    Revisiting concrete frost salt scaling: On the role of the frozen salt solution micro-structure

    We simulate the glue-spall stress due to mechanical interactions between a frozen saline solution (brine-ice composite) and a non-air entrained concrete surface including the impact of the micro-structure of the frozen solution. The presence of brine channels at the ice/concrete interface was found to be a prerequisite to induce stress during freezing and hence for scaling to occur. Pure ice does not result in scaling as it does not have brine channels. Furthermore, the size of the brine channels and their distribution was found determinant for the magnitude of the glue-spall stress in the concrete and the experimentally observed pessimum effect of a medium salt concentration was explained based on the change of the microstructure of the brine-ice composite at different salt concentrations and temperatures.     Topography studies of concrete abraded with ice

    Topography studies of concrete-ice abrasion were made to proceed in our understanding of the mechanisms of concrete wear by ice on Arctic offshore structures. The effects on various initial surfaces of a B75 normal-weight concrete (smooth, rough, sawn) and on the sawn surface of a LB60 lightweight concrete were studied during concrete-ice abrasion experiments. The degradation of a concrete surface appears mainly as valley formation resulting from air voids opening, or aggregate protrusion and cutting of peaks. The various initial roughness conditions were found to lead to an evolution with both increasing (at both meso- and microscale) and converging roughness. Protrusions from both lightweight and normal-weight aggregates were observed on sawn surfaces.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    An evaluation of the ice melting during concrete-ice abrasion experiment

    The process of ice melting during abrasive interactions with concrete is essential in a variety of contact phenomena. In this paper, we refer to abrasive tests for different samples of concrete with roughness in the range of 9–35 μm. The experimental conditions were: 1 MPa ice pressure, ambient temperature −10 °C, average sliding velocity 0–0.16 m/s. Using the experimental logs, we balance the heat transfer in the ice-concrete contact zone to compute the amount of molten ice. The average melting of ice varies from 3 to 29% of total ice consumption. The highest melting rate of ice corresponded to the lowest ice consumption and lower average abrasion of concrete. The theoretical calculations are validated against benchmarked commercial software with an in-house melting model.Concrete Structure

Arguing that fiction is not just a feature of particular works, such as novels, but an adaptable instrument used to achieve an author’s specific rhetorical goals, the contributors theorize how to reconceive of core literary concepts and influences such as author, narrator, plot, character, consciousness, metaphor, metafiction/metalepsis, intertextuality, paratext, ethics, and social justice. Combining analyses of a wide range of texts by Colson Whitehead, Charles Dickens, Kazuo Ishiguro, Toni Morrison, Geoffrey Chaucer, and others with historical events such as the Nat Tate biography hoax and the Anders Breivik murders, contributors discuss not only a rhetorical definition of fictionality but also the wider consequences of such a conception.     Concrete-ice abrasion: Wear, coefficient of friction and ice consumption

    Concrete structures in the Arctic offshore are often exposed to drifting ice causing abrasion of concrete surfaces. This paper presents the results of a laboratory study of concrete-ice abrasion. The sawn concrete surfaces (two high-performance concrete mixes and one light weight mix of concrete) were exposed to sliding fresh-water ice under 1 MPa pressure for 3 km of sliding distance. The effect of concrete compressive strength, ice consumption, and the coefficient of friction on abrasion was studied simultaneously. The results show a low abrasion of concrete, the maximum abrasion depth (0.35 mm) after 3 km of sliding test was found for the concrete samples with the lowest compressive strength. All tests showed a severe-to-mild wear transition, with the maximum wear rate in the first sliding kilometre. The coefficient of friction was high when ice consumption was high due to ice spallation and pulverization, whereas the coefficient of friction was not directly correlated to the wear. The wear or consumption of the ice (abrasive) was in the order of 30,000–100,000 times that of concrete despite of its strength and stiffness 1–10 times lower than that of concrete.Applied Mechanic

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
