Feste (e relaciones de fiesta) nella Sardegna del primo Settecento: "un delirio de exorbitante vanidad"
The relaciones de fiesta constitute a significant portion, over the past decades object of critical attention by scholars of various European and American universities, of that production generally identified as paraliterary, and therefore marginalized.
The discovery and subsequent exploitation of these texts is based on the fact that they are real reservoirs from which elements of scientific interest from multiple perspectives can be drawn: for the historian of literature, culture, religious beliefs, popular traditions, history of art, of the editions etc. The essay in question analyzes the Sucinta descripcion de los regozijos (perhaps of Ignacio Paliacho, author of the loa included in the text), published in Cagliari in 1722 for the wedding of Prince Carlo Emanuele. Preliminarily, thanks to investigations conducted in the Archives of State and the Town Council of Cagliari, data relative to the typology of the feasts and of the occasions which determined them, are provided, contributing,in this way, to the positioning of such materials of local origin, in the wider context mentioned above
Marginalidad social y aspiración de medro en las relaciones de sucesos: el caso de "El hijo del verdugo"
Analysis of the news pamphlet El hijo del verdugo highlights the continuation of the debate, even in popular literature, on a crucial issue, namely the desire for upward mobility by members of the lowest echelons of society. The presentation of the narrative in two parts allows the anonymous author to organise the rich and complex material into autonomous narrative units, as in traditional folk literature, and to link its multiple thematic features. Even though the title makes clear the qualities of the protagonist in his unstoppable quest to better himself, the happy ending comes about mainly thanks to his decision to keep the company of good people and to turn a series of coincidences to his advantage, in the same way as the heroes of picaresque novels do, thanks to expedients of dubious morality.
This article investigates a handwritten text in Spanish on the festive celebrations of the canonization of Ignatius of Loyola and Francis Xavier, held in Sassari in 1622. The text is analyzed in the light of the socio-cultural context in which it is inscribed, with particular reference to the Jesuit milieu to which both the initiation of the event and the drafting of the relacion de fiesta can be ascribed. This paper highlights that beyond an apparent loyalty to the events, which are listed following a chronological order and placed on a dual-axis (religious and socio-political) the intention of the anonymous drafter is to create a hierarchy in which he places the munificent benefactors and sponsors of the celebrations. At the same time the author demonstrates the high level of integration achieved by the Society of Jesus in the nearly seventy years of their pedagogical activity in Sassari
Purification by p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA)-affinity chromatography and the functional reconstitution of the nateglinide/H+ cotransport system in the rat intestinal brush-border membrane
(−)-N-(trans-4-Isopropylcyclohexanecarbonyl)-d-phenylalanine (nateglinide) is a novel oral hypoglycemic agent possessing a peptide-type bond and a carboxyl group in its structure. Recently, we have shown that nateglinide transport occurs via the ceftibuten/H+ cotransport system, which is distinct from PepT1, and that the fluorescein/H+ cotransport system is involved in the uptake of nateglinide. The aim of this study was to characterize the functional properties of the intestinal nateglinide transporter. In the first part of this study, we demonstrated that the ceftibuten/H+ cotransport system is identical to the fluorescein/H+ cotransport system. We succeeded in purification of the nateglinide transporter from brush-border membranes of the rat small intestine using p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA)-affinity chromatography. We then investigated the functional properties of the nateglinide transporter using proteoliposomes prepared from the PABA-affinity chromatography elute. We demonstrated that nateglinide, ceftibuten, and fluorescein are transported by the same transporter in the intestine

New gene responsible for para-aminobenzoate biosynthesis
Folate is an essential cofactor in all living cells for one-carbon transfer reactions. para-Aminobenzoate (pABA), a building block of folate, is usually derived from chorismate in the shikimate pathway by reactions of aminodeoxychorismate synthase (PabA and -B) and 4-amino-4-deoxychorismate lyase (PabC). We previously suggested that an alternative pathway for pABA biosynthesis would operate in some microorganisms such as Lactobacillus fermentum and Nitrosomonas europaea since these bacteria showed a prototrophic phenotype to pABA despite the fact that there are no orthologs of pabA, -B, and -C in their genome databases. In this study, a gene of unknown function, NE1434, was obtained from N. europaea by shotgun cloning using a pABA-auxotrophic Escherichia coli mutant (Delta pabABC) as a host. A tracer experiment using [U-C-13(6)]glucose suggested that pABA was de novo synthesized in the transformant An E. coli Delta pabABC Delta aroB mutant carrying the NE1434 gene exhibited a prototrophic phenotype to pABA, suggesting that compounds in the shilrimate pathway including chorismate were not utilized as substrates by NE1434. Moreover, the CT610 gene, an ortholog of NE1434 located in the folate biosynthetic gene cluster in Chlamydia trachomatis, also complemented pABA-auxotrophic E. toll mutants. Taken together, these results suggest that NE1434 and CT610 participate in pABA biosynthesis
Determination of acetylation genotypes using metabolites of caffeine and para aminobenzoic acid, 1987
A large number of drugs and procedures are used to assess acetylator status in humans. However, these methods using test drugs such as isoniazid and sulfamethazine are relatively invasive. Recently, Grant and co-workers (Br. J. Clin. Pharmacol. 17: 459, 1984) developed a less-invasive method that uses caffeine as a test drug for determination of human acetylator phenotype. We sought to confirm the utility of this test using genetically defined inbred Syrian hamsters; homozygous rapid (RR) acetylator (Bio. 87.20), homozygous slow (rr) acetylator (Bio. 82.73/H) and heterozygous rapid (Rr) acetylator (Bio. 87.20 x Bio. 82:73/H Fl) progeny. Each animal was injected with 20 mg/kg of caffeine i.p. and urine was collected at 6 and 24 hours following diuretic (furosemide) priming. The urinary excretion ratio of two caffeine metabolites, 5-acetylamino-6-formylamino-3-methyluracil (AFMU) and 1-methylxanthine (IX) exhibited a trimodal distribution corresponding to acetylator genotype (rr, Rr, RR). Para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) is a substrate which readily distinguishes the three acetylator acetylator genotypes in hamsters. Consequently, we monitored the PABA to acetyl-PABA ratios excreted in the same hamsters to aid in the verification of acetylator genotypes. Acetylator genotype as assigned by the PABA: acetyl-PABA ratio was completely concordant with acetylator genotype as assigned by the AFMU:1X ratio. Since recent evidence has suggested that cimetidine inhibits the microsomal metabolism of caffeine (Br. J. Clin. Pharmacol. 12: 155, 1981), we also investigated the actions of cimetidine on the caffeine test in the inbred hamster. A decrease in the AFMU:1X metabolic ratio was observed after pre-treatment with increasing concentrations of cimetidine. However, non-overlapping acetylator genotype dependent differences were still observed. These results support the validity of the caffeine test and suggest that the trimodal distribution of AFMl:lX reported in human population reflect acetylator genotype
L'Alguer i l'alguerès
This essay is an attempt to describe the Alguerese society in its economic, psychological and cultural aspects, thus contributing to a better understanding of the problems of the Catalan language in this Sardinian city. The author shows how difficult it is to describe the Alguerese people as an ethnic minority, and explains how the language of the Catalan conquerors has survived to the present day as a consequence of stagnant social conditions but also has become endangered in recent decades as a result of the tourism industry and the associated demographic and social upheavals
Assessment of arylamine N-acetyltransferase (NAT1) activity in mononuclear leukocytes of cystic fibrosis patients
The clearance of sulphamethoxazole (SMX), a compound metabolised primarily by the N-acetyltransferase NAT1, is increased in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. We assessed the activity and kinetic properties of NAT1 in lysates of peripheral blood mononuclear leukocytes (MNL) from CF (n = 17) and control (n = 22) subjects using SMX and p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) as test substrates. The Km and Vmax values of both substrates in MNL from CF patients and control subjects were not significantly different. The acetylation of PABA (100 microM) by intact MNL from CF patients (n = 4) was not different from the observed in intact MNL from controls (n = 9) (25 +/- 3 pmol h-1 per 10(6) MNL vs 27 +/- 4 pmol h-1 per 10(6) MNL). These results suggest that there are not systemic changes in this enzyme in CF. The increased metabolic clearance of SMX may therefore be related to factors other than alterations in the level of activity of the N-acetyltransferase NAT1.LR: 20061115; PUBM: Print; JID: 7503323; 150-13-0 (4-Aminobenzoic Acid); 723-46-6 (Sulfamethoxazole); EC 2.3.1.5 (Arylamine N-Acetyltransferase); ppublishSource type: Electronic(1
