    The contribution of N.F. Filatov the national pediatrics (to the 170 anniversary from the birthday of N.F. Filatov) (1847-1902)

    It was noted that during 25 years of scientific and teaching activity N.F. Filatov has made a significant contribution to the development of world Pediatrics. He is the author of over 70 scientific works, including “a Short textbook of pediatric diseases” (1893), aged 12 editions, and “Clinical lectures” (1900). His monograph “Lectures on acute infectious diseases” (1885) through 4 editions, “Semiotics and diagnosis of childhood diseases” (1890) – 9 editions, it is translated into German, Czech, Italian, Hungarian and French. In the monographs and manuals N.F. Filatov studied many of pokoleniya-pediatricians. He described the infectious disease named Filatov scarlatinal rubella. She was later described by the British physician Duxom; one of the presently used names of the disease – a disease Filatov-Dukes. In the first edition of "Lectures on infectious diseases" N.F. Filatov described is not known until the time of infectious mononucleosis, which he called idiopathic inflammation of the cervical lymphatic glands. The disease is now often called a disease Filatov. In 1895 N.F. Filatov, described an important diagnostic sign of measles is the appearance of catarrhal period of illness 1-2 days before appearance of rash spot grayish-white lesions on the mucosa of lips and cheeks. As was established later, this sign was first described by A.P. Belsky in 1890, then regardless of him F. Filatov, and in 1896 Koplik. In the literature, this symptom is known as spots Belsky-Filatova-Koplik. N.F. Filatov described the pathogenesis of some forms of edema syndrome in children, published works on prolonged afebrile forms of the flu. N.F. Filatov developed a clinical-physiological direction in Pediatrics. He created a large school of domestic pediatricians. Among his students were V.I. Molchanov and G.N. Speransky.</jats:p

    RIBuild: Laboratory based investigations of the materials' water activity and pH relative to mould growth

    This dataset contains measurements of relative humidity and temperature in small test walls, from mycometer test and from measurements of moisture content in materials in the test walls. The objective of the study is to find the causes and conditions that lead to mould growth between a existing wall and installed insulation systems, and to suggest solutions to prevent mould growth.The study examines whether the alkaline environment (pH> 9), which may occur in the adhesive glue joint between the existing wall and the installed insulation is sufficient to prevent mould growth,even if the moisture (water activity (aw)) at the interface exceeds the levels (aw> 0.75) commonly considered critical for mould growth. The dataset also contains extensive photo documentation of preparations and carrying out the experiments.     In this paper, we describe some of the affordances, (the specific enabling features or characteristics), of an enterprise wiki to meet the needs of a developing community of practice. The Social Innovation Network (SInet) is a nascent research network that spans the social sciences, education and commerce at the University of Wollongong. It will use the enterprise wiki software Confluence to assist in the development of communities of practice across its groups and subgroups.     Macrosiphum mentzeliae Wilson (Figs. 13–24) Macrosiphum mentzeliae, Wilson 1915: 99, Gillette and Palmer 1934: 188, Palmer 1952: 316, Eastop and Hille Ris Lambers 1976: 260, Smith and Parron 1978: 184, Remaudière, and Remaudière 1997: 115, Blackman and Eastop 2006: 1212. Biology and distribution.—This aphid was described by Wilson (1915) based on a single sample of apterae and alatae sent to him from Monclova, Mexico, collected on “ Mentzelia ” in November of 1909. Subsequently, Palmer (1952) recorded collecting it on “ Mentzelia sp.,” including oviparae and alate males, indicating a monoecious life cycle. Her specimens were from Colo- rado and Utah and she reported that it was “rather common.” The first au- thor has also found it to be common across western U.S.A. Blackman and Eastop (2019) report the host plant as “ Mentzelia aspera (= M. albicaulis), and possibly other Mentzelia spp.” (The ref- erence to Mentzelia albicaulis (Douglas) Douglas ex Torr. & A. Gray being a synonym of Mentzelia aspera L. is apparently based on information provided by The Plant List (2019) but seems to conflict with accepted nomenclature. The second author consulted various online resources and a published checklist (Villaseñor 2016) and could not find confirmation of this synonymy and we therefore use the name M. albicaulis hereafter.) Available specimens, all in the ASJ collection, have been collected from M. albicaulis, Mentzelia laevicaulis (Douglas) Torrey & A. Gray, and “ Mentzelia.” At least one of these samples was collected on a plant other than M. albicaulis and M. laevicaulis – a sample from near Socorro, New Mexico on a tall Mentzelia with large white flowers. It seems, therefore, that M. mentzeliae has a wide host range within Mentzelia. This aphid is unusual in that it lives in a wide range of habitat types and exists across a huge geographical area. The first author has collected it in desert habitats such as central New Mexico and central Washington, but also on lower slopes of forested mountains in central Oregon, especially in areas disturbed by road-building and wild fire, and on Douglas Pass in western Colorado at 2,500 m elevation. The host plants of M. mentzeliae in Washington and Oregon (M. albicaulis and M. laevicaulis) are drought tolerant and actively grow through the hottest and driest parts of the year. Unlike many aphids, which reproduce little or not at all during hot summer conditions and are mostly found on host plants in moderate microclimates, M. mentzeliae can often be found on M. laevicaulis mid-summer growing in southfacing road-cuts in the hottest of localities such as Franklin County, Washington (see Material examined, below). Our funda- trices of M. mentzeliae were all collected in late March on warm sandy slopes, indicating egg hatch must have occurred in late February or early March, earlier than most aphids in these localities. The known distribution of M. mentzeliae includes Mexico at least as far south and east as Monclova (Coahuila state), north to central Washington. Its host plants M. albicaulis and M. laevicaulis both have been recorded from Canada (eFloras 2019), indicating that M. mentzeliae may exist in western Canada as well. Remarks.—We offer new illustrations (Figs. 13–24) and measurements (Table 2) for M. mentzeliae to add to the contributions of Wilson (1915) and Palmer (1952), easing comparison of this and similar species. We also add the first measurements of the fundatrix. Macrosiphum mentzeliae can be separated from M. glawatz and M. gaurae as explained above. Like M. glawatz, M. mentzeliae shares important features with M. garyreed. The two species are easily distinguished by the presence of robust spinules ventro-laterally on a.s. I of M. mentzeliae (absent in M. garyreed), and the usual presence of prominent lateral tubercles in M. garyreed (very small or absent in M. mentzeliae). The u.r.s./ metatarsal II ratios overlap for these two species, but the u.r.s. length in M. garyreed is more than 190 µm versus 142– 186 µm in M. mentzeliae. Above we mentioned that a feature shared by M. mentzeliae, M. gaurae, and M. glawatz is “moderate length antennae.” By this we mean a general impression made by the species in life and on slides. We can illustrate this by comparison with one other species in North America with a long u.r.s. and membranous tergum in apterae: Macrosiphum aetheocornum Smith and Knowlton, which feeds on wild Geranium spp. in western North America. The u.r.s./metatarsal II ratio in this species is similar to M. mentzeliae and the others mentioned above, but M. aetheocornum has longer antennae, segment by segment (as given for apterae by Palmer 1952): a.s. III 850–1020 µm, a.s. IV 650–750 µm, a.s. V 580–690 µm, versus a.s. III 534–822 µm, a.s. IV 348–636 µm, a.s. V 324–570 µm in M. mentzeliae (and almost identical ranges in M. glawatz and M. garyreed).     It's not their job to share content': a case study of the role of senior students in adapting teaching materials as open educational resources at the University of Cape Town

    Inspired by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's landmark decision to make its teaching and learning materials freely available to the public as OpenCourseWare (OCW), many other higher education institutions have followed suit sharing resources now more generally referred to as Open Educational Resources (OER). The University of Cape Town (UCT) in South Africa joined the OER movement with the launch of the UCT OpenContent directory in February 2010. While much of the research has focused on the potential value of OER to institutions and to the community at large, less attention has been paid to the complex processes that need to be undertaken to adapt existing materials as OER and specifically the opportunity to engage senior students in this practice. In this article the authors explore the processes that three senior physics students employed in assisting their lecturers to adapt existing materials as OER, the challenges they encountered and the contribution these students made. The findings reveal that the senior physics students report having sufficient time, knowledge of the field and skill in using a range of technological tools that made the OER adaptation process of their lecturers' materials easier. Based on the participating physics lecturers' acceptance of the students' adaptations of their materials, it would seem that the strategy of using senior students to support busy lecturers to adapt existing teaching materials as OER is worth considering

    [[abstract]]Abstract Although educated as a young officer, Moussorgky was completely a musician all his Life. With tragic characteristic, he was the most talented one among "the Russian Five". Mussorgsky composed very few piano works and even fewer orchestral works. His "Pictures at an Exhibition", born in piano form, was not popular until Ravel's orchestral arrangement was performed nearly half century later. This research about "Pictures at an Exhibition", Moussorgsky's most famous work, also one of the author's favorite, is to analyze this work. A literature review was made including the life time of Moussorgsky, the characteristics of his music and the progress of composing "Pictures at an Exhibition". Emphases ". Emphases were also placed upon the painter Hartman, the manusaript and the premiere. Analyses of the work itself including the structure, form, the relation with the pictures, the music language. After a brief introduction of the different arrangements, studies were made regarding Maestro Ravel's orchestral arrangement. The conducting of "Pictures at an Exhibition" was discussed in detailes based on several CDs and LD, live concerts, interviews with conductors, and personal interpentation of the author. Though emphasized on realism, Moussorgsky's colorful fantasy made people experience the natural Rassian spririt through music. With the efforts of so many arrangers and the master work of Ravel, it was proved that how possible and how progressive this piece was. No wonder Moussorgsky was considered as the most master musician of interpretating Russian soul .
