Racing Ourselves: Stories from the Frontlines of Suburban Striver Culture

    No full text
In Racing Ourselves: Stories from the Frontlines of Suburban Striver Culture, author Emily Gaines Buchler delves into the hypercompetitive achievement culture in which she lives, works, and raises a family, Towson, Maryland, a suburb on the outskirts of Baltimore and Washington, D.C. Her compilation of essays question the world in which she lives, contemplating the sanity of the very cultural trends she embraces: year-round, travel sports for her kids; workaholism and extreme racing (think: IronMan competitions) among parents; and kid birthday parties with kegs of craft beer. In each story, she considers the costs of going all in with her peers and questions where the drive and pressure to live this way come from. She holds a microscope not only to her peers but also to herself as she attempts to cut down on her obsessive Googling of health problems and competing over “busyness” among friends. At times funny and satirical and other times edgy and judgmental, Racing Ourselves ultimately investigates how to live and find meaning in today’s complicated, contradictory educated class culture

Meline Toumani’s There Was and There Was Not was published in 2014 and was acknowledged as one of the remarkable books of the year. In this book, Armenian American author Meline Toumani, who grew up in the US, reflects on Turkish and Armenian approaches to the events of 1915. She also questions the attitudes of the Armenian diaspora in five chapters. Toumani emphasizes that what motivated her to write this book was to obtain rational reasons that would enable her to accuse Turkey for the 1915 events (since she considers the 1915 events to be a genocide) and also surpass the perspective of the Armenian diaspora

Mixing in thermally stratified nonlinear spin-up with uniform boundary fluxes

    No full text
abstract: Studies of stratified spin-up experiments in enclosed cylinders have reported the presence of small pockets of well-mixed fluids but quantitative measurements of the mixedness of the fluid has been lacking. Previous numerical simulations have not addressed these measurements. Here we present numerical simulations that explain how the combined effect of spin-up and thermal boundary conditions enhances or hinders mixing of a fluid in a cylinder. The energy of the system is characterized by splitting the potential energy into diabatic and adiabatic components, and measurements of efficiency of mixing are based on both, the ratio of dissipation of available potential energy to forcing and variance of temperature. The numerical simulations of the Navier–Stokes equations for the problem with different sets of thermal boundary conditions at the horizontal walls helped shed some light on the physical mechanisms of mixing, for which a clear explanation was absent.Copyright 2014 American Institute of Physics. Examining the Use of Video Analysis on Teacher Instruction and Teacher Outcomes: A Meta-Analysis

    No full text
The purpose of this replicated systematic review (SR) and meta-analysis was to examine the literature base of single-case research design studies using video analysis to determine the intervention’s effectiveness on teacher outcomes. Using a primary search and an ancestral, citation, and first author searches, this study evaluated participant, student, and setting characteristics in dissertations and peer-reviewed articles published from 2010-2020. A total of 24 included articles were coded for descriptive analysis and design quality. For the meta-analysis, a total of 16 articles were reviewed for statistical analysis, in which a between-case standardized mean difference was used to calculate effect sizes. Results indicate praise (n = 6) and fidelity of implementation (n = 6) had the largest effect size that continue to define video analysis as a promising practice. Recommendations for future practice include continued studies using video analysis with diverse educators, students, and settings that meet design quality standards as well as increasing sample size to prove the generalizability of video analysis. Addressing these recommendations will support video analysis becoming an evidence-based practice (EBP) for educator development

The aim of this article is to show how the author of the Discourse on the Pure Good, or Liber de causis (LdC) according to the Latin philosophers, develops a metaphysics of causality by proposing an investigation into the causes in a domain other than the natural philosophy. Following the most recent studies which understand the content of the LdC as an original one, I present and explain the criteria that support the causal distinction (First Cause, intellect, and soul) and the ultimate primacy of the First Cause: universality, autonomy, priority and eternity. Then, I indicate how two types of causality arise from the distinction between the First Cause and the intellect, namely, creation (cause of being) and information (cause of form).

Milkshake: Abundance and Loss in America's Dairyland

    No full text
MFA thesis, Wedde, Goucher College, December 2023The MFA thesis documents and examines the impact of Wisconsin losing half its dairy farms from 2005 through 2020. Dairy farming is a cultural tradition and touchstone in Wisconsin with the state producing 14 percent of the milk in the United States in 2020, second to California. The author traveled the state personally interviewing with farmers and other professionals. In addition she included data analyzing the dairy industry from print, electronic, and video reports and archives. Concepts explored include farmer suicide, immigrant farm labor, responsibility to ancestors, use of technology in historical perspective, and the environmental impact and regulatory challenge of the Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation. The resulting thesis elucidates the culture of hard work and family-based abundance that forms an emotional heart of America between the coasts. Part of the rural culture is disdain for people they believe are not for hard work, don’t do hard work, and do not even define it correctly. Manure is a renewable energy source making the dairy industry a potential problem-solver on the world’s climate—if regulation and enforcement prove to be able to keep up with the pace of technological discovery. Current federal and state agencies that regulate food are less nimble in funding, staffing, and operation than the enlarged private companies they have to monitor

The individuation of incorporeal beings in the Liber de Causis

This article is about the individuation of incorporeal beings in the Kalām fī maḥḍ al-ẖayr or Liber de Causis (LdC). Bearing that in mind, I will introduce the hierarchy of beings, especially the distinction between the intellect and the soul. After a brief parallel between the types of principles in the LdC (first cause, intellect and soul) and in Proclus’ Elements of Theology (One, limit-unlimited, henádes, intellect and soul), I will discuss the absence of the divine henádes in the LdC and some difficulties faced by the anonymous author due to his changes in the Proclian metaphysical model. Riggs (2017) understands that the anonymous author of the LdC developed a new theory to explain the individuation of beings based on two kinds of activities: the act of creating performed by the first cause and the act of informing performed by the first created intellect. However, these two activities are not able to justify some aspects of individuation since each one of them is a unique act performed by an external principle, i.e., the first cause and the first intellect, not by an immanent one. An alternative interpretation of the theory of individuation found in the LdC will be proposed based on two criteria: the principle of similarity (LdC X) and the principle of proportionality (LdC IX, XI).Este artigo trata da individuação dos seres incorpóreos no Kalām fī maḥḍ al-ẖayr ou Liber de Causis (LdC). As transformações de Avicena do De anima de Aristóteles: sobre a alma racional

    No full text
The following pages are about Avicennas transformations of Aristotles De anima. This research was moved by the necessity of demonstrating the relation between Avicenna, an author belonging de Medieval Arabic tradition, and his most important source, i.e, Aristotle. One of the attitudes about the Arabic Philosophy from the 20th century considered it as philosophically insignificant for being an intermediary between Greek and Medieval Latin Philosophy. So, is there any kind of originality concerning the Arabic thought? Some scholars as Gutas, Druart, Taylor, Hasse, Kaukua, Adamson and Kukkonen have already worked on this question and have demonstrated the originality of the Arabic thinkers, especially Avicenna, if compared to the Greek thinkers. However, a lot of scholars still reduce some concepts and arguments used by Avicenna in his works to the content of his sources. There are two examples that illustrate this approach: the treatment of souls substantiality through the investigation of its definition (De anima II.1) and the investigation of the agent intellects ontological status (De anima III.5). In both situations Avicennas interpretation is reduced to the interpretations of other thinkers. In the first situation, Avicenna critics the souls definition as form of a natural body in favor of the soul as the perfection of a natural body. So, Avicenna understands the term perfection as its best definition. Some contemporary scholars associate Avicennas understanding to the argumentation found in Aristotles Theology. As I am going to defend, this attitude neglects Avicennas critics of both definitions of th human soul, since they are not able to demonstrate the souls substantiality.According to the second situation, the ontological status of the agent intellect in Avicennas theory is reduced to the interpretations of it from Themistius and Alexander of Aphrodisias works. For the three thinkers assume that Aristotles productive intellect in III.5, 430a10-25 is a separated substance, some scholars understood that the Arabictradition has adopted the transcendental status of the agent intellect without questioning. In view of that, the purpose of this investigation is to demonstrate the originality of Avicennas thought, if compared to his sources, from the analyze of his transformations of the mentioned passages.

Deep Content Understanding Toward Entity and Aspect Target Sentiment Analysis on Foundation Models

Introducing Entity-Aspect Sentiment Triplet Extraction (EASTE), a novel Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis (ABSA) task which extends Target-Aspect-Sentiment Detection (TASD) by separating aspect categories (e.g., food#quality) into pre-defined entities (e.g., meal, drink) and aspects (e.g., taste, freshness) which add a fine-gainer level of complexity, yet help exposing true sentiment of chained aspect to its entity. We explore the task of EASTE solving capabilities of language models based on transformers architecture from our proposed unified-loss approach via token classification task using BERT architecture to text generative models such as Flan-T5, Flan-Ul2 to Llama2, Llama3 and Mixtral employing different alignment techniques such as zero/few-shot learning, Parameter Efficient Fine Tuning (PEFT) such as Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA). The model performances are evaluated on the SamEval-2016 benchmark dataset representing the fair comparison to existing works. Our research not only aims to achieve high performance on the EASTE task but also investigates the impact of model size, type, and adaptation techniques on task performance. Ultimately, we provide detailed insights and achieving state-of-the-art results in complex sentiment analysis.Proceedings of the 41 st International Conference on Machine Learning, Vienna, Austria.
