The people behind the papers - Maurício Rocha-Martins and Mariana Silveira.
Retinal ganglion cells connect the retina to the brain, and their degeneration underlies glaucoma, which is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in humans and currently untreatable. Replacement of lost cells could be achieved by in vivo reprogramming of endogenous cells in the retina, a strategy explored by authors of a new paper in Development who focus on a transcription factor renowned for its reprogramming ability in other contexts. We caught up with first author Maurício Rocha-Martins and his former supervisor Mariana Silveira, Professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, to find out more about the story

To Glauber Rocha (2004), “the Cinema Novo is a project that emerges in the politics of hunger, and suffers, for this very reason, all the weaknesses resulting from its existence” (p. 67). The trance, seen as a disease as well as a cure, multiplies its forms: there is the famine trance, capable of producing a communication channel from hungry and exhaustion, the religious trance, forged inside a messianic time, the inebriation trance, which turns an organization dimension into a Dionysian dimension, the music trance, capable of bringing, in its minimal elements, a past into the present, the rustle trance which dismantles the words in a rustling language. Glauber Rocha cinema was interested in wandering lives and deteriorated communication channels. This thesis aims to investigate this trance, in Glauber Rocha, based on the insights produced by Gilles Deleuze (2006) in text called The Modern Political Cinema. According to the author, this cinema has the ability to produce a to become in the images of “a people to come” (DELEUZE, 2006, p. 281). The images that we investigate here are similar as machinations of the withdrawal of a colonial and normative Brazil, reconstructed in the agitation of a vibrant matter (distortions, deformities, shapes, traces of an eternal making and undoing of shapes) created with heterogeneous procedures. As a method, the trance images are classified by three components. The first one, constituted by territorial reasons, is organized in primary encodes level, in the flows of substance. They are light beams, color gradients, film granulation that are brought together in consonance with connective syntheses. The second component, as an inscription channel, is formulated in the interior of trance descriptions, in the procedural narrations and trance narrations, producing recording media that show present and virtual images: mismatches, decentralization, falsifying narrations and trance domains. The last component results from a generalized decoding that makes interconnect fragments of film material. They are phonation, graphics, gestures and sublinguistic materials when associated keep the deterritorializations in states of conjunction. These three components of trance images will be developed according to the interrogations brought by the inhabiting characters: the Singer, the Stutterer, the blind Psychic, the Tyrant, the Messiah
A Comparison of Arabic Numeral Allographs Written by Adults from English Speaking vs. Non English Speaking Countries
The purpose of this investigation was to examine the claim that when Arabic numerals appear on a
questioned document, such as a check or passport application, it may be possible to determine if the document
was written by a foreign author. In line with prediction, the evidence revealed reliable differences among
certain numerical allographs produced by adults in Belarus, Canada, Germany, Italy, and Spain. Despite these
findings, however, the evidence further revealed the need for caution when using copybook information to make
this determination

WOKÓŁ KANONIZACJI ŚWIĘTEGO ROCHA
The difficulties concerning St Rocco’s canonisation commenced in the Middle Ages, largely due to the missing papal bull. Taking into account the popular piety and the need for establishing the rules of the canonisation process, a number of popes were searching for an optimal solution to this problem. This paper presents selected Holy See documents signed by a dozen of pontiffs spanning from the 10th till the 16th century which detail the canonisation procedure. Another set of sources regarding St Rocco’s case are his oldest hagiographies: Vita sancti Rochi by Francesco Diedo, Acta Breviora by an anonymous German author and La vie et légénde de Monseigneur saint Roch by Jehan Phelipot. They help to answer the question whether St Rocco was declared saint at the Council of Constance (1414–1418) or not. Finally, the liturgical sources as well as certain works of art point at the widespread cult of St Rocco as a protector against the Black Death. In conclusion, the author of this article offers a possible path to find the lost canonisation bull that might put an end to the questions arising around the saint.
