    Community of non-belonging, bodies for non-philosophy: interncultural performance and a sense of coexistence

    This dissertation studies music and stage performances led by contemporary Japanese minority groups, primarily Ainu activists, from three theoretical perspectives: 1. Politics of representation, 2. The body and materiality, and 3. Philosophy of difference. Each perspective informs each chapter’s study of the soundscape and performance produced in lieu of verbal political negotiation. Posed as a project in performance studies and critical race theory, the dissertation analyzes cultural and political contexts of each performance as well as affect of the impact of performance. By addressing political situations and history minority populations in Japan, and especially since most of the chapters address the issues of contemporary Ainu indigenous struggles, this project necessarily takes postcolonial and feminist approaches that criticize Japanese imperialism, colonialism, and ideological products of other disciplinary forms of nation-building, such as the social hierarchies based on race and gender. The performances introduced in this dissertation themselves, however, take remarkably positive approaches to conceiving differences of the bodies. Rather than reverting to traditional identity politics, their performance activism seeks a new way for the various bodies and sensations to occupy shared spaces. Thus by examining their inclusive politics that is marked by avoidance of political discussions and focus on the sound elements and music sensations to activate a space of coexistence, this dissertation explores how music and bodily sensations allow us to conceive new modes of coexistence by different bodies of people. Another question this dissertation pursues is how to conceive materiality of the body while many gender and cultural studies have studied the body as signs and symbols of identity, and not a corporeal substance. By aligning with the recent theoretical movement that focuses on the material body, this dissertation engages in theorization of the body that leverages innovative conceptualizations of living with others. Finally, the dissertation proposes the concept of “Transnational Indigeneity,” an indigenous theorization that locates indigeneity outside and beyond national and racial borders and critiques such imperial exclusions and markings of bodies and the earth.     ABSTRACTObjectives: The objectives of this research were to study antioxidant activities from various extracts of three organs of makrut lime (Citrus hystrix)using two methods of antioxidant assays, which were 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and cupric ion reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC);and correlation of total flavonoid, phenolic, and carotenoid content in various extracts of three organs of makrut lime with IC50 of DPPH antioxidantactivities and EC50 of CUPRAC capacities.Methods: Extraction was performed by reflux apparatus using different polarity solvents. The extracts were evaporated using rotary evaporator.Antioxidant capacities were tested using DPPH and CUPRAC assays. Determination of total phenolic, flavonoid and carotenoid content performed byultraviolet-visible and their correlation with IC50 of DPPH scavenging activities and EC50 of CUPRAC capacities were analyzed by Pearson\u27s method.Results: Ethyl acetate stem extract of makrut lime (ST2) had the lowest IC50 of DPPH scavenging activity 0.6 μg/ml and the lowest EC50 of CUPRACcapacity 123 μg/ml. N-hexane stem extract of makrut lime (ST1) had the highest total flavonoid content (8.7 g QE/100 g), ethyl acetate stem extract(ST2) contained the highest total phenolic content (TPC) (8.3 g gallic acid equivalent /100 g and total carotenoid content (1.8 g BE/100 g).Conclusions: There was negatively high correlation between TPC in peel and stem extracts of makrut lime with their IC50 of DPPH scavenging activity.EC50 of CUPRAC capacity of leaves, peel and stem extracts of makrut lime had negative and high correlation with their total flavonoid and carotenoidcontent.     Stress measurement in the iron oxide scale formed on pure Fe during isothermal transformation by in situ high-temperature X-ray diffraction

    The stress development in the iron oxide scale formed on pure Fe during isothermal oxidation at 700 degrees C followed by isothermal transformation at 500 or 380 degrees C was measured by in situ high-temperature X-ray diffraction with the sin(2)psi method. The eutectoid transformation resulted in compressive stress generation in the Fe3O4 and Fe in the eutectoid structure. This compressive stress was relaxed during the isothermal heat treatment after the eutectoid reaction. The stress generation was ascribed primarily to volume changes associated with the oxidation and/or reduction of the iron oxide at the interfaces, Fe3O4 precipitation, and the eutectoid reaction

    Solarium species accumulate a variety of secondary metabolites in their trichomes, and it is well known that acyl sugars are specialized metabolites secreted by the trichomes. However, very few reports provide detailed information on the chemical structure of polyacylated glucose derivatives, due to the alpha and beta isomerization that can occur at the C-1 position. In this study, a strategy was established to isolate polyacylated glucose derivatives. According to the developed strategy, hydroxy groups were derivatized to a benzyloxy group using TriBOT. After isolation of the compounds in pure form and deprotection of the benzyloxy group, the chemical structures of pennelliisides A-C were determined as 2,3,4-O-triisobutyryl-D-glucose, 3-O-(8-methylnonanoyl)-2,4-O-diisobutyryl-D-glucose, and 3-O-decanoyl-2,4-O-diisobutyryl-D-glucose, respectively. Structural elucidation was performed using spectroscopic techniques, including 1D and 2D NMR, FD-MS, and GC-MS. It was also found that the fatty acid moiety contributes to the allelopathic properties of the isolated compounds

    Involvement of Monocarboxylate Transporter 4 Expression in Statin-Induced Cytotoxicity

    Statins, 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase inhibitors, are the most widely used cholesterol-lowering agents for prevention of obstructive cardiovascular events. However, statins can cause a variety of skeletal muscle problems, and exercise leads to an increase in statin-induced muscle injury. Exercise induces the protein content of monocarboxylate transporter 4 (MCT4), which is expressed strongly in skeletal muscle and is thought to play a major role in the transport of metabolically important monocarboxylates such as L-lactate. We previously reported that alpha-cyano-4-hydroxycinnamate, an MCT4 inhibitor, increased the inhibition of growth of RD cells, a prototypic embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma cell line (an RD cell line), as a model of in vitro skeletal muscle, induced by a statin. However, it is unclear whether statin-induced RD cell cytotoxicity is associated with MCT4 expression. We, therefore, examined the relationship between statin-induced cytotoxicity and MCT4 expression in RD cells. Atorvastatin reduced the number of viable cells and upregulated MCT4, but not MCT1, mRNA level in a concentration-dependent manner. MCT4 knockdown suppressed atorvastatin-, simvastatin-, and fluvastatin-induced reduction of cell viability and apoptosis compared with negative controletreated cells.     Genotoxicity evaluation of alpha-linolenic acid-diacylglycerol oil

    AbstractThe alpha-linolenic acid (ALA)-diacylglycerol (DAG) oil is an edible oil enriched with DAG (>80%) and ALA (>50%). Although DAG oil, which mainly consists of oleic and linoleic acids has no genotoxic concerns, the fatty acid composition could affect the chemical property of DAG. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the genotoxicity of ALA-DAG oil using standard genotoxicity tests in accordance with the OECD guidelines. ALA-DAG oil showed negative results in the bacterial reverse mutation test (Ames test) and in vitro micronucleus test in cultured Chinese hamster lung cells with and without metabolic activation, and in the in vivo bone marrow micronucleus test in mice. Our results did not show any genotoxicity, suggesting that the fatty acid composition had no deleterious effects. We conclude that ALA-DAG oil had no genotoxicity concerns under the testing conditions

    A novel stimulating electrode attachment method designed to maintain electromyography-based neuromuscular monitoring detectability during laparoscopic surgery: a single-center randomized, double-blind, controlled pilot study

    Nagasaki University (長崎大学)博士(医学)Purpose: We evaluated the electromyography (EMG)-based neuromuscular monitoring detectability of our novel stimulating electrode attachment method compared to the original Nihon–Kohden (Tokyo, Japan) attachment method. Methods: This single-center randomized, double-blind, controlled pilot study enrolled 32 patients aged≥18 years, undergoing scheduled laparoscopic surgery. The EMG electrode NM-345Y™ was attached to one forearm using the Nihon–Kohden method (Pattern N–K) and the other forearm using our novel method (Pattern Cross). The allocation to each attachment method was determined post-randomization. In Pattern Cross, the NM-345Y™ was attached such that the line connecting the anode and cathode crosses the ulnar nerve. Patients received 0.9 mg/kg rocuronium after calibration with the forearm in 90-degree supination. Following tracheal intubation, the forearm was positioned in 0-degree pronation. Intraoperatively, 0.2 mg/kg rocuronium was administered if the train-of-four (TOF) count one persisted for 1 min on either side. Post-surgery, the forearm position was returned to 90-degree supination, and rocuronium was antagonized with sugammadex. TOF and post-tetanic count (PTC) were simultaneously measured bilaterally every 15 s and 5 min, respectively, from post-calibration to tracheal extubation. Results: The time to frst PTC appearance was signifcantly shorter by 33 min in the Pattern Cross group than in the Pattern N–K group (95% Confdence interval: 1–66, p=0.043). Following sugammadex administration, TOF ratios≥0.9 were achieved in 72% of patients in the Pattern N–K group and 97% of those in the Pattern Cross group (p=0.025).     Management of tracheostomy in COVID-19 patients : The Japanese experience

    Objective: Involvement in the tracheostomy procedure for COVID-19 patients can lead to a feeling of fear in medical staff. To address concerns over infection, we gathered and analyzed experiences with tracheostomy in the COVID-19 patient population from all over Japan. Methods: The data for health-care workers involved in tracheostomies for COVID-19-infected patients were gathered from academic medical centers or their affiliated hospitals from all over Japan. Results: Tracheostomies have been performed in 35 COVID-19 patients with a total of 91 surgeons, 49 anesthesiologists, and 49 surgical staff members involved. Twenty-eight (80%) patients underwent surgery more than 22 days after the development of COVID-19-related symptoms (11: 22-28 days and 17: >= 29 days). Thirty (85.7%) patients underwent surgery >= 15 days after intubation (14: 15-21 days, 6: 22-28 days, and 10: >= 29 days). Among the total of 189 health-care workers involved in the tracheostomy procedures, 25 used a powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR) and 164 used a N95 mask and eye protection. As a result, no transmission to staff occurred during the 2 weeks of follow-up after surgery. Conclusion: No one involved in tracheostomy procedures were found to have been infected with COVID-19 in this Japanese study. The reason is thought to be that the timing of the surgery was quite late after the infections, and the surgery was performed using appropriate PPE and surgical procedure. The indications for and timing of tracheostomy for severe COVID-19 patients should be decided through multidisciplinary discussion. (c) 2021 Oto-Rhino-Laryngological Society of Japan Inc.
