Cruz-Jesus, F., Oliveira, T., & Bação, F. (2018). The global digital divide: evidence and drivers. Journal Of Global Information Management, 26(2), 1-26. DOI: 10.4018/JGIM.2018040101This article presents an analysis of the global digital divide, based on data collected from 45 countries, including the ones belonging to the European Union, OECD, Brazil, Russia, India, and China (BRIC). The analysis shows that one factor can explain a large part of the variation in the seven ICT variables used to measure the digital development of countries. This measure is then used with additional variables, which are hypothesised as drivers of the divide for a regression analysis using data from 2015, 2013, and 2011, which reveals economic and educational imbalances between countries, along with some aspects of geography, as drivers of the digital divide. Contrary to the authors' expectations, the English language is not a driver.publishersversionpublishe

Gonçalves, G.; Oliveira, T. & Cruz-Jesus, F. (2018). Understanding individual-level digital divide: Evidence of an African country. Computers in Human Behavior, 87, 276-291. [advanced online publication on 29 may 2018]. doi: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.chb.2018.05.039 ---%ABS3%Digital divide, the differential in access and use of information and communication technologies (ICT) represents an obstacle to the information society. This study proposes a new theoretical model based on the extended unified theory of acceptance, and use of technology (UTAUT2), Schwartz's basic values and ICT skills to explore the role of values on ICT acceptance and, examine how these factors explain the digital divide. The research model was tested in the context of a sub-Saharan country (Angola). Empirical results suggest that ICT use is mainly influenced by habit, ICT skills, and benevolence.authorsversionpublishe

Lehmann, C., Colaço, A., Cruz-Jesus, F., & Oliveira, T. (2023). The Circular Economy Gap in the European Union: Convergence or Divergence Among Member States? ADVANCED SUSTAINABLE SYSTEMS, 7(12), [2300247]. https://doi.org/10.1002/adsu.202300247In the European Union, the circular economy is gaining relevance to increase competitiveness and promote economic growth while decreasing environmental consequences and primary resource dependency. This study uses factor and cluster analysis to uncover the disparities in the main circular economy dimensions within the European Union 27, covering the years from 2015 to 2019. The results highlight two main circularity dimensions—sustainability and productivity—and three distinct circular economy profiles—optimizers, sustainables, and laggards. Findings suggest that while the European gap in terms of circularity is narrowing regarding productivity, it appears to be widening concerning sustainability. Furthermore, countries have yet to strike a balance between the sustainability and productivity dimensions, meaning additional efforts should be made to achieve more homogeneous progress.authorsversionpublishe

One of the numbers that Brazil has been facing for a long time is a matter of the housing deficit, this factor affects all of them adequately. Thus, it is a study of means that reduce the maximum factor of housing, especially for a poorer population. One way in which it may contribute to a search for more viable construction techniques is a use of adobe building blocks, as this is a low cost no aspect of construction and construction, in which it is done through land and water additive Can contribute to the improvement of the same, as it does not cause problems to the environment, as constructions in methodology are defined as sustainable constructions. These, in turn, exist in many places of much, more, for lack of theoretical knowledge about material and an economic viability that the same presents as productions with this less and less current. With this, the objective of this work is to show qualitatively with a theoretical and practical project using a single-family design of a project that offers a comparative with the ceramic projects, showing a significant saving that the abobe presents to improve the constructive processes of the present time. The research was developed in two parts. Where a bibliographic study was initially carried out on the characteristics of the materials studied and a qualitative study was carried out a survey on the costs of a single-family dwelling produced with masonry of ceramic bricks and blocks of adobe. This study verified an analysis between two materials, verifying this way, that the adobe presented a cost of 3,108.84, while the ceramic blocks reflected a total cost of 4,836.47. This guaranteed a difference of 1,727.63 (one thousand, seven hundred and twenty-seven reais and sixty-three cents). From the work developed it can be concluded that, there is a significant saving on the costs of a social interest housing using adobe.

Springer. https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-030-64861-9_46Social media are probably one of the most influential and disruptive technology of the present times. It is ubiquitous and has the capability to influence virtually every aspect of one’s life while, at the same time, also influence the way firms and public organizations operate and communicate with individuals. Although there is a plethora of studies in the IS literature focused on SM adoption and outcomes, studies hypothesizing positive and negative outcomes together are scarce. We propose a comprehensive research model to shed light on SM positive and negative outcomes, and how these affect one’s happiness. We also explore how personality traits can influence these relationships.authorsversionpublishe

Cruz-Jesus, F., Oliveira, T., & Naranjo, M. (2018). Understanding the adoption of business analytics and intelligence. In Á. Rocha, H. Adeli, L. P. Reis, & S. Costanzo (Eds.), Trends and Advances in Information Systems and Technologies, pp. 1094-1103. (Advances in Intelligent Systems and Computing; Vol. 745). Springer Verlag. DOI: 10.1007/978-3-319-77703-0_106Our work addresses the factors that influence the adoption of business analytics and intelligence (BAI) among firms. Grounded on some of the most prominent adoption models for technological innovations, we developed a conceptual model especially suited for BAI. Based on this we propose an instrument in which relevant hypotheses will be derived and tested by means of statistical analysis. We hope that the findings derived from our analysis may offer important insights for practitioners and researchers regarding the drivers that lead to BAI adoption in firms. Although other studies have already focused on the adoption of technological innovations by firms, research on BAI is scarce, hence the relevancy of our research.authorsversionpublishe

Berthold, M., Cruz-Jesus, F., & Oliveira, T. (2021). A proposed model for Process Mining Adoption: Using a Mixed-Methods Approach. In APSI 2021 Proceedings: 21.ª Conferência da Associação Portuguesa de Sistemas de Informação (CAPSI’2021) 13 a 16 de outubro de 2021, Vila Real e Viseu, Portugal (pp. 1-14). Associação Portuguesa de Sistemas de Informação. https://aisel.aisnet.org/capsi2021/30Driven by digital transformation, Process Mining represents one of the biggest analytical trends in the Software-as-a-Service technology market, providing companies with transparency of their processes in place. As such, there has been little research about what are the factors that influence the decision of companies to adopt Process Mining in their organization. Hence, this study aims on developing a comprehensive research model that sheds light on the most decisive Process Mining adoption drivers among European firms. A Mixed-Method design was applied to ensure a tailored IT adoption model for Process Mining. Based on a qualitative pre-study with expert interviews as well as a thorough literature review about the IT adoption theories of TOE, DOI as well as OIPT we derived the most essential antecedents of Process Mining adoption and proposed to our knowledge the first Process Mining adoption research model on firm-level.publishersversionpublishe

Leveraging the circular economy: Investment and innovation as drivers

Lehmann, C., Cruz-jesus, F., Oliveira, T., & Damásio, B. (2022). Leveraging the circular economy: Investment and innovation as drivers. Journal of Cleaner Production, 360, 1-10. [132146]. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jclepro.2022.132146The circular economy plays a central role in Europe's new agenda for sustainable economic growth. Using Eurostat and United Nations data from 28 European countries pertaining to the years between 2011 and 2017 we identified two underlying dimensions of the circular economy — environmental degradation and resource efficiency. Then, using dynamic panel models we assessed the impact that investment, human capital, innovation, and previous circularity levels have on each dimension of the circular economy identified, comparing their impacts on both. Our substantive findings demonstrate that innovation and investment significantly reduce environmental degradation, whereas only investment is also significant in promoting resource efficiency. Furthermore, our study suggests that circular economy levels have an inter-annual dependence.authorsversionpublishe

This work presents a study about the potential that the physical layer and convergence layer in passive access networks provide for the implementation of strategies to allow monitoring and protection of these networks. Existing alarms and PLOAM (Physical Layer Operations, Administration and Maintenance) messages are identified and characterized with the purpose of motivation of this thesis. Algorithms and procedures for the use of this information are derived together with other information that can be obtained from the physical layer to identify and characterize network problems. This set of rules and analysis are implemented in a ring-tree passive network in order to validate its applicability and interest. Thus, it was possible to analyze the type of failure occurred: service disruption or signal degradation and locate the network section where the fault occurred
