Blood lead levels increase, but remain in normal range with severe weight reduction.
No full textHigh bone turnover states are known to raise blood lead levels (BPb). Caloric restriction will increase bone turnover, yet it remains unknown if weight reduction increases BPb due to mobilization of skeletal stores. We measured whole blood Pb levels (²⁰⁶Pb) by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry in 73 women (age 24–75 years; BMI 23– 61 kg/m²) before and after 6 months of severe weight loss (S-WL), moderate weight loss (M-WL), or weight maintenance (WM). Baseline BPb levels were relatively low at 0.2–6.0 μg/dl, and directly associated with age (r=0.49, P<0.0001). After severe WL (-37.4±9.3 kg, n=17), BPb increased by 2.1±3.9 μg/dl (P<0.05), resulting in BPb levels of 1.3–12.5 μg/dl. M-WL (-5.6±2.7 kg, n=39) and WM (0.3±1.3 kg, n=17) did not result in an increase in BPb levels (0.5±3.2 and 0.0±0.7 μg/dl, M-WL and WM, respectively). BPb levels increased more with greater WL (r=0.24, P<0.05). Bone turnover markers increased only with severe WL and were directly correlated with WL. At baseline, higher calcium intake was associated with lower BPb (r=-0.273, P<0.02), however, this association was no longer present after 6 months. Käytettävyystutkimus Sue-lehden internetsivustosta Jacob Nielsenin heuristisen evaluoinnin kautta
No full textTutkimukseni tarkoituksena oli löytää ja tutkia ilmaisjakelulehti Suen internetsivujen mahdolliset käytettävyysongelmat. Otin tutkimukseni lähtökohdaksi Jacob Nielsenin kehittämän heuristiikkalistan, joka on yksi maailman käytetyimpiä heuristiikkaohjeistuksia internetsivujen kehitysprosesseissa.
Tutkimukseni hypoteesi oli, että kaikista internetsivustoista löytyy käytettävyysongelmia sivuston kehitysvaiheessa.
Tutkimusmateriaali koostui asiantuntijatestausryhmän suorittaman testauksen tuloksista. Testaus sisälsi Nielsenin heuristiikkalistan avulla kehittämieni testaustehtävien suorittamisen ja sivuston itsenäisen observoinnin heuristiikkalistaa apuna käyttäen. Testauksessa ilmenneet käytettävyysongelmat testaajat raportoivat minulle kirjallisesti. Testaajat vastasivat haastatteluuni ja raportoivat muita havannoimiaan epäkohtia. Tutkimustulos osoitti sen, että Suen internetsivuilta löytyi käytettävyysongelmia. Vakavia käytettävyysongelmia tuli ilmi pääasiassa ohjelmointivirheissä ja jatkuvuuden rikkoutumisessa. Sivuston ulkoasu sai myös testaajilta osittain negatiivista palautetta. Visuaalisuuden arvioinnin tulokset vaihtelivat kumminkin eniten kaikista testausalueista testaajien välillä. Testaustuloksissa myös ilmeni osittainen tarve poiketa Nielsenin heuristiikkalistasta, jotta sivusto palvelisi paremmin kohderyhmäänsä. Johtopäätös tutkimuksessa oli, että hypoteesi piti paikkansa. Kaikista internetsivustoista löytyy käytettävyysongelmia sivuston kehittämisvaiheessa. Kohderyhmän erityistarpeiden huomioiminen aiheuttaa kehitysvaiheessa myös tilanteita, joissa pitää pohtia kumman painoarvo on tärkeämpi, käytettävyyslistan tarkka noudattaminen vai kohderyhmän tarpeiden palveleminen.The objective of this study was to find and observe possible problems in heuristic methods in music magazine Sues website. I used the heuristics methods created by Jacob Nielsen as basis to my study. Nielsens methods are the most commonly used methods as creating websites. The hypothesis was that it's possible to find heuristics problems in every website while creating them. The study substance consisted of the material collected by professional testers. The groub of professional testers tested the Sue website by following the testing tasks created by me and observing the site self-reliant by using Nielsens methods as a guideline. The heuristics problems the testing groub discovered were reported to me in writing.
The result of the study showed that heuristic problems could be found in Sue website. Serious heuristic problems could be found mainly in coding and lagging of continuity. The visual appearance of the site also was partly criticized by the testing groub. The results of testing visuality were the only results that variated much between the testers. The testing results also showed that sometimes it is better not to follow blindly created heuristic methods. The target groub
should be considered and then make a decision, which is more important, the needs of the target groub or the good heuristics.
Conclusion of the study is that the hypothesis was correct. It is possible to find heuristics problems in every website
while creating

Buy, Lobby or Sue: Interest Groups' Participation in Policy Making - A Selective Survey
No full textThe participation of interest groups in public policy making is unavoidable. Its unavoidable nature is only matched by the universal suspicion with which it has been seen by both policy makers and the public. Recently, however, there has been a growing literature that examines the participation of interest groups in public policy making from a New Institutional Economics perspective. The distinguishing feature of the New Institutional Economics Approach is its emphasis in opening up the black box of decision-making, whether in understanding the rules of the game, or the play of the game. In this paper we do not attempt to fairly describe the vast literature on interest group's behavior. Instead, the purpose of this essay for the New Institutional Economics Guide Book is to review recent papers that follow the NIE mantra. That is, they attempt to explicate the micro-analytic features of the way interest groups actually interact with policy-makers, rather than providing an abstract high-level representation. We emphasize the role of the institutional environment in understanding interest groups' strategies.
