Enriching the French romance: Pauline Viardot-Garcia’s early cosmopolitan songs (1838-1850)
The development of the sentimental romance of the 1830s and 1840s into the more sophisticated genre of song known as mélodie is often linked to Gabriel Fauré and Henri Duparc’s early songs. In his seminal study, La mélodie française de Berlioz à Duparc, Frits Noske did much to correct this limited model by discussing the works of composers such as Charles Gounod, Hector Berlioz, Hyppolyte Monpou, and Louis Niedermeyer. The author, however, failed to consider the early songs of the influential French mezzo-soprano of Spanish origins, Pauline Viardot-Garcia (1821-1910). These compositions, close to thirty songs in French, German, Italian and Spanish, reflect the scope of her international operatic career and her facility to absorb different languages, musical styles, and cultures. Investigating the genesis of the early songs and analyzing and contextualizing them are key goals of the present dissertation. I intend to demonstrate through the examination of primary source material that the construction by influential contemporaries such as George Sand, Théophile Gautier, Alfred de Musset, and Franz Liszt of Viardot-Garcia’s personality as cosmopolitan, versatile, and exotic qualified her in the eyes of the Romantic generation as a valid representative of the Other and thus a legitimate creator of a wide variety of musical styles. In particular, the consecration of young Viardot-Garcia’s fascinating musical personality in George Sand’s influential novel Consuelo (1842) determined the course and objectives of her career both as singer and composer during the 1840s. Through the publication of her two initial song albums, Viardot-Garcia contributed to the modification of expectations surrounding the typical French romance of the 1840s. Viardot-Garcia modernized its style by introducing into it foreign musical resources, thus liberating it from the formal regularity and musical weakness, which limited its expressive possibilities. The high quality of these publications in combination with the composer’s international fame pushed them into the vanguard of the revitalization tendency of French art song. Just as Berlioz and Gounod have been commonly embraced from the time of Ravel to our day as the fathers of French mélodie, Viardot-Garcia may now receive her own accolade as the mother of French mélodie.Ph. Angélica Freitas\u27 lyrical-cyborg: googling to simulate
This paper reflects on the imbrication between human and machine in the literary making. The series 3 poemas com auxílio do google, by the poet Angélica Freitas, raised the idea that will be developed here. The author used Google searches to “transcribe” the results of such researches as poetical creations. In doing this, she problematizes the poetic creation with a lyrical-self transmuted into a lyric-cyborg. In this paper, through the analysis of the poems and bearing in mind the importance of the authorial dimension, we conceive the literary making as a simulation of discourses present in our society, a poetic power that problematizes literary creation and the political place of contemporary poetry

This paper has as its object of analysis two works by the Argentine author María Angélica Bosco (1909-2006): La muerte baja en el ascensor (1954/5) and La muerte soborna a Pandora (1956). They have been considered from a literary perspective of pointing out the connections between her literary production and her poetics and a linguistic perspective in the search for evidence of a "feminine writing" in a genre in which male writers predominate. The poetics has been reconstructed from diverse epitexts and metatexts, especially interviews and journalistic articles, and its concretion is analyzed in these two novels by the author who, by cultivating the detective genre, differentiated herself from other contemporary local women writers.
The objectives were oriented to consider a novel taken from the extensive work of this author that has been brought to the present day by Ricardo Piglia in his collection "Serie del Recienvenido" (2013); to describe the poetic relationship between author and literary production and, finally, to notice the gravitation of female gender issues in her police narrative. The methodological task consisted mainly in a heuristic instance of analysis of the literary discourse and the different epitexts and metatexts that contain her authorial poetics and the representations of her figure collected by the specialized journalism.
An infinite loop space structure for K-theory of bimonoidal categories
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mathematics, 2010.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Cataloged from student-submitted PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (p. 63-64).In recent work of Baas-Dundas-Richter-Rognes, the authors introduce the notion of the K- theory of a bimonoidal category R, and show that it is equivalent to the algebraic K-theory space of the ring spectrum KR. In this thesis we show that K(R) is the group completion of the classifying space of the 2-category ModR of modules over R, and show that ModR is a symmetric monoidal 2-category. We explain how to use this symmetric monoidal structure to produce a [Gamma]-(2-category), which gives an infinite loop space structure on K(R). We show that the equivalence mentioned above is an equivalence of infinite loop spaces.by Angélica María Osorno.Ph.D
