘General Darwinism’ (GD) (Johansson &amp; Kask, 2013). Accordingly, there is a need to extend the research efforts to all core parts of GD for a more complete analysis of business networks.GD is about explaining adaptive fit, the accumulation of complex designs over time, and the development of variety from a common origin. Most prior research on industrial networks adopting GD is hampered by a one-sided focus on explaining adaptive fit. The result is partial understanding and limited knowledge of the applicability of GD in industrial networks. It also circumscribes the possibility to further develop the theoretical interfaces between network theories and GD. According to Brennan (2006) IMP research could benefit from incorporating elements from “[…] an evolutionary process into dynamics of change within inter-firm relationships and networks.” (p. 829). Furthermore, GD requires auxiliary theory to be useful as a conceptual framing and IMP thinking can provide this.We address the prior theoretical unbalance by drawing on the whole paradigm of (GD) to investigate a case of a production and distribution-network of sporting goods in Sweden. The purpose is to explain the evolution of the network by analysing a longitudinal case over a period of 50 years. We contribute with an analysis of the development of a business network based on the whole set of core principles of GD, extending our knowledge of evolution in networks. It also provides an empirically based application of GD to a specific problem, contributing to the development of auxiliary frameworks to GD, responding to the critique of GD as being largely void of empirical studies.</p

    Evolutionary Branches in Business Research: A Review of Converging Themes

    It have become increasingly discussed in marketing, management and general business journals that ‘Evolutionary’, ‘Darwinian’, and associated labels represent dynamical and contextual-oriented ideas that have relevance in the future for both researchers and practitioners. While these theories come in assorted packages adopted to diverse audiences and inquiries, to bring order it is a warranted issue to address converging themes of relatedness and complementariness among research branchings under these labels. This paper reviews influential but divergent evolutionary branches to the study of organizational change, market dynamics, and industry and firm evolution. Building on this review, the paper address affinity and advocates that abstracted records of Darwinism demonstrate generic principles that could amalgamate the various branches of evolution-theoretic research upon a shared body of underlying commitments and principles. The concluding part considers relevance for future research in the light of standardization/adaptation problems in today’s evolutionary branches of business research.</p

    Rakenduskõrghariduse lõputöö Puidutöötlemise tehnoloogia õppekavalPaljud tööriistade hoidmisseinad on kas liiga kallid või piiravad kasutajal kujundada tööriistade asetust seinal. Autor töötab välja süsteemi, kus on võimalik asetada riiulid või muud tööriistu hoidvad konstruktsioonid vastavalt soovidele. Lõputöö eesmärk on välja töötada 45-kraadise pikikaldseotise kinnitusviisiga tööriistade hoidmissein. Lõputöös kirjeldatakse erinevaid tööriistade hoidmisseina tüüpe. Kirjeldatakse 45-kraadise nurga lahendust, hoidmisseina välimust ning ehitust. Tuuakse välja masinad ja seadmed, mida tööriistade hoidmisseina jaoks kasutatakse. Tehnoloogiliste protsesside all tuuakse välja plaatmaterjali saagimine, tüübliavade puurimine, pikikaldseotiste 45-kraadise nurga alla saagimine, pindade lihvimine. Samuti arvutatakse välja materjalikulu ning hind. Tööriistade hoidmissein valmistatakse vineerist ning kinnitusvahenditeks kasutatakse tüübleid ning kruve. Kokku on detaile 34 tükki. Lõputöö uurimise käigus valitakse välja tööriistade hoidmisseina valmistamise jaoks kõige sobilikumad seadmed ning kinnitusvahendid.Many tool holding walls are too expensive or restrict the positioning of the tools on the wall. The author of this thesis comes up with a system that allows the user to organize and position their tool holders or other constructional holders as they wish. The final purpose is to develop a 45-degree angle cleat for tool holders on the wall. The thesis describes a 45-degree angle cleat solution and also the appearance and construction of the tool holding wall. Author brings out the machines that are used in the process. In the technological processes the author describes cutting the plywood, dowel boring, sawing the 45- degree angle cleat, polishing the surfaces and so on. The author also calculates the cost of the material. The cleat wall is made out of plywood and fastened with dowels and wood screws. All together there are 34 details. After a thorough research, the author chooses best machinery and fasteners

    Business mating : when start-ups get it right

    The importance of forming business relationships is critical for the prosperity of startups; still, few studies have examined how conditions inside and around the start-uptogether lead to business mating – occurrence of a new business relationship. Toclarify the importance of proper fit among management style and invention featuresfor high mating chances, this paper tackles this need by taking a configurationalapproach. We use qualitative comparison analysis (QCA) to analyze case studies from16 invention-based start-ups seeking marketing partners. Findings indicate differentsolutions leading to high chances of forming business relationships. This studycontributes with a typology to the business relationship and start-up literature, as wellas discusses future directions to the emerging sub-domain of business mating research
