Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Diante da relevância da compreensão do importante papel que a sociedade civil possui no processo de adequação das práticas e políticas internas às normas regionais de proteção humana, procura-se, por meio da adoção do método dedutivo e da condução de uma pesquisa qualitativa, exploratória e bibliográfica, evidenciar como os movimentos sociais contribuem para a busca pela melhoria das condições de vida dos cidadãos da região. Por meio da constatação de que as mobilizações sociais, ante sua aptidão de pressionar governos, possibilitam a progressiva construção de espaços públicos destinados a garantir o exercício da cidadania, conclui-se que tais mobilizações, sejam elas de cunho identitário, material, cultural ou simbólico, são de essencial importância para transformações políticas, sociais e culturais no cenário latino-americano, sobretudo no que se refere à tutela de direitos humanos

Get PDFAo defender a necessidade de observância e reconhecimento do outro, bem como de respeito a suas diferenças, a alteridade se mostra como imprescindível para assegurar a convivência conjunta de diferentes nações e a efetiva tutela dos direitos humanos. Ante a constatação da existência de uma fragmentariedade cultural da sociedade global e uma consequente divergência de interpretações no tocante ao conceito de direitos humanos, foi realizada, através da adoção do método dedutivo, uma análise da alteridade, para verificar em que sentido ela promove meios para articular distintas sociedades e culturas no processo de proteção dos direitos humanos para, assim, oferecer respostas mais adequadas aos problemas constitucionais comuns que surgem entre diferentes Estados. Efetuada uma análise das teses do universalismo e relativismo cultural e da proposta de estabelecimento de um diálogo intercultural, verificou-se que a alteridade defendida no âmbito da teoria do transconstitucionalismo se apresenta, hoje, como meio mais propício de superação do embate entre universalistas e relativistas culturais e de efetivação do diálogo intercultural entre distintas sociedades, contribuindo para o respeito à identidade cultural e para o estabelecimento de uma cooperação em matéria de direitos humanos, sem desconsiderar a legitimidade do direito local

No âmbito local, destaca-se que o reconhecimento da identidade cultural dos povos indígenas constitui questão de essencial importância para se assegurar referida diversidade e para o estabelecimento de uma relação harmoniosa entre direitos humanos e o direito costumeiro indígena. Entretanto, diante da tensão existente entre algumas práticas tradicionais indígenas e direitos humanos, denota-se a necessidade de adoção de uma postura dialógica pelos tribunais internacionais e estatais com as comunidades locais, para superar a resistência à aceitação da diversidade cultural indígena. Ante a relevância de se identificar o diálogo como meio para a construção de um universalismo consciente das diferenças, procura-se com esse trabalho delimitar como o diálogo intercultural tem se firmado na América Latina e demonstrar os rumos para a coexistência do direito estatal e internacional com o direito local das comunidades indígenas
COMPLEX SOCIETIES, HUMAN RIGHTS AND COMMUNICATION BETWEEN LEGAL ORDERS: AN ANALYSIS BASED ON THE DOCTRINE OF NIKLAS LUHMANN
Get PDFContemporary global society, marked by its complexity, demands constant contact between different legal systems, considering the permeability of territorial boundaries and the growing interrelationship between social, political, cultural and economic subsystems. In view of the relevance of identifying the reasons inherent to the convergence between the international legal order and the different domestic legal orders, it is sought to delineate, based on Niklas Luhmann\u27s Theory of Systems and through the adoption of the deductive method, in which sense the complexification of social and legal relations implies the indispensability of establishing structures for the communication between such orders, for the protection of human rights. It is concluded that there is a need to establish a coordinated and non-hierarchical interaction between legal systems, as a necessary mechanism for the survival of the different systems and for the best protection of human rights today

Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
