Interview with Jayashree Shivamoggi
Born in the late 1950s, Jayashree Shivamoggi grew up in a small village in the southwest part of India. Her life has been greatly influenced by her father, a skilled engineer who encouraged her to pursue an education and profession in science and technology, a career choice that was rare for young girls in South Asia. After attending private boarding schools, Jay studied at the Karnatak University in India, where she earned her BS in 1980 and MS in Physics in 1982. Through her parents’ arrangement, Jay met with Dr. Bhimsen Shivamoggi, a scientist at the Physical Research Laboratory and an associate professor at the Institute of Mathematical Sciences in India. They married only a few weeks following their first meeting, and after Prof. Bhimsen Shivamoggi joined the University of Central Florida in 1985, Jay also immigrated to the United States and continued her pursue of PhD in Physics, which she earned from UCF in 1996.
Because of the needs for her growing family, Jay could only work as an adjunct instructor at first, but at UCF she took the initiative to establish the Office of External and Competitive Scholarship Advising, which resulted in a record number of awards at the Burnet Honors College. During her tenure, a UCF student, Tyler Fisher, became the first and only Rhodes Scholar from UCF. It is because of this record of professional accomplishments that Jay was appointed the Director of External and Competitive Scholarship at Rollins in 2003. As the founding director, Jay secured funding for the continued operation of the office, developed a sophisticated network of committed faculty to assist in the application process, and single-handedly oversaw scholarship applications of over 80 students annually to prestigious scholarships such as the Rhodes, Truman, and National Science Foundation scholarships. Under her leadership, Rollins has been recognized as one of the top Fulbright producing Institutions for multiple times.
As a visiting lecturer in the Physics Department at Rollins, Jay also taught various courses such as Physics for Scientists and Engineers, Physical Science for Non-Science Majors, and Nuclear Power Arms and War. In addition, Jay has served as a faculty advisor to DESI (South Asian Student Organization), Rollins Cornell/Alfond Scholars, and Rollins Chapter of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. She has also served as a judge of the Nelson Ying Science Competition organized by the Orlando Science Center for high school students in Central Florida, helped Rollins students raise funds for “Making Lives Better” service learning program, and co-led the successful field study trip to Nepal.
Dr. Jayashree Shivamoggi received a Woman of Achievement Award from the Women’s Executive Council of Orlando in 2015, and has been recognized as one of the Most Inspiring Women of Rollins for multiple years. In January 2021, after eighteen years of service, Jay announced her resignation from Rollins to focus on her consultancy enterprise, Dr. Jay’s College & Career Advising

Probiotic properties of the riboflavin producing Lactobacillus fermentum strain isolated from yoghurt sample
The probiotic properties of the riboflavin producing lactic acid bacterium, Lactobacillus fermentum MTCC 8711 were evaluated. The strain was resistant to the acidic environment with the pH of 3.5 and more than 100% survivability of the cells was observed after 4 h. Similarly, 85% survivability was observed in the presence of 0.3% (w/v) bile salts. The strain exhibited β- galactosidase activity by blue colored colony formation in the MRS agar plates with X-gal and IPTG. Further, it was found to be a medium acidifier with a DpH value of 0.96 after 5 h of growth. The strain was also able to reduce the cholesterol up to 50% in the presence of cholesterol and bile salts. Since the strain possesses the basic properties of the probiotics and produces riboflavin, it could be considered as a better starter culture in the fermented food industry. Probiotic properties of the riboflavin producing Lactobacillus fermentum strain isolated from yoghurt sampleS. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
